Quick answer: Ships dock alongside at the Port of Lautoka, Fiji's main bulk-cargo port, so there is no tender. Vitogo Parade, the main street, is about 1.5 km and 15–20 minutes' walk from the port gate, and taxis wait outside the gate; agree the fare first and use only yellow-plate taxis. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from town and 90 minutes from Sabeto, Nadi or the beaches.
Lautoka is Fiji's 'Sugar City', a working town on the west coast of Viti Levu about 24 km north of Nadi, built around a sugar mill that has run since 1903. The cruise berth is in a busy cargo port that handles sugar, molasses and woodchips, so the walk out is industrial rather than scenic. The town itself is compact: a large municipal market, an Indo-Fijian shopping street, a Hare Krishna temple and a small botanical garden. Most passengers either spend the morning in town or take a taxi or tour south to the Sabeto hot springs and mud pool, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant or Nadi.

Lautoka wharf (Port of Lautoka) · 1.5 km to the centre
Cargo port run by Fiji Ports, also the base for Blue Lagoon Cruises. No dedicated cruise terminal building has been described. Taxis wait outside the port gate. Some lines run a shuttle into town; check your daily programme. Stay within permitted areas inside the port.
Can you walk? Yes, about 20 min. About 15–20 minutes on foot from the port gate to Vitogo Parade, the main street, along roads used by port traffic. The market, shops and the temple are in the centre. It is hot and there is little shade; take water. Sabeto, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant, Nadi and the beaches need a taxi or tour.
Getting to town
On foot
Free15–20 min to Vitogo Parade
Leave by the port gate and follow the road into the centre. Watch for trucks around the port.
Taxi
Fares not published; agree before you goShort ride into town; 30–40 min to Nadi
Taxis wait outside the port gate. Use only licensed taxis with yellow number plates, and agree the fare before setting off, because some do not use meters. Many drivers offer fixed-price private tours; agree the route, price, waiting time and return time first. Uber does not operate in Fiji.
Local bus and minivan
Government-set stage fares; check before travelVaries
Buses leave from the central bus station by the market and need an e-ticket card, sold at bus stations, Vodafone outlets or on board. Use only yellow-plate minivans. Buses are crowded and do not keep strict schedules, so they are a poor choice for getting back to the ship.
Organised tour
Varies by line or operator3.5 hours (mud pool) to a full day
Common cruise tours combine the Sabeto mud pool and hot springs, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and a village visit.
When to head back
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from Lautoka town, and leave Sabeto, Nadi or the beaches at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Nadi is 30–40 minutes away by road and traffic on the Queens Road can be slow. Agree a firm return time with any taxi driver you hire for the day, and do not rely on public buses for the return.
If you are running late: Take a yellow-plate taxi straight to the port gate. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.
Where people go wrong: Hiring a taxi for Sabeto or Nadi without agreeing the fare and a firm return time.
Lautoka is one day. Time the whole cruise.

On your own or a ship excursion?
Do the town on foot; it is close and simple. For Sabeto, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant or a village visit, a ship tour or a reputable private driver both work; a private driver is often cheaper for a small group, but agree the price, stops and return time in advance. Take the ship's tour for island day trips from Denarau or hikes in Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, where boat times or mountain roads make an independent return risky.

Common mistakes
Planning the market on a Sunday.
The main market and handicraft section are closed on Sundays; only the fish market (mornings) and the food market open.
Getting into a taxi without agreeing the fare.
Agree the fare, or the full price of a day tour including waiting and return time, before you set off. Use yellow-plate taxis only.
Trying to fit Nadi, Sabeto and an island trip into one call.
Pick one. Nadi alone is 30–40 minutes each way.
Using public buses for the return to the ship.
Buses are crowded, need an e-ticket card and do not keep strict schedules. Use a taxi for the return.
Wearing good swimwear to the mud pool.
The mud stains. Wear old swimwear and bring a towel.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Lautoka is generally calm for daytime visitors, and Canada rated Fiji 'normal security precautions' in October 2026. Petty theft such as pickpocketing and bag snatching happens, especially in crowded places like the market; keep bags closed and phones off café tables. Card skimming has been reported, so use ATMs inside banks during the day and cover your PIN. Do not walk alone after dark or around quiet port and industrial roads. Use only yellow-plate taxis and minivans. Several foreigners have been poisoned by methanol-contaminated alcohol in Fiji; drink only from sealed bottles at reputable places. Many beaches have no lifeguards and reefs have strong rip currents. Dengue is present, so use insect repellent. Cyclone season runs from November to April. Emergency number: 911 (emergency), 917 (police).
- Scams to know
- Taxi overcharging: some taxis do not use meters, so agree the fare before you get in and use yellow-plate taxis only.
- Informal port tours with unclear terms: agree the price, stops, waiting time and return time before setting off.
- Card skimming at ATMs and card terminals: use bank ATMs in daylight and watch your card when paying.
- Accessibility
- The ship docks alongside, so there is no tender. The walk to town is about 1.5 km on roads used by port traffic, with little shade; a taxi is easier for anyone with limited mobility. The market is a large covered building but crowded. About half of the Garden of the Sleeping Giant is wheelchair accessible. The mud pool and hot springs have uneven, slippery ground.
- If it rains
- Stay in town: the covered market, the temple and the shops on Vitogo Parade are all under cover or a short walk apart. Heavy rain can flood roads and make the mud pool area slippery; avoid long drives and boat trips in heavy weather.
- Crowds
- Lautoka sees relatively few cruise calls, so the town rarely feels crowded by passengers. The market is busiest on Saturday mornings with local shoppers. Sabeto and the Garden of the Sleeping Giant fill when ship tours arrive mid-morning; go in the early afternoon instead.
