Quick answer: Ships berth at the Muelle Comercial, a long pier that ends on Avenida Maipú at the edge of the town centre, so you walk ashore and into town with no transport. The national park (12 km) and the End of the World Train need a minibus, taxi, the official train transfer from the port or a tour. Be back at the gangway 60 minutes before all-aboard, and leave the national park on a minibus that gets you to Maipú at least 90 minutes before.
Ushuaia sits on the Beagle Channel with mountains directly behind it, and the cruise pier runs out from the bottom of the town. Many calls here start or end Antarctic voyages, so the town is busy with passengers coming and going all season. The three classic outings are a Beagle Channel boat trip from the Tourist Pier next door, Tierra del Fuego National Park, and the End of the World Train, which runs into the park. Weather changes quickly and can be cold and windy even in summer, so carry warm, waterproof layers. Prices are in Argentine pesos and change often; the municipal tourist office publishes a daily sheet of current fares.

Muelle Comercial (commercial and cruise pier) · 0.5 km to the centre
The main wharf, shared by cruise ships, expedition ships and cargo. The pier gate is on Avenida Maipú; the artisans' market and the Tourist Pier (Muelle Turístico) for Beagle Channel boats are next to it. The port has been under national intervention (ANPYN) since January 2026 after a dispute with the provincial port authority; cruise operations continued through the 2025–26 season.
Can you walk? Yes, about 10 min. Walk along the pier to the gate on Avenida Maipú, then one block uphill to Avenida San Martín, the main shopping street. The waterfront is flat; streets north of San Martín climb steeply. The Maritime Museum is about a 10-minute walk east along the waterfront from the pier gate.
Getting to town
On foot
FreeAbout 10 min to Avenida San Martín
Walk the pier to Avenida Maipú. The tourist office (Prefectura Naval Argentina 470, open 08:30–20:30) and the Tourist Pier ticket booths are by the pier entrance.
Minibus to Tierra del Fuego National Park
Bus fare paid locally; park entry AR$40,000 extra (2026)About 30 min to the park; 12 km to the entrance
Regular minibuses leave from the corner of Maipú and Fadul on the waterfront and stop at the park entrance, the train station, Ensenada Zaratiegui, the Alakush visitor centre, the Isla Entre Ríos campsite and Bahía Lapataia. Confirm the last return time at the kiosk before you buy. There are no ATMs in the park; carry pesos.
End of the World Train (Tren del Fin del Mundo)
AR$70,000 adult, AR$35,000 ages 4–12, plus park entry AR$40,000 (September 2026)About 1 h 50 min round trip on the train
The station is 8 km west of town. Departures listed by the tourist office for 2026: 09:45, 12:15 and 15:00 (in February 2026 they were 09:30, 12:00 and 15:00). Morning trains are largely sold to agencies, so book online in advance. In summer an official transfer has run from the port (February 2026: 08:30, 11:30 and 14:00, returning from the station at 11:30, 14:30 and 17:00; AR$20,000 return).
Beagle Channel boat trip from the Tourist Pier
AR$85,000–125,200 depending on operator, plus AR$5,250 port fee where not included (September 2026)2.5–4 hours
Tickets are sold at the Tourist Pier (Prefectura Naval Argentina and Lasserre); arrive 30 minutes before departure. Most operators sail mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Afternoon sailings return too late for a typical 17:30 all-aboard.
Taxi or remis
Metered in town; agree the fare for the park or glacier firstAbout 20 min to the train station or the Martial Glacier base
Remis fares are agreed before the trip. Some drivers add a surcharge for card payment, so ask first or carry pesos.
When to head back
Be back at the gangway 60 minutes before all-aboard (16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard). From the national park, board a minibus that reaches Maipú and Fadul at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
The pier is long, so allow time to walk its length to your berth. Park minibuses run to a fixed timetable; missing one can mean a long wait at Lapataia. For the train, take the 12:00/12:15 departure at the latest on a 17:30 all-aboard, and plan the return transfer or a taxi from the station in advance.
If you are running late: From the park or the train station, ask staff or another visitor to call a remis; it is about 12 km back to the pier. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Where people go wrong: Booking an afternoon Beagle Channel boat or a late train that returns after the ship's all-aboard.

