Dubrovnik Cruise Port

Quick answerMost ships dock at Gruž, about 3 km north-west of the Old Town; one ship at a time may anchor off the Old Town and tender passengers into the old harbour. From Gruž, Libertas bus 1A or 1B reaches Pile Gate in 15–20 minutes for €2.50 paid on board (2026). Leave the Old Town 1 hour 45 minutes before all-aboard, because summer traffic on the single road back to Gruž is slow.

Fees and limits in Dubrovnik

  • Dubrovnik allows at most two large cruise ships a day, each staying at least eight hours, and caps cruise visitors in the city at 4,000 at any one time; ships with 500 or fewer passengers are exempt from some rules.

2 ships per day; 4,000 cruise visitors at once

    Status and sources

Transport: Port of Dubrovnik (Gruž) to the Old Town

Dubrovnik is a short day done well or a long day done badly. The Old Town is compact and car-free, but it sits 3 km from where most ships berth, and the city walls, Stradun and Pile Gate fill fast once the morning buses and shuttles arrive. The port authority allows no more than two ships berthed at once and about 4,000 cruise visitors at a time, so crowds are lower than a decade ago, but the walls still reach peak density between 10:00 and 13:00. Get to the walls early, eat away from Stradun, and treat the bus back to Gruž as the part of the day most likely to go wrong.

Walkable? Partly · about 40 min (3 km)

You can walk from Gruž to Pile Gate in about 35–45 minutes, mostly along busy roads with traffic and some climbing. It is fine on a cool day if you are fit, but most people take the bus there and save their legs for the walls. Once inside the Old Town everything is on foot; Stradun is flat, but the side streets are steep stairs.

Where your ship docks

  • Gruž cruise berths (Port of Dubrovnik) · 3 km to the centre — Where most ships dock. Libertas city buses stop on the main road outside the port; cruise line shuttles and taxis wait at the terminal.
  • Old Town anchorage (tender landing in the old harbour) · 0 km to the centre — For the one ship allowed to anchor off the Old Town. Tenders land inside the old harbour on the east side of the walls.

Libertas city bus 1A / 1B

€2.50 one ride bought on board; €1.73 one-hour ticket bought in advance (2026)15–20 min to Pile Gate

Lines 1A and 1B run Mokošica–Pile via the Gruž harbour road, roughly every 15–25 minutes in daytime. Buy the cheaper one-hour ticket at Libertas sales points, Tisak kiosks or in the Libertas app; the driver sells only the single-ride ticket. Pile is the terminus, just outside the main Old Town gate. In July and August buses fill up near the port; if the first one is full, wait for the next rather than walking.

Libertas 24-hour ticket

€5.31 (2026)Valid 24 h from first use

Worth it only if you plan three or more rides (for example Gruž–Pile, Pile–Lapad beach, back to Gruž). The Dubrovnik Pass also includes unlimited city buses.

Libertas line 3 / line 8

Same city fares (2026)15–25 min

Line 3 (Nuncijata–Pile) also passes the port area but does not run on Saturdays, Sundays or holidays. Line 8 (Viktorija–Gruž) links Gruž with the Ploče side of town. Check the stop timetable before relying on either.

Taxi / ride-hailing

Agree or check the meter; fares vary (2026)10–15 min, up to 30 min in summer traffic

Taxis wait at the terminal. Uber and Bolt operate in Dubrovnik but cannot drive into the pedestrian Old Town; you are dropped at Pile or Ploče.

Cruise line shuttle

Varies by line; often paid (2026)15–20 min

Many lines run a shuttle from Gruž to a drop-off near Pile or the cable car area. Check where it stops and when the last return leaves; it is the same road and the same traffic as the public bus.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Leave Pile Gate by 15:45 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

The bus ride is 15–20 minutes when the road is clear, but in summer the coast road to Gruž backs up and full buses pass the Pile stop. Allow a missed bus, a slow ride and the walk through the port, and you need about 45 minutes. That leaves you on board about an hour before all-aboard, which is where you want to be.

If you're running late

If you are running late, take a taxi from the rank at Pile rather than waiting for a bus. Call the ship's port agent (number on your daily programme) if you will miss all-aboard; ships do not wait for independent passengers, and the next port will be your problem to reach.

Under the port's '2+1' arrangement, two ships berth at Gruž and one more may anchor offshore near the Old Town. Passengers from the anchored ship are tendered into the Old Town's old harbour (by Ploče side), a ride of a few minutes. If your ship tenders, you skip the bus entirely but should allow for tender queues on the way back.

What to see in Dubrovnik on a cruise day

City Walls

A 2 km circuit above the Old Town with views over the roofs and the sea. The single thing most people come for.

