Quick answer: Most cruise ships tie up at the Muelle Luis Piedra Buena, a 950 m pier whose landward end is about 200 m from the town centre; a free port shuttle runs along the pier. When more than two ships call, one may be sent to the Almirante Storni pier about 4 km away, with shuttle buses to town. The penguins at Punta Tombo (about 180 km) and Península Valdés (about 100 km to Puerto Pirámides) are long day trips best done on a ship tour.
Puerto Madryn is a small, windy Patagonian town on the Golfo Nuevo, and almost everyone comes here for wildlife. The cruise season runs from October to early April, overlapping the Magellanic penguin season at Punta Tombo (mid-September to early April) and, until December, the southern right whales off Península Valdés and El Doradillo. The town itself is a long beach, a seafront promenade and a few museums. The big decision is how far to go: Punta Tombo and Península Valdés each take most of a port day, while Punta Loma's sea lions and El Doradillo's whale beach are short trips you can do by taxi.

Plan this day to my shipWhere the ship docks
Muelle Comandante Luis Piedra Buena · 0.2 km to the centre
The main cruise pier, about 950 m long and extended in 2016–17 to take two large ships at once. The pier entrance is about 200 m from downtown. The Port Administration runs a free shuttle bus between the gangway and the pier entrance while ships are alongside. Tour buses (up to about 20 per ship) load inside the restricted area.
Muelle Almirante Storni · 4 km to the centre
A cargo and fishing pier east of the centre in an industrial area with no visitor facilities. Cruise ships use it only when more than two ships need to berth at the same time. Free shuttle buses run to the town centre.
Can you walk? Yes, about 15 min. From the Piedra Buena pier, take the free pier shuttle to the pier entrance, then it is about 200 m to the centre and the beachfront Avenida Roca. If your ship is at the Storni pier, about 4 km out, use the shuttle bus. The town is flat but very windy.
Getting to town
Free pier shuttle and on foot (Piedra Buena pier)
FreeA few minutes by shuttle along the pier, then about 3 min on foot to the centre
The port's shuttle runs between the ship and the pier entrance all day. From the entrance walk into the centre and along the Costanera beside the main beach.
Shuttle bus from the Storni pier
Free (2026)About 4 km to the centre
Only when your ship is sent to Storni. Check the last shuttle time on your daily programme.
Taxi or remis (private car)
Agree the price before you leave (2026)About 45 min to Punta Loma on mostly dirt roads; El Doradillo is about 15 km north
Taxis work for town, beaches, El Doradillo and Punta Loma. There is no public transport to Punta Loma or Punta Tombo. For Punta Loma agree waiting time as well as the fare. Many small businesses prefer cash, and cash machines can run out on busy days, so withdraw pesos early.
Tour to Punta Tombo
Reserve entry AR$35,000 for foreign adults (2026–27 season), paid digitally, plus the tourAbout 2 hours each way; about 7 hours in total
Punta Tombo is about 180 km south; the last 22 km are gravel. Entry cannot be paid in cash. The reserve is open 08:00–18:00 in season.
Tour to Península Valdés and Puerto Pirámides
Protected-area entry AR$50,000 for foreign adults (from September 2026), plus the tourAbout 1.5 hours each way to Puerto Pirámides on paved road
Puerto Pirámides is about 100 km north. Whale-watching boats leave from there; the traditional boat trip costs AR$195,000 per adult in the high season of 1 September to 15 December 2026.
When to head back
Be at the pier entrance 60 minutes before all-aboard if your ship is at Piedra Buena; leave the town centre 75 minutes before. If your ship is at Storni, be on a shuttle 90 minutes before. Do Punta Tombo and Península Valdés only on a ship's tour.
On a town day the risk is small, but the pier shuttle and two ships returning at once can mean queues at the pier entrance. Independent trips to Punta Tombo (about 2–3 hours each way, partly gravel) or Puerto Pirámides (about 1.5 hours each way) leave no margin for a breakdown, a puncture on the gravel or wildlife on the road on a typical eight- or nine-hour call.
If you are running late: In town, take a taxi to the pier entrance on Avenida Roca. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Where people go wrong: Going to Punta Tombo or Península Valdés independently and running out of time on the long road back.
Puerto Madryn is one day. Time the whole cruise.