On your own or a ship excursion?
Ushuaia town and the Beagle Channel boats are easy on your own: everything starts within a few minutes' walk of the pier. Buy a morning boat trip at the Tourist Pier and you will be back by early afternoon. The national park and train are where the ship's tour earns its price on a short call: the train's morning seats are largely sold to agencies, the park is 12 km away on timetabled minibuses, and the tour combines both with a guaranteed return. Penguin landings on Isla Martillo (Ushuaia Boating) take about 4.5 hours with a road transfer and are only realistic on a long call; ship catamaran trips view penguins from the boat and do not land.
| What | Ship | On your own | Saving |

Common mistakes
Booking an afternoon Beagle Channel boat on a 17:30 all-aboard.
Most afternoon sailings leave at 15:00–15:30 and take 3 hours. Take a morning boat.
Turning up for the End of the World Train without a ticket.
Book online in advance; morning trains are largely reserved for agencies.
Expecting the train ticket to include the national park.
Park entry (AR$40,000 in 2026) is extra and required to ride.
Dressing for the season instead of the weather.
Wind and rain arrive quickly even in summer, especially on boat decks. Carry a warm, waterproof layer, hat and gloves.
Relying on a card in the national park.
Carry Argentine pesos. There are no ATMs in the park, and some taxis and shops add a surcharge for cards.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Ushuaia is a small, calm town and visitors rarely have problems. The real hazards are weather and terrain: cold wind on boat decks, slippery ramps down to the boats at low tide, and wet or muddy trails in the park and at the glacier. Stay on marked trails, do not feed wildlife, and take warm layers and water. Streets above San Martín are steep. Use licensed taxis or agree a remis fare in advance. Emergency number: 101 (police), 107 (ambulance), 100 (fire).
- Scams to know
- Card surcharges: some taxis and businesses add about 10% for card payment. Ask before paying or carry pesos.
- Taxi-queue pricing: at busy ranks drivers may quote a high fixed price. Use a metered taxi in town, or agree a remis fare before you get in.
- Prices that exclude the port fee: several Beagle Channel operators quote fares without the AR$5,250 Tourist Pier fee (2026). Ask for the total.
- Accessibility
- The pier and the waterfront are flat, but the pier is long and Avenida San Martín is one block uphill, with steep streets beyond. Beagle Channel boats are boarded by marine ramps that can be very steep at low tide, and cruise line catamaran tours are listed as not wheelchair accessible. In the national park, Bahía Lapataia has accessible boardwalks, a reserved parking space and, in high season, an accessible toilet. The municipal tourism site has an accessible Ushuaia section.
- If it rains
- Wet, windy days are common. Spend the time in the Maritime Museum and former prison, which fills two hours easily, then the End of the World Museum and the free museums along Maipú. Boats sail in most weather but can be cancelled in very strong wind; the train runs in rain and is covered.
- Crowds
- Ushuaia handled 495 ship calls and over 135,000 cruise passengers in 2025–26, and calls bunch up in December to February. Boats, the train and park minibuses are busiest mid-morning when several ships are in. Buy boat tickets as soon as you are ashore, book the train before the cruise, and visit the Maritime Museum after the morning tour groups leave.
Ushuaia cruise port FAQ
Is Ushuaia a tender port?
No. Cruise ships berth at the Muelle Comercial, a long pier that ends on Avenida Maipú in the town centre.
Is Ushuaia walkable from the cruise port?
Yes. Avenida San Martín is about 10 minutes' walk from the ship, and the Maritime Museum about 10 minutes further along the waterfront.
How do I get from Ushuaia cruise port to Tierra del Fuego National Park?
Take a regular minibus from Maipú and Fadul on the waterfront, a taxi or remis, the End of the World Train with a transfer, or a tour. Park entry was AR$40,000 in 2026.
How much is the End of the World Train?
AR$70,000 per adult in September 2026, plus park entry. The station is 8 km from town and the round trip on the train takes about 1 h 50 min.
Can I do a Beagle Channel boat trip on my own?
Yes. Operators sell tickets at the Tourist Pier next to the cruise pier. Trips take 2.5–4 hours and cost AR$85,000–125,200 plus a port fee in 2026. Take a morning departure.
What can I do in Ushuaia in one day from a cruise ship?
A morning Beagle Channel boat trip, lunch, then the Maritime Museum and Avenida San Martín. On a longer call, swap the museum for the national park or the train.
Can I see penguins from Ushuaia on a cruise day?
Catamaran trips view penguins from the boat. Walking among penguins on Isla Martillo takes about 4.5 hours with a road transfer, so it only fits a long call.
Is Ushuaia safe?
Yes. Take care with cold, wind and slippery ramps and trails rather than crime.
