Ashore from 09:15, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships dock at Napier Port, a working port you cannot walk out of, so everyone takes the cruise shuttle, about 5 to 10 minutes to the Visitor Centre at 100 Marine Parade. Central Napier is flat and walkable from there. Join the shuttle queue 90 minutes before all-aboard, because return lines grow late in the day.

Napier is the Art Deco town rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake, and its centre is compact, flat and easy to do alone. The catch is getting out of the port: it is a working cargo port and passengers cannot walk through it, so your whole day hangs on the shuttle. The other thing to get right is the sea. Marine Parade looks like a swimming beach, but it is not one. Do the Trust's 10:00 walk, see the free museum, and leave a proper margin for the shuttle home.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Napier Port cruise berths · 2.3 km to the centre

A working port with no independent pedestrian access. Ships use the numbered wharves, including Te Whiti (6 Wharf). Cruise Ambassadors greet passengers and shuttles wait at the ship.

Can you walk? No. You cannot walk off the port. Take the shuttle to Marine Parade. Once there the centre is flat, and the shops, museum and Art Deco streets are all on foot.

Getting to town

Cruise shuttle

Free according to Celebrity Cruises; confirm with your ship (2026)About 5 min

Waits at the ship and drops at the Napier isite Visitor Centre, 100 Marine Parade, next to the Soundshell. Lines get long close to all-aboard time.

On foot in town

FreeAbout 10 min from the Visitor Centre to Clive Square

Marine Parade and the Art Deco streets are flat. The Trust's tours start at the Art Deco Centre on Memorial Square, 5 Clive Square East, so leave the Marine Parade stop at least 15 minutes before a tour.

Taxi

Metered; ask for an estimate firstAbout 5 min from the CBD to Ahuriri

The Visitor Centre lists Hawke's Bay Combined Taxis and Proline Cabs. Taxis wait near the shuttle area for trips to wineries and Bluff Hill.

Hire bike

Listed by the Visitor Centre. Return it in time to join the shuttle queue.

When to head back

Join the shuttle queue on Marine Parade 90 minutes before all-aboard. For a 17:30 all-aboard that means by 16:00, to be on board by 16:30.

Leave Clive Square or Ahuriri 100 minutes before all-aboard, the National Aquarium 105 minutes before, and Bluff Hill or Taradale wineries 120 minutes before. Those figures all aim to put you in the shuttle queue on time.

If you are running late: If the shuttle line looks too long, tell an ambassador or shuttle driver straight away. Passengers cannot walk through the port. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme, and the Visitor Centre on +64 6 834 1911 can help during its 09:00–17:00 hours.

Where people go wrong: Assuming you can walk out of a working port, then reaching the shuttle stop too late for the return line.

Napier is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Skip the ship's tour for the Art Deco centre: the Trust's walk is the same subject, led locally, and it leaves from town. A ship's tour earns its price for Cape Kidnappers and the gannet colony, or for a Hawke's Bay winery day, because those depend on road transport and the ship will wait for its own tours. The Visitor Centre also lists approved local operators and can book them free of charge.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming you can stroll out of the port.

It is a working port. Take the shuttle both ways, and plan the day around it.

  • Swimming off Marine Parade.

It has a steep drop-off and a strong undertow. Use Westshore or Port Sandy Beach, inside the buoys.

  • Booking the 14:00 Art Deco walk on a 17:30 all-aboard.

In summer it runs 2.5 hours and leaves no margin. Take the 10:00 walk.

  • Going to the Marine Parade stop for a 10:00 tour start.

Tours start at the Art Deco Centre on Memorial Square, 5 Clive Square East, about 10 minutes' walk away.

  • Reaching the shuttle stop at the last minute.

Join the queue 90 minutes before all-aboard. Lines grow late in the day.

  • Taking fruit or a sandwich off the ship.

New Zealand's food rules apply at each port. Leave fresh food on board, or face an instant fine of at least NZ$400.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Napier is a low-risk town for visitors, and Australia's Smartraveller advises normal precautions for New Zealand. The main hazards are the sea off Marine Parade, which is not safe for swimming, and earthquakes: New Zealand feels 150–200 a year. If you feel a long or strong one near the coast, go to high ground straight away, as a tsunami may follow. Bluff Hill is the obvious high ground. Dial 111 in an emergency and 105 for non-urgent police matters. Emergency number: 111.
Scams to know
  • Copycat NZeTA and declaration sites: third-party sites charge for the NZ Traveller Declaration, which is free. Use only the official NZTD app or website, and the Immigration NZ site or app for the NZeTA.
Accessibility
Central Napier and Marine Parade are flat and easy for wheelchairs and walkers, though the Art Deco walk has some steps. Ask your ship whether the cruise shuttle has a lift or ramp before you go ashore, as this was not confirmed. Bluff Hill is steep on foot, but drivers can use Lighthouse Road to the lookout. MTG Hawke's Bay and the Aquarium are the simplest indoor options.
If it rains
MTG Hawke's Bay is free and takes an hour or more. Add the National Aquarium at the far end of Marine Parade, and the film at the start of the Art Deco walk. Avoid Bluff Hill's steps in the wet.
Crowds
Napier gets a lot of big-ship calls in summer; January 2027 has 10 calls, with two ships on 21 January. The port takes ships up to Ovation of the Seas size, close to 5,000 passengers, so the shuttle and the Art Deco tours fill on those days. Pre-book tours through the Visitor Centre, and leave the shuttle early rather than late.
