Uturoa Cruise Port

Quick answerCruise ships dock at the quay in Uturoa, Raiatea's main town; the terminal, craft stalls and municipal market are steps from the gangway, so no tender or transport is needed for the town. Taputapuātea marae, the UNESCO site, is about 29 km south near Opoa: go by taxi, hire car or the ship's Le Truck tour. Leave Taputapuātea at least two hours before all-aboard and be back at the quay 60 minutes before.

Transport: Uturoa cruise quay (Gare Maritime), Raiatea to Uturoa

Uturoa is a small working town, not a resort, and the cruise quay sits on its waterfront. The Gare Maritime terminal has a visitor information office, shops, restaurants and toilets, the municipal market is across the street, and the main street runs behind it. The reason most passengers come is Taputapuātea, the marae complex on a lagoon peninsula in the south-east that UNESCO inscribed in 2017 as the ceremonial centre of the wider Polynesian world. Getting there means a 29 km drive along the coast and round Faaroa Bay, and public transport is not reliable enough to plan a ship day around. Sunday calls are quieter, with many services closed.

Walkable? Yes · about 5 min

Uturoa itself is on foot: the market is across the street from the terminal and the shops of Rue Centrale are just behind it. Everything beyond town, including Taputapuātea, Faaroa Bay and the motu, needs a vehicle or boat.

  • Gare Maritime, Uturoa waterfront · 0 km to the centre — Cruise terminal on the waterfront with a visitor information office, restaurants, shops and public toilets. Craft stalls (the fare des mamas) stand beside it, the Marché Municipal is across the street, and there is a taxi stand near the terminal. There are no security gates between the quay and the town; you show your cruise card to reboard.

Taxi

Fares not published; agree the price, including waiting time, before you leaveTaputapuātea is about 29 km south

There is a taxi stand near the cruise terminal and several taxis work in town. For Taputapuātea, agree a round trip with waiting time so you are not stranded in Opoa, where you cannot count on finding a cab for the return.

Hire car, scooter or e-bike

Varies by agencyAbout 29 km each way to Taputapuātea

Several rental agencies are based in Uturoa, including Raiatea Rent Car, Moana Rent A Car, Raiatea Location, Renault Rent Raiatea and Olitea Location; scooters, bikes and e-bikes can also be hired. Book ahead for a ship day. Drive is on the right. Roads beyond the coast road can be rough.

Le truck (local bus)

Not publishedNo published timetable

Traditional open-sided 'trucks' run as the local bus, but without a timetable you can rely on. Do not plan a return to the ship around one.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back at the quay 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Taputapuātea at least 120 minutes before all-aboard.

The drive to Taputapuātea is about 29 km on a single coast road with no alternative route, so a breakdown, roadworks or a slow vehicle costs time you cannot make up. If you hired a car, allow time to return it in Uturoa before walking to the quay.

If you're running late

Call the taxi or tour operator you used, and the port agent number in your daily programme, as soon as you think you will be late. There is only one road back, so if you are stuck, tell the ship early.

Ships dock at the Uturoa quay in front of the Gare Maritime. Whether every ship size can berth was not confirmed in the sources checked; if your daily programme says tender, add 30 minutes to every return time in this guide.

A one-day plan for Uturoa (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:30 Ashore. Collect a pre-booked hire car in Uturoa, or agree a round-trip taxi fare with waiting time at the stand by the terminal.

  2. 08:45 Drive south along the east coast and round Faaroa Bay towards Opoa.

  3. 09:45 Taputapuātea marae. Walk the lagoon-side marae and take the path behind the car park up to the viewpoint.

  4. 11:30 Head back to Uturoa, stopping at the Faaroa Bay viewpoints on the way.

  5. 12:30 Return the car. Lunch in town or from the market.

  6. 13:30 Marché Municipal and the fare des mamas craft stalls, then Rue Centrale.

  7. 14:30 Optional: Mount Tapioi, about 1 hour up and 30 minutes down; start down by 15:45 at the latest.

  8. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Uturoa needs no tour. For Taputapuātea, a hire car is the most flexible choice if you are confident driving on the right and can collect it near the quay, and a taxi with an agreed waiting time also works. The ship's Le Truck tour is worth it if you cannot drive, want a guide's explanation of the marae, or are on a short call; the trade-off is a hot, noisy open bus. Boat trips to the Faaroa River, the motu or Taha'a are best booked through the ship or a reputable operator at the quay, because independent ferry times to Taha'a do not reliably fit a ship day.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Uturoa

Expecting Taputapuātea to be near the port.

Instead: It is about 29 km south near Opoa. Arrange a car, a round-trip taxi or the ship's tour.

Taking a one-way taxi to the marae.

Instead: Agree a round trip with waiting time before you leave Uturoa.

Planning to reach Taha'a independently on a short call.

Instead: Passenger boat times may not fit a ship day; use a tour that guarantees the return to Uturoa.

Arriving on a Sunday expecting shops and services.

Instead: Many services close or keep short hours on Sundays. Book cars and tours in advance.

Climbing on marae stones for photos.

Instead: Taputapuātea is a sacred site; stay on paths and off the platforms.

Safety: is Uturoa safe for cruise passengers?

Uturoa is a small, calm town. The main risks are sun, heat and dehydration, especially on Mount Tapioi and at the marae, where there is little shade. On the road, drive on the right, watch for pedestrians, dogs and scooters, and remember the coast road is the only route back. In the lagoon, wear reef shoes against coral and only swim where your boat operator says it is safe. Emergency numbers are 17 for police, 15 for medical emergencies and 18 for fire.

Practical information

Crowds

Uturoa is a small town, so a cruise call fills the waterfront, craft stalls and market around the quay. Go off the ship early if you want the marae with fewer people, and book a hire car or taxi before the call rather than on the day.

Accessibility

The quay, the Gare Maritime, the craft stalls and the market are close together on the flat waterfront. Taputapuātea has uneven ground and the viewpoint path climbs a hillside. The ships' Le Truck tours are not suitable for wheelchair users or guests with limited mobility, so a private taxi or adapted vehicle booked in advance is the only realistic option. Mount Tapioi is a steep gravel track.

If it rains

Heavy rain makes the Mount Tapioi track slippery and the marae ground muddy, and lagoon trips may be cancelled. Spend time in the Gare Maritime and the covered market, and if the rain eases drive to Taputapuātea, which is open-air and can be visited in light showers.