On your own or a ship excursion?
This is one of the few ports where the ship's tour is usually the right choice. Punta Tombo and Península Valdés are 100–180 km away on roads with gravel sections, and a late return is a real risk; the ship will wait for its own tours, not for you. Do the town, the beach, Punta Cuevas, El Doradillo or Punta Loma on your own instead. A private remis can work for Punta Loma, which is only about 17 km away.
| What | Ship | On your own | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Punta Loma sea lions | Holland America's Punta Loma and Fitzroy dolphin boat tour: from US$209, about 3 hours (2026); other lines vary | Taxi or remis with waiting time, plus reserve entry (AR$12,000 for foreign adults in 2025) | Usually large for two to four people sharing a car, but you see the colony from the cliff top, not from a boat |
| Punta Tombo penguins | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Not recommended independently: 180 km each way with 22 km of gravel | Take the ship tour |
| Península Valdés and whale watching | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Entry AR$50,000 plus a whale boat AR$195,000 (2026), plus transport | Take the ship tour on a normal-length call |
Common mistakes
Trying to reach Punta Tombo independently on a short call.
It is about 180 km each way with 22 km of gravel and no public transport. Book the ship's tour.
Expecting to pay reserve fees in cash.
Punta Tombo entry must be paid digitally; bring a card that works abroad.
Planning to see whales in February or March.
Southern right whales are present from about June to December. Late-season cruises see penguins and sea lions instead.
Assuming your ship will be at the town pier.
On busy days one ship may be sent to the Storni pier, about 4 km out. Check your daily programme and the shuttle times.
Relying on finding a cash machine later in the day.
Cash machines can run out and many small businesses prefer cash. Withdraw pesos as soon as you are ashore.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Puerto Madryn is a calm small town and safe for visitors with ordinary care. Watch your belongings on the beach and in crowded spots, and use known taxis or remises rather than flagging random cars. The real hazards are the weather and wildlife: strong wind, sun and cold water. On wildlife trips keep your distance from animals and stay on marked paths, especially among the penguins at Punta Tombo. Gravel roads outside town are slow; drivers should keep to the 40 km/h limit and watch for animals at dawn and dusk. Emergency number: 911.
- Scams to know
- Unofficial tour sellers at the pier: book through the ship, the town's tourist office or an agency the tourist office recommends.
- Unagreed taxi fares for longer trips: settle the price and waiting time before going to Punta Loma or El Doradillo.
- Bag theft on the beach: keep valuables with you rather than on the sand while you walk or swim.
- Accessibility
- The free pier shuttle removes the long walk along the Piedra Buena pier, and the town centre and Costanera are flat. Punta Tombo is building a new concrete, step-free access path and esplanade for the 2026–27 season, but the trails among the penguins are long and partly unpaved. Ship tour coaches to Punta Tombo and Península Valdés may not be wheelchair accessible; ask the tour desk. Holland America marks its Punta Loma boat tour as strenuous and not wheelchair accessible.
- If it rains
- Rain is less common than wind here. On a wet or very windy day, stay in town: walk to Punta Cuevas if it is dry enough, and use the cafés along Avenida Roca. Boat trips, including whale watching at Puerto Pirámides, can be cancelled in strong wind, so check with the ship before you go.
- Crowds
- Puerto Madryn expects about 44 calls and 84,000 cruise visitors in the 2026–27 season, starting on 24 October, and up to two large ships can share the Piedra Buena pier. On two-ship days, most passengers leave on tours in the morning, so the town is quiet until mid-afternoon and the pier shuttle is busiest at the end of the day. Go back to the ship early on those days.

Not yet confirmed
- Celebrity's Spanish port page puts the port about four miles (6.4 km) from the centre, which conflicts with other sources for the Piedra Buena pier; it may describe the Storni pier.
- Whether passengers may walk the full length of the Piedra Buena pier instead of using the shuttle on every call.
- Punta Loma entry fee for 2026 (only the April 2025 figure was found).
- Ecocentro's 2026 opening hours and entry price.
- Punta Tombo road closures: a recent local news headline reported the reserve closed because of the poor state of the access road, but the article could not be opened to confirm dates.
- Typical taxi or remis fares to Punta Loma and El Doradillo.
