Quick answer: One ship docks at the Gare Maritime on Quai Ferry, a few minutes' walk from Place des Cocotiers; a second ship uses the container terminal with a free shuttle, and any third ship tenders. For the beaches at Anse Vata and Baie des Citrons take Tanéo line 3 (XPF 500 single, 2026), the hop-on hop-off bus (XPF 1,200, 2026) or a taxi. Be back at the gangway 60 minutes before all-aboard from the centre, 90 minutes from the bays or the Tjibaou Cultural Centre.

Nouméa is the capital of New Caledonia, a French territory, so you pay in CFP francs (XPF) and most signs and menus are in French. The cruise terminal sits on the downtown waterfront, so the centre, the Port Moselle market and the shopping streets are all within walking distance. The beaches are in the southern bays, Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata, and need a bus, the hop-on bus or a taxi. The territory went through serious unrest in 2024 and cruise calls stopped for about six months; ships returned in November 2024, the curfew was lifted on 2 December 2024, and the city centre and bays are operating normally for visitors, though governments still advise caution.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Cruise Ship Terminal (Gare Maritime, Quai Ferry)

Downtown, a few minutes' walk from Place des Cocotiers. Information desk on the ground floor, free Wi-Fi, an AUD exchange desk (photo ID needed), public toilets and a crafts market on the upper floor. Les Quais shopping centre is next door, and the Sud Tourisme information point is in it, about 200 m away. There is no taxi rank at the terminal: phone for one or use the rank at Place des Cocotiers.

  • Container terminal (second ship)

Used when a second ship is in port. Do not walk out; use the free shuttle to the cruise terminal.

Can you walk? Partly, about 10 min. Place des Cocotiers, the City Museum, the cathedral, Rue de l'Alma shops and the Port Moselle market are an easy walk from the Gare Maritime, about 5–10 minutes to the square. The beaches at Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata, the Aquarium and the Tjibaou Cultural Centre are too far for most cruise passengers to walk; use transport.

Dock or tender: Nouméa has one cruise berth at the Gare Maritime. When two ships call, the second docks at the container terminal and free shuttle buses take passengers to the cruise terminal. With three or more ships, the extra ships anchor and tender passengers ashore. Check your daily programme for which applies.

Getting to town

On foot

Free5–10 min to Place des Cocotiers

Walk off the Quai Ferry into the centre. The tourist board publishes themed walking itineraries you can follow on a phone.

Hop-on hop-off bus (Nouméa Double Deckers)

XPF 1,200 per adult (2026)Each stop served every 25 min

Starts outside the cruise terminal on cruise days, 08:00–18:30. Stops at the Moselle market (closed Mondays), Port Plaisance, Baie des Citrons, Anse Vata and the Aquarium des Lagons. Buy at the stand in front of the terminal or online. Packages add the Aquarium or a Duck Island boat.

Tanéo public bus, line 3

XPF 500 single, flat fare (2026)Check the timetable on taneo.nc

Line 3 links Quai Ferry (Les Quais), the city centre and the Port Moselle market with Baie des Citrons, the Aquarium stop and Anse Vata. The network is still rebuilding after the 2024 riots, with far fewer lines and buses than before, so check the return times before you go. Tanéo does not serve the Tjibaou Cultural Centre.

Taxi

Metered; fares not publishedAbout 15 min to the Tjibaou Cultural Centre

No rank at the cruise terminal. Ranks are at Place des Cocotiers, the Aquarium des Lagons and the municipal market, and the 24-hour taxi line is +687 28 35 12. Uber does not operate in Nouméa.

When to head back

Be back at the gangway 60 minutes before all-aboard from the centre, and leave Anse Vata, Baie des Citrons or the Tjibaou Cultural Centre at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Many ships sail from Nouméa at 16:00 or 17:00, so all-aboard can be early afternoon; check the time on your daily programme, not the brochure. Buses are infrequent since the 2024 unrest, and taxis must be phoned or found at a rank, so do not rely on catching one at the last minute. If your ship is at the container terminal, allow extra time for the shuttle.

If you are running late: From the bays, walk to the taxi rank at the Aquarium des Lagons or call +687 28 35 12. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.

Where people go wrong: Assuming a 17:00-style all-aboard and staying at the beach when the ship actually sails at 16:00, with no taxi waiting.