⏱ 1.5–2 hours€40 adult, €15 child 7–18 (2026); includes Fort Lovrijenac

Tip: Start at opening time from Pile or begin at Ploče, which is quieter. There is almost no shade. One circuit, one entry: you cannot leave and re-enter.

Fort Lovrijenac

Clifftop fortress outside Pile Gate with the best view back to the walls.

⏱ 30–45 minutesIncluded with the walls ticket; €15 alone (2026)

Tip: The walls ticket covers it for 72 hours from scanning, so use it before or after the walls.

Stradun and Luža Square

The limestone main street from Pile to the old harbour, with the clock tower, Orlando's Column and Sponza Palace.

⏱ 45 minutesFree

Tip: Walk it before 09:00 or after 16:00 if you want photos without crowds.

Rector's Palace

Gothic-Renaissance seat of the old Republic of Ragusa, now the Cultural History Museum.

⏱ 45 minutesIncluded in the Dubrovnik Pass (€40, 2026)

Tip: Do it at midday when the walls are hottest and busiest.

Mount Srđ cable car

Four-minute ride to 400 m above the Old Town, with the clearest view of the walls and the Elaphiti islands.

⏱ 1–1.5 hours€30 return, €17 one way adult (2026)

Tip: Lower station is just outside Ploče Gate. Service stops in strong wind; check before you queue.

Lokrum island

Wooded nature reserve 15 minutes by boat, with a botanical garden, peacocks and rocky swimming.

⏱ 2.5–3 hours€30 return boat including reserve entry (2026)

Tip: Boats leave from the old harbour roughly every 30 minutes in season. Note the last boat time posted at the dock and keep your ticket for the return.

Franciscan Monastery

Romanesque cloister and one of Europe's oldest working pharmacies, just inside Pile Gate.

⏱ 30 minutesIncluded in the Dubrovnik Pass (2026)

Tip: Right next to the walls entrance, so it fits before or after the circuit.

For the Old Town, walls and cable car you do not need a ship tour: the bus is cheap and everything is signed. A ship excursion makes sense for trips that depend on road timing, such as Ston, Cavtat or the Konavle valley, or if you have limited mobility and want a guaranteed seat on transport both ways. It also protects you if the bus back is overloaded: the ship waits for its own tours.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Dubrovnik

Starting the walls at 11:00 in July.

Instead: Be on the walls by 09:00 or after 15:00. Midday means queues, heat and stop-start walking.

Leaving the bus back to Gruž to the last moment.

Instead: Leave Pile 1 hour 45 minutes before all-aboard; summer buses fill and traffic stalls.

Buying walls tickets from resellers.

Instead: Buy at the official ticket office by Onofrio's Fountain, at the wall entrances or the official webshop. Resellers add a markup.

Paying a separate fee for Lovrijenac.

Instead: Your walls ticket already includes it.

Eating on Stradun.

Instead: Walk one or two streets away; the same dishes cost noticeably less.

Safety: is Dubrovnik safe for cruise passengers?

Dubrovnik is a safe city for visitors. The main risks are heat, dehydration and slips on polished limestone and wall steps, especially in July and August. Carry water on the walls, where there is little shade. Pickpocketing is uncommon but possible in crowds at Pile Gate and on full buses. The Old Town bans wheeled suitcases on its streets and enforces noise limits, which matters only if you are disembarking at the end of a cruise.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Third-party walls tickets sold at a markup: buy at the official office at Pile, at the wall entrances or on the official City Walls webshop.
  • Fish priced per kilo: some restaurants list fresh fish by weight. Ask for the weight and total price before it is cooked.
  • Taxi fares not agreed: check the meter is on or agree the price before you get in, especially at Pile in the afternoon.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

The port authority's 2026 berthing policy caps simultaneous cruise visitors at about 4,000 and allows two ships berthed with one more at anchor. Cruise crowds peak between 09:30 and 13:00 on Stradun and on the walls, and at Pile Gate when shuttles arrive. Start at Ploče rather than Pile, go clockwise from there, and do museums at midday. Lokrum and the cable car are quieter early in the afternoon once tours head back.

Accessibility

Gruž has level access from the ship to the road. Libertas buses can be crowded but Pile is a step-free stop. Inside the Old Town, Stradun and Luža Square are flat and smooth, but most side streets are stepped and Pile Gate has a ramp and some cobbles. The city walls are not wheelchair or pushchair accessible: the route is all steps. The cable car is the easiest way for limited-mobility visitors to see the Old Town from above. If your ship tenders, ask the ship whether wheelchair users can be transferred in that day's sea conditions.

If it rains

Rain turns the walls and Stradun slippery, so swap the walls for the Rector's Palace, the Franciscan Monastery and the Maritime Museum, all covered by the Dubrovnik Pass. The cable car stops in lightning and strong wind, so check before going up.
