Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Montevideo is a docked port: ships berth inside the commercial port right next to Ciudad Vieja, and you walk out of the gate into the Old Town. Mercado del Puerto is a few steps away and Plaza Independencia about 15 minutes on foot, so you need no transport for the historic centre. Be back at the port gate at least 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if you go out to the beaches at Pocitos.

Montevideo is one of the easiest calls in South America: the ship ties up next to the old colonial grid and the city's best-known lunch spot, Mercado del Puerto, sits almost at the port gate. The day is about walking Ciudad Vieja and the pedestrian street to Plaza Independencia, eating grilled beef, and, on a longer call, following the Rambla out to the city beaches. The season runs from about October to March, when the weather is warm and carnival events fill January to March. Sundays are quiet in the Old Town, with many shops and some museums closed.

When to leave Montevideo

Times include the way back
  • Plaza Independencia (Old Town)Walk along Peatonal Sarandí, about 15 min 16:15
  • Mercado del PuertoWalk to the port gate, about 2 min 16:25
  • Playa PocitosTaxi or Uber along the Rambla, about 20 min 16:00
  • Playa RamírezTaxi or Uber, about 15 min 16:00

Times are port time, the time your phone shows ashore.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Port of Montevideo cruise berths (passenger exit opposite Mercado del Puerto) · 0.2 km to the centre

Cruise ships berth at the jetties of the commercial port, which runs along the north edge of Ciudad Vieja. Passengers leave through the port gate onto the Rambla 25 de Agosto beside Mercado del Puerto. Metered taxis wait at the port. MSC and Costa also change passengers here, so expect luggage and coach traffic on those days.

Can you walk? Yes, about 15 min. Mercado del Puerto is a few steps from the gate. From there the pedestrian Peatonal Sarandí runs east through the Old Town to the Puerta de la Ciudadela and Plaza Independencia, about 1 km and 15 minutes at an easy pace. The grid is flat; pavements are uneven in places.

Getting to town

On foot

Free2 min to Mercado del Puerto; about 15 min to Plaza Independencia

Leave the port gate, cross the Rambla 25 de Agosto to Mercado del Puerto, then follow Peatonal Sarandí east to Plaza Independencia and Teatro Solís.

Tourist bus (Bus Turístico de Montevideo)

$U 1,000 for 24 hours at launch (2024); resellers list it from about US$25 (2026)Central circuit every 30 min; Rambla circuit every 95 min

Electric double-deckers run by the city since November 2024. The Central circuit has 12 stops from Mercado del Puerto to Parque Rodó. The Rambla circuit, which follows the coast, runs far less often, so check the return time before relying on it on a port day.

Taxi or ride-hailing

Metered; check the fare in the app or agree it first (2026)About 20 min to Pocitos beach in normal traffic

Metered taxis wait at the port, and Uber operates in Montevideo. Taxis have a thick glass partition; wear the seat belt, because passengers can be injured against it in a sudden stop.

City bus (STM)

Cash fares cost more than the STM card fare; check the current fare (2026)Varies by route

Buses along the Rambla stop at the beaches, but they are slower than a taxi and routes are hard to work out on a short call. Use a map app for the route number.

When to head back

Be back at the port gate 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Plaza Independencia 75 minutes before, and Pocitos or Playa Ramírez 90 minutes before.

The walk back from Plaza Independencia is only 15 minutes, but the port gate can have queues for security and on turnaround days the area is busy with coaches. From the beaches, Rambla traffic in the late afternoon is the main risk, and the tourist bus's Rambla circuit runs only every 95 minutes, so take a taxi or Uber back.

If you are running late: From anywhere in the city, take a taxi or Uber to the port gate by Mercado del Puerto. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Going out to Pocitos and waiting for the infrequent Rambla tourist bus to get back instead of taking a taxi.

Montevideo is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

In March 2024, eight Norwegian Dawn passengers on a private tour came back to the pier in São Tomé more than an hour after all-aboard. Getting back on board took six days, seven countries and over $5,000. The details

  • The ship charges for the easy part.

Carnival sells a coach to Rome for US$129.99 a person. The train is from €9.20 return. PortTrip tells you which train, and the last one that gets you back. The details

What to eat

  • Asado or mixed grill (parrillada) · El Palenque and the other grill counters in Mercado del Puerto
  • Chivito (steak sandwich with ham, cheese and egg) · Bars (boliches) in Ciudad Vieja
  • A glass of Tannat, Uruguay's signature red wine · Grill restaurants in Mercado del Puerto and wine bars in Ciudad Vieja
  • Grass-fed steak · Parrillas around Mercado del Puerto

On your own or a ship excursion?

Skip the ship tour for the Old Town: it starts at the port gate and is easy to walk alone. A ship tour is worth it for the wineries of rural Montevideo, which are hard to reach without a car, and for any trip to Punta del Este or Colonia del Sacramento, both long journeys where a late return is a real risk.

Common mistakes

  • Paying for a ship's Old Town tour.

The Old Town starts at the port gate. Walk it on your own and spend the money on lunch.

  • Arriving at Mercado del Puerto at 13:30.

Get there by 12:30. Half the ship has the same plan and the counters fill fast.

  • Expecting the Old Town to be busy on a Sunday.

Many shops and Museo Andes 1972 are closed on Sundays. On a Sunday call, focus on the squares, the market and the Rambla.

  • Relying on the tourist bus's Rambla circuit to get back.

It runs only every 95 minutes. Take a taxi or Uber back from the beaches.

  • Leaving a phone on a café table.

Phone and bag theft at outdoor tables and crowded markets is common. Keep valuables in a zipped bag.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Montevideo is calm by regional standards in the daytime, but petty crime, muggings and armed robbery are more common in Ciudad Vieja, around Plaza Independencia, on 18 de Julio Avenue and in the port area, according to the Canadian government. Tourist police patrol the Old Town in summer. In the daytime normal city awareness is enough; the Old Town empties after business hours, so do not wander its side streets after dark. Watch for thieves on motorcycles who snatch phones and bags at traffic lights, cash machines and pavement edges. Use Uber or a taxi rather than walking alone at night. Emergency number: 911.
Scams to know
  • Motorcycle snatch theft: two people on a motorbike pull up beside a pedestrian at a junction, cash machine or kerb and grab a phone or bag. Keep phones away from the kerb side.
  • Overcharging and unofficial transport around tourist areas: use the metered taxis at the port or a ride-hailing app instead of drivers who approach you.
  • Café-table theft: phones and bags left on outdoor tables or chair backs are taken in seconds, especially in crowded market areas.
Accessibility
The route from the port gate to Mercado del Puerto and along Peatonal Sarandí is flat and mostly pedestrianised, which makes Montevideo one of the more accessible ports in the region. Pavements elsewhere in the Old Town are uneven and kerbs can be high. Accessible taxis are not easy to find at the pier; arrange one in advance through the ship or a local operator. The tourist bus uses double-deck vehicles; ask about step-free boarding before you buy.
If it rains
Rain does not ruin Montevideo. Mercado del Puerto is covered, and Ciudad Vieja has museums within a short walk: Museo Andes 1972, the Museo del Carnaval near the market, and a guided tour of Teatro Solís. The city has more than 30 museums in total. Skip the Rambla and beaches.
Crowds
Montevideo expected about 100 cruise calls in the 2025–26 season. Mercado del Puerto is the pinch point at lunchtime; eat before 12:30 or after 14:00. Plaza Independencia and Peatonal Sarandí stay comfortable even on busy days. MSC and Costa turnaround days add coach and luggage traffic at the port gate in the morning and late afternoon.