Nouméa is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Nouméa is easy to do yourself: the centre is on foot and the hop-on bus covers the bays and the Aquarium. A ship tour earns its price for trips beyond the city, such as Amédée lighthouse islet (about 40 minutes by boat) or Blue River Provincial Park (about an hour's drive), where a late boat or road delay could cost you the ship. It is also the simplest way to see the Tjibaou Cultural Centre, which the public bus does not serve.

Common mistakes

  • Arriving at the market in the afternoon or on a Monday.

It opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes at 12:00. Go first thing.

  • Expecting a taxi rank outside the cruise terminal.

Phone +687 28 35 12 or walk to the rank at Place des Cocotiers.

  • Relying on the public bus timetable from before 2024.

The Tanéo network was cut back after the 2024 riots. Check line 3 times on taneo.nc, or use the hop-on bus on cruise days.

  • Planning to see the New Caledonia Museum.

It is closed for renovation and had no opening date in 2026. Go to the City Museum or the Tjibaou Cultural Centre instead.

  • Paying in Australian or US dollars.

Use XPF or a card. Dollars are rarely accepted and give a poor rate.

  • Going to the Tjibaou Cultural Centre on a Monday.

    It is closed on Mondays.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
In May 2024 New Caledonia saw serious riots and blockades, a curfew and the suspension of cruise calls. Ships returned in November 2024 and the curfew was lifted on 2 December 2024. In 2026 the New Zealand government rates the territory 'exercise increased caution', and the UK says tensions have eased but protests can start with little warning. Avoid demonstrations and gatherings, follow any instructions from the French High Commission, and keep to the centre and the southern bays. Crime is low, but petty theft happens: keep valuables out of sight, do not carry large amounts of cash, take care at ATMs and avoid isolated areas, including beaches, after dark. November to April is cyclone season. Emergency number: 17 (police), 15 (medical), 18 (fire), 16 (sea rescue).
Accessibility
The ship docks alongside, so there is no tender transfer unless three ships are in port. The walk from the terminal to Place des Cocotiers is short. The terminal has public toilets with baby-changing. Accessibility of the hop-on buses and Tanéo buses is not published on the pages we checked, so ask at the stand or the information desk. The waterfront promenade between Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata is a long seafront path.
If it rains
Spend the morning in the Port Moselle market and the City Museum, then take the hop-on bus or line 3 to the Aquarium des Lagons, which opens at 09:00 on cruise days. The Tjibaou Cultural Centre is largely indoors and worth the taxi on a wet day, except on Mondays.
Crowds
Nouméa takes one ship at the terminal, so crowds are moderate. On two- and three-ship days the hop-on bus, the Aquarium and Duck Island fill first. Do the market and the centre early while groups head out on tours, and go to the bays around midday.

Nouméa cruise port FAQ

Is Nouméa a tender port?

Usually not. One ship docks at the Gare Maritime downtown. A second ship uses the container terminal with a free shuttle, and only a third ship or more tenders.

Is Nouméa walkable from the cruise port?

The centre is. Place des Cocotiers is about 5–10 minutes' walk. The beaches need a bus, the hop-on bus or a taxi.

How do I get from Nouméa cruise port to Anse Vata?

Take Tanéo line 3 (XPF 500 single, 2026) or the hop-on hop-off bus (XPF 1,200, 2026) from outside the terminal, or phone a taxi on +687 28 35 12.

Is Nouméa safe for cruise passengers?

The city has been calm for visitors since cruises returned in late 2024, but governments still advise increased caution. Avoid protests and isolated areas after dark.

What currency is used in Nouméa?

The CFP franc (XPF). Cards are widely accepted; Australian and US dollars are not, or only at a poor rate.

What can I do in Nouméa in one day from a cruise ship?

The market and the centre on foot in the morning, then the beach at Baie des Citrons, the Aquarium and Anse Vata by bus in the afternoon.

Beaches near Nouméa cruise port?

Baie des Citrons, sheltered and supervised, and Anse Vata, windier, both reached by line 3 or the hop-on bus.

Is the Tjibaou Cultural Centre worth it on a cruise day?

Yes if you have four hours and it is not a Monday. It is about 15 minutes by taxi; the public bus does not go there.
