Quick answer: Ships berth in the working port and a shuttle bus takes passengers about 2 km to the VTP passenger terminal in the Barón area; you cannot walk out through the cargo berths. From VTP, the Merval train, a taxi or a 30-minute walk takes you to Plaza Sotomayor and the funiculars up to Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción. Be back at VTP for the shuttle 75 minutes before all-aboard.
Valparaíso is a working container port with a UNESCO-listed old town spread over steep hills behind it. Many cruises start or end here, with passengers transferring to Santiago 115 km away, but a port-of-call day works well if you stay in the city. The day revolves around the hills: ride a funicular (ascensor) up, walk the lanes and lookouts of Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, and see Neruda's house, La Sebastiana, on Cerro Bellavista. Street crime is a real issue here, so carry little and keep your phone out of sight.

Valparaíso Terminal de Pasajeros (VTP) · 2.5 km to the centre
Opened in 2016 and run by an AGUNSA subsidiary. It sits in the Barón sector beside the Merval rail line, about 2 km from the cruise berths; passengers are carried between ship and terminal by shuttle bus. Inside: immigration and customs for turnaround passengers, tourist information, currency exchange, a snack bar and shops. The port authority describes it as having a direct connection to the regional train.
Can you walk? Partly, about 30 min. You must take the shuttle from the ship to VTP. From VTP it is a flat walk of roughly 30 minutes along the waterfront avenues to Plaza Sotomayor. The hills themselves are steep and cobbled; use the funiculars to go up and walk down.
Getting to town
Port shuttle (ship to VTP)
Provided by the port for cruise passengersA few minutes; about 2 km
Walking out from the berths is not permitted. Queues build when two ships are in or when turnaround passengers and luggage are moving.
Merval train (Metro Valparaíso)
About CLP$700–1,000 a trip depending on time of day; tap a contactless bank card at the gate (2026)A few minutes from Barón to Puerto station; 10–15 min to Viña del Mar
Barón station is next to the terminal. Ride west to Puerto station for Plaza Sotomayor and Muelle Prat, or east to Viña del Mar.
Taxi or ride-hailing app
About CLP$3,000–5,000 for short trips in the tourist area (2026)10–15 min to Plaza Sotomayor; longer to the hilltops
Uber, Cabify and inDrive operate. For taxis, agree the price for longer trips first and check the amount before you pay by card.
Funiculars (ascensores)
About CLP$300–500 a ride; Espíritu Santo about CLP$100 (2026)1–2 min each
2026 guides list Concepción, El Peral, Artillería and Reina Victoria as the main ones. El Peral leaves near Plaza Sotomayor for Paseo Yugoslavo on Cerro Alegre; Espíritu Santo serves Cerro Bellavista and La Sebastiana. Lifts close for repairs without much notice, so ask at the tourist kiosk.
When to head back
Be back at the VTP terminal 75 minutes before all-aboard (16:15 for a 17:30 all-aboard), so you are on board 60 minutes before.
The shuttle from VTP to the berth is the bottleneck: allow for a queue and a security check. Coming from the hills, ride a funicular down and take the Merval or a taxi from the plan (the flat lower town); finding a taxi on the hilltops can take time.
If you are running late: Use a ride-hailing app or a taxi to VTP; it is 2.5 km from Plaza Sotomayor. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Where people go wrong: Expecting to walk off the ship into town, then underestimating the shuttle and hill-to-terminal time on the way back.
Valparaíso is one day. Time the whole cruise.

On your own or a ship excursion?
The city itself is easy without a tour once you are at VTP: the train or a short taxi reaches Plaza Sotomayor, and the funiculars do the climbing. A guided walk earns its keep if you are nervous about street crime, because guides know which streets to avoid. A ship's tour is the sensible choice for Santiago (115 km each way), the Casablanca Valley wineries, or Isla Negra, where traffic on the motorway decides whether you make all-aboard. If your cruise ends here, book your Santiago or airport transfer in advance rather than finding a taxi at the terminal.
| What | Ship | On your own | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valparaíso hills, funiculars and La Sebastiana | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Merval about CLP$700–1,000 each way, funiculars about CLP$300–500 a ride, La Sebastiana CLP$11,000 (2026) | Usually large, but depends on your line's price |
Common mistakes
Planning to walk off the ship into town.
Berths are in the cargo port. Take the shuttle to VTP, then the Merval, a taxi or a 30-minute walk.
Visiting on a Monday and expecting La Sebastiana and the Baburizza museum to be open.
Both close on Mondays. Use the Museo Marítimo Nacional, open daily, and the hills instead.
Walking up every hill.
Ride the funiculars up and walk down. The streets are very steep and cobbled.
Carrying a phone in hand and a camera on show.
UK government advice says muggings are frequent in Valparaíso. Keep valuables out of sight and stay on busy streets.
Trying to fit Santiago into a port-of-call day.
Santiago is 115 km away. Stay in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, or take the ship's tour.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- The UK government says muggings happen frequently in Valparaíso and increasingly involve weapons, and it lists the city among places where distraction scams target visitors. Stay on the main tourist routes of Cerro Alegre, Cerro Concepción and the lower town, keep your phone and camera out of sight, carry a copy of your passport rather than the original, and do not resist if robbed. Avoid quiet streets and stairways, especially late in the day. Avoid demonstrations. Pavements on the hills are steep and uneven. Emergency number: 133 (police), 131 (ambulance), 132 (fire), 137 (sea rescue).
- Scams to know
- Liquid spill: someone spills a liquid on you and steals valuables while 'helping' clean it off. Walk away and check your bag.
- Distraction robbery: one person asks a question or causes a fuss while an accomplice takes your bag or phone.
- Inflated card payments: drivers add extra zeros or use a card reader you cannot see. Check the amount before you tap or enter a PIN.
- Unofficial tour sellers near the port: book through the ship, the tourist office or an established operator.
- Accessibility
- The VTP terminal and the ship shuttle are the easy part. Valparaíso's historic quarter is built on steep hills with cobbles, stairways and narrow pavements, which makes it hard going with a wheelchair or walking difficulties. The funiculars help but have steps or uneven platforms at some stations. The lower town around Plaza Sotomayor and Muelle Prat is flat, and the Merval train links VTP with Viña del Mar's level seafront. La Sebastiana is spread over many narrow floors.
- If it rains
- Rain makes the cobbled hills slippery. Spend the day in museums: the Museo Marítimo Nacional (open daily), Palacio Baburizza and La Sebastiana (both closed Mondays), and the free Museo de Historia Natural in the lower town (Tuesday–Saturday). Taxis are the safest way between them on a wet day.
- Crowds
- Valparaíso receives far fewer ships than Caribbean or Mediterranean ports: 31 passenger ship calls in the 2024–25 season. On turnaround days the terminal is busy with luggage and coaches to Santiago, so the shuttle can queue. On the hills, tour groups gather at Paseo Gervasoni, Paseo Atkinson and Paseo Yugoslavo from mid-morning; go early, and visit La Sebastiana at opening or after lunch.

Viña del Mar's seafront is 10–15 minutes by Merval train from Barón station next to the terminal. The water is cold and the surf strong.
