Ashore from 08:45, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Punta del Este has no cruise pier: ships anchor in the bay and tender passengers into the marina on the peninsula, a ride the national port ministry put at about 25 minutes in 2025. From the landing you walk everywhere on the peninsula; Avenida Gorlero is about 10 minutes away. Be back at the tender landing 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Punta del Este is Uruguay's best-known beach resort, built on a narrow peninsula with a calm bay on one side and Atlantic surf on the other. Cruise ships anchor offshore and tender into the working marina, where sea lions wait by the fish-cleaning tables. Everything on the peninsula is within walking distance: the lighthouse, the southern tip at Punta Salinas, the La Mano sculpture on Playa Brava and the shops of Avenida Gorlero. Casapueblo, the white cliffside museum at Punta Ballena, is the one sight that needs a car. Calls are usually short, often 08:00 to 16:00, so the tender queue sets the pace of the day.

Where the ship docks

  • Punta del Este port – tender landing (La Pastora pier area) · 0.8 km to the centre

Tenders land in the marina on the bay side of the peninsula. Steps up to street level. Toilets, drinking water, Wi-Fi and security are listed among port services. Taxis are available but limited in number.

Can you walk? Yes, about 10 min. Avenida Gorlero is about a 10-minute walk from the landing. A relaxed loop of the whole peninsula (rambla, lighthouse, Punta Salinas, Playa Brava) takes 2–3 hours on foot. Pavements are flat; the Atlantic side can be very windy.

Tender: There is no cruise berth. Ships anchor in the bay and passengers go ashore by the ship's tenders to the Punta del Este port (marina) on the peninsula. Maldonado's tourism department lists five tender berths for cruise passengers. Uruguay's Ministry of Transport (MTOP) said in December 2025 that the ship-to-port trip takes about 25 minutes and should be shortened. A 60 m covered area was installed at Parada 3 on the La Pastora pier for the 2025–26 season. From the landing you climb a flight of steps to street level. Loyalty-tier passengers often get tender priority; others may need tender tickets until an open call is announced. A private proposal for a two-ship cruise pier at Las Delicias had been approved in principle but had not gone to tender as of November 2024, so plan on tendering.

Getting to town

On foot

FreeAbout 10 min to Avenida Gorlero; 2–3 hours for a full peninsula loop

From the landing climb the steps to the rambla. Gorlero, the lighthouse and Punta Salinas are all short walks. The La Mano sculpture is on Playa Brava at the neck of the peninsula, 10–15 minutes beyond the bus terminal area.

Taxi or remise (private hire car) to Casapueblo

Metered or agreed fare; confirm before setting offAbout 15 min each way (13 km)

Taxis wait near the port but there are not many on multi-ship days. Agree the return pick-up time if you want the driver to wait. A Casapueblo visit adds at least 1.5 hours to the day.

Boat to Isla Gorriti

Check the fare at the marinaAbout 15 min crossing

Water taxis cross from the port to Isla Gorriti, an island with beaches and pine forest. Services are busiest in peak season. Only for long calls: you then have two boat queues to manage.

When to head back

Be in the tender queue at the landing 90 minutes before all-aboard (14:00 for a 15:30 all-aboard).

The tender ride alone took about 25 minutes in the 2025–26 season, and everyone returns in the last two hours. From Avenida Gorlero allow 10 minutes' walk to the landing; from Casapueblo leave 2 hours before all-aboard.

If you are running late: If you are running late from Casapueblo or Playa Brava, take any taxi straight to the port. If you will miss the last tender, call the port agent number printed on your ship's daily programme. Uruguay's emergency number is 911.

Where people go wrong: Passengers treat the 10-minute walk as the whole return and forget the tender queue and 25-minute ride back to the ship.

Punta del Este is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

What to see

Port and sea lions

A working marina where fishing boats moor beside yachts and sea lions gather at the fish-cleaning tables.

The 25 m lighthouse, first lit here in 1860, and the small sky-blue church next to it.

20 minutesFree to view from outside

The tower is normally closed to visitors; Maldonado's tourism office says it opens only on Heritage Day in October.

Punta Salinas

The southern tip of the peninsula, with an anchor from the German battleship Graf Spee and views to Isla de Lobos and its sea lion colony.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Do the peninsula on your own: it is flat, compact and safe, and a guide adds little. Casapueblo is the case for a ship tour or a pre-booked driver. It is 13 km away, taxis are scarce on busy days, and you are already on a tender port with an early all-aboard. A ship tour also takes the tender-return risk off you, because the ship waits for its own tours.

Common mistakes

  • Treating it like a docked port and coming back 30 minutes before all-aboard.

Join the tender queue 90 minutes before. The ride alone took about 25 minutes in 2025–26.

  • Starting a Casapueblo trip after lunch on an 08:00–16:00 call.

Go first thing or not at all, and book the driver's return time in advance.

  • Reading 'U$' or '$' on a price tag as US dollars.

Prices marked $ are usually Uruguayan pesos. Ask, and check the card slip currency.

  • Paying cash for meals.

Non-residents paying with a foreign card are exempt from VAT on restaurant bills (15 Nov 2025–30 Apr 2026; the government has announced an extension for the 2026–27 season).

  • Underestimating the wind and sun on the Atlantic side.

Bring a windproof layer, a hat and sunscreen even on mild days.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
The peninsula is calm and well policed in the cruise season, and the port area gained extra security cameras for 2025–26. The main hazards are natural: strong surf and currents on Playa Brava, strong wind at Punta Salinas and sun exposure. Keep away from the sea lions on the dock; they are wild animals and can lunge for fish. Take normal care with bags in crowds on Gorlero. Emergency number: 911.
Scams to know
  • Currency confusion on price tags: prices are often marked with '$' meaning Uruguayan pesos, and the 'U$' style can be mistaken for US dollars. Confirm the currency before paying.
  • Paying in US dollar cash can cost more: at least one port-side restaurant adds a surcharge for dollar cash. Pay by foreign card instead.
Accessibility
Getting ashore needs a tender transfer, which depends on sea conditions and the ship's policy for wheelchair users; ask the ship before the day. From the landing a flight of steps leads up to street level. On the peninsula the rambla and Gorlero are flat, but kerbs and pavements vary. At least one ship's peninsula tour (Holland America) is listed as not wheelchair accessible. The lighthouse interior is closed and stepped.
If it rains
Rain and wind make the Atlantic side unpleasant. Spend the time on Gorlero and in cafés, or take a taxi to Casapueblo, where the museum is indoors. Rough seas can also slow or suspend tenders, so return earlier than planned.
Crowds
Only 39 cruise calls were planned for the 2025–26 season, so the town is rarely overwhelmed, but some days bring two ships (for example MSC Splendida and Celebrity Equinox on 18 December 2026). Tender queues are the real bottleneck: go ashore after the first rush and come back before the last hour. La Mano is busiest when shore tours arrive mid-morning.
