Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships berth at Macquarie Wharf No. 2/3 (or No. 4/5) on the edge of Hobart's waterfront; you walk about 400 m to the MAC 02 terminal and the CBD is within 800 m, so no transport is needed. Salamanca Place is about 15 minutes on foot. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, and from kunanyi/Mt Wellington take the 14:00 bus down at the latest on a 17:30 all-aboard.

Hobart is one of the easiest cruise calls in Australia: the ship ties up beside the old docks and the whole waterfront, from Constitution Dock to Salamanca Place and Battery Point, is a short flat walk. The two big outings are MONA, the private art museum reached by a 30-minute ferry up the Derwent, and the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington, 1,270 m above the city. On Saturdays the Salamanca Market fills the waterfront. Port Arthur is a 90-minute drive each way and is best left to a tour. Weather on the mountain can be far colder than at sea level, even in summer.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • MAC 02 cruise terminal (Macquarie Wharf No. 2/3) · 0.8 km to the centre

On Hunter Street. Passengers walk about 400 m from the ship to the terminal, which has visitor information, free wifi, toilets, a Hobart Artists Market stall area and border processing space. A taxi rank is directly outside the forecourt. Two ships up to 349 m can berth at once; the second uses the multi-user berth at Macquarie Wharf No. 4/5. Franklin Wharf between Hunter Street and the Constitution Dock bridge is closed to through traffic on cruise days.

Can you walk? Yes, about 15 min. Walk about 400 m along the wharf to MAC 02, then along the flat waterfront past Constitution Dock and Brooke Street Pier to Salamanca Place. Battery Point is up Kelly's Steps from Salamanca. The CBD and Elizabeth Street Mall are a few blocks inland.

Getting to town

On foot

FreeAbout 15 min to Salamanca Place

Follow the waterfront from Hunter Street past Constitution Dock and Brooke Street Pier. The Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre is on Elizabeth Street, a few minutes from the dock.

MONA ferry

From A$32 (2026); a return costs the same as one way; museum entry is separateAbout 30 min each way

Leaves from Brooke Street Pier, about 5–10 minutes' walk from MAC 02. The first ferry back from MONA is at 09:45 and the last at 17:00 (from 3 December 2026 to 29 March 2027: 10:00 and 17:30). Book a return that gets you back well before all-aboard.

kunanyi/Mt Wellington Explorer Bus

One way from A$35 (2026); return and all-day passes also soldAbout 50 min each way

Departs Brooke Street Pier or opposite the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre (4 Elizabeth Street). Summer (October–April) departures up: 09:30, 11:00, 12:30, 14:00 and 15:30; down from the summit: 11:00, 12:30, 14:00, 15:30 and 17:00. Times change on snow days.

Metro Tasmania buses

Fare-free on all Metro services until 30 June 2027 (2026)Varies

Metro says no fares are required statewide and riders should not tap a GreenCard. The scheme is presented as a measure for Tasmanians. Metro buses run to Fern Tree, the base of the kunanyi walking tracks, from Franklin Square.

Taxi

MeteredRank outside MAC 02

An overflow rank is outside the Port Tower. Useful for the Cascade Brewery in South Hobart or if the weather turns.

When to head back

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard (16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard). From kunanyi/Mt Wellington, take the 14:00 Explorer Bus down at the latest; from MONA, take a ferry that reaches Brooke Street Pier at least 70 minutes before all-aboard.

The 15:30 bus from the summit reaches the city at about 16:20, which leaves too little margin once you add the walk to the wharf. MONA's later ferries are timed for museum closing, not for ships.

If you are running late: Taxis wait at the MAC 02 rank and can be called to MONA or the mountain. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Coming down from kunanyi/Mt Wellington on the 15:30 bus, which reaches town too close to all-aboard.

Hobart is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Hobart's waterfront, Salamanca, Battery Point and the museum are all on foot, and both MONA and the mountain are easy on public services with a little timetable care. Ship tours earn their price for Port Arthur, 90 minutes away by road and worth at least half a day, and for Bruny Island or the Tasman Peninsula wildlife cruise, where a late return would be a real risk. A ship's MONA package mostly saves you booking the ferry and entry yourself.

Common mistakes

  • Going up kunanyi/Mt Wellington in a T-shirt.

Take a warm, windproof layer. The summit is 1,270 m up and far colder than the waterfront.

  • Catching the 15:30 bus down from the summit on a 17:30 all-aboard.

Take the 14:00 at the latest; the 15:30 reaches town at about 16:20.

  • Turning up at Brooke Street Pier expecting a seat on the MONA ferry.

Book ferry and entry online before the cruise; ferry and museum tickets are separate.

  • Trying to drive to Port Arthur and back on a short call.

It is 90 minutes each way and needs half a day on site. Book a tour or stay in Hobart.

  • Expecting the Salamanca Market every day.

It runs on Saturdays only (08:30–15:00). Salamanca Place's shops and cafés open daily.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Hobart is a safe, small city and the waterfront is busy and well lit. The main risks are natural: rapidly changing weather and cold on kunanyi/Mt Wellington, steep tracks if you walk down from the summit, and strong sun even on cool days. Stay on marked tracks, carry water and a warm layer, and check the forecast before going up. Use the normal care with bags in crowds at the Saturday market. Emergency number: 000.
Accessibility
The waterfront from Macquarie Wharf to Salamanca Place is flat, though passengers walk about 400 m from the ship to the terminal. TMAG has level access to all public areas, lifts and loan wheelchairs (book on 03 6165 7000). The kunanyi/Mt Wellington Explorer Bus is wheelchair accessible. Kelly's Steps and Battery Point are steep; reach Battery Point by taxi instead. The visitor centre on Elizabeth Street offers a Hobart CBD mobility map.
If it rains
Hobart has good indoor options close to the ship: TMAG (free), MONA, which is almost all underground, and the galleries and cafés in Salamanca Place's warehouses. Skip the mountain in low cloud, as the summit view disappears and the road can close in snow.
Crowds
Two ships can berth at once, and the Explorer Bus and MONA ferry fill quickly on those days, so book both before the cruise. Salamanca Market is busiest late morning on Saturdays; go early. TMAG and Battery Point stay quiet even on busy days.
