Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships dock at the Fremantle Passenger Terminal on Victoria Quay (or the nearby D Berth), about 15 minutes' walk from the town centre and 10 minutes from Fremantle train station. Trains to Perth take 30–40 minutes and cost A$3.50 by contactless card, and Sunday travel is free when you tap on and off (2026). Leave Perth at least 2.5 hours before all-aboard, or the Fremantle town centre 75 minutes before.

Fremantle is Perth's port and a town in its own right: a compact town of heritage streets, a historic prison with guided tours, a weekend market and a working fishing harbour, all within walking distance of the ship. Perth is a straightforward train ride away if you want the city and Kings Park. For most calls, Fremantle alone fills the day comfortably. If you are embarking or disembarking here, the station is close, but the walk with luggage takes about 20 minutes and the old footbridge from the station is closed.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Fremantle Passenger Terminal, Victoria Quay

Fremantle Ports' main cruise berth, which it calls Australia's largest cruise terminal. About 15 minutes' walk to the town centre and 10 minutes to Fremantle Bus and Train Station. Taxis wait at a rank outside. On turnaround days a free shuttle runs between the terminal and Fremantle station about every 20 minutes, from an hour after the ship berths until 16:00. Some transit ships get a free shuttle to the town centre, depending on passenger numbers; ask on board.

  • D Berth, Victoria Quay

Fremantle Ports' other cruise berth on Victoria Quay. Check your daily programme for which berth you are using.

Can you walk? Yes, about 15 min. Leave the terminal, turn right onto Peter Hughes Drive, follow the footpath beside the railway, and cross at the pedestrian crossing past the station into town. The station is about 10 minutes away; allow about 20 minutes with luggage. The pedestrian bridge from the station to the terminal is no longer open.

Getting to town

A Go Anywhere fare gives unlimited travel for three hours; a DayRider is A$7. Concession fares are not available on contactless.

When to head back

Leave Perth by train at least 2.5 hours before all-aboard (by 15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard). Leave Fremantle town centre at least 75 minutes before all-aboard.

The train takes 30–40 minutes, then you have a 10–15 minute walk from Fremantle station to the terminal. Weekend trains run only every 30 minutes, so one missed train costs you half an hour. Aim to be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if you went to Perth.

If you are running late: If trains are disrupted, take a taxi or rideshare straight to the Fremantle Passenger Terminal on Victoria Quay. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your ship's daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Leaving Perth too late on a weekend, when trains run only every 30 minutes.

Fremantle is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Skip the ship tour for Fremantle itself: the prison, museums, markets and harbour are all walkable from the terminal and easy to book or enter on your own. Perth is also easy by train. A ship tour earns its price for places outside the rail network, such as the Swan Valley or longer nature trips, where the return depends on road traffic and a single driver. Rottnest Island is the borderline case: ferries leave from B Shed nearby, but on a short call the island leaves little margin, and B Shed is being renovated, so check services carefully or take the ship's tour.

Common mistakes

  • Planning to use the footbridge from Fremantle station to the terminal.

It is closed. Walk along Peter Hughes Drive beside the railway, or use the turnaround-day shuttle from the station.

  • Expecting Fremantle Markets to be open on a weekday call.

The markets open Friday to Sunday and Monday public holidays only.

  • Catching a late train back from Perth at the weekend.

Weekend trains run every 30 minutes. Leave Perth at least 2.5 hours before all-aboard.

  • Booking the Tunnels Tour on a short call.

It lasts 2.5 hours. Choose a standard prison tour unless you have a long day.

  • Buying a ticket for the train when you could tap.

Contactless bank cards and phones work on Transperth and are capped at A$3.50 a trip; travel is free on Sundays if you tap on and off.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Fremantle is a safe, compact town for visitors. The main hazard is the Western Australian sun: carry water, sunscreen and a hat, especially on the unshaded quay. Swim only at beaches and in conditions you are sure of, and follow any flags. Take normal care with bags in the busy markets and around the station. Emergency number: 000.
Accessibility
The route from the terminal to town is flat, and the turnaround-day shuttle links the terminal with the station. The old station footbridge is closed. At Fremantle Prison the gatehouse is accessible and mobility strollers can be borrowed free, but the Convict Prison Tour has no lift to the upper levels and the Tunnels Tour is not suitable for mobility-device users; the Torchlight Tour is open to them. A Changing Places facility is at the Walyalup Civic Centre, opened with an MLAK key from prison or civic centre staff. City of Fremantle car parks are free for ACROD permit holders, usually for twice the signed time.
If it rains
Fremantle copes well with rain: start with a prison tour, then spend the rest of the day between the WA Shipwrecks Museum (free) and the WA Maritime Museum, both close to the ship. Fremantle Markets is under cover if it is Friday to Sunday.
Crowds
Weekends are busiest in town because of the markets. On a weekday call the prison and museums are quieter; book the first prison tour. If you plan to go to Perth, go early and come back first, then spend the afternoon in Fremantle close to the ship.
