Quick answer: Most ships berth at Aotea Quay inside CentrePort, about 1.5 km north of the city centre, and passengers ride the cruise shuttle to Wakefield Street, opposite the Amora Hotel, in about 10–15 minutes. Taxis cannot pick up or drop off at the wharf, so the shuttle is your way back too. Be at the Wakefield Street stop 90 minutes before all-aboard so you are on board an hour before.
Wellington is a compact, walkable capital wrapped around a harbour, with most of what a cruise visitor wants within 20 minutes' walk of the shuttle stop: Te Papa, the waterfront, the cable car up to the Botanic Garden, and the cafés and bars of Cuba Street. The catch is that the main cruise berth sits in the working port, so you depend on the shuttle in both directions. Ships usually stay about eight hours. The weather changes fast and the wind is strong, so bring a layer even on a sunny morning.

Aotea Quay (CentrePort) · 1.5 km to the centre
Main berth for large ships, inside the working port with no public access. The cruise zone has toilets, a gift shop, a convenience store, shelter, an information centre, free Wi-Fi and seating, with city ambassadors on hand. Passengers leave by the cruise shuttle or a tour coach; taxis cannot collect or drop off at the wharf.
Queens Wharf · 0.3 km to the centre
Downtown waterfront berth used by smaller ships. From here you walk straight onto the waterfront and into the city centre. Your ship will tell you which berth it uses.
Can you walk? Partly. From Aotea Quay you take the cruise shuttle; ask your ship on the day whether any walking route is open. From the Wakefield Street shuttle stop, or from Queens Wharf, the city centre is flat and compact: Te Papa, the waterfront and Lambton Quay are all a short walk.

Ships at Queens Wharf: walk back and be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard.

On your own or a ship excursion?
Wellington's centre is easy to do alone from the shuttle stop: cable car, Botanic Garden, Te Papa and the waterfront need no guide. A tour earns its place for things further out: Wētā Workshop in Miramar, Mount Victoria lookout if you do not want the climb, and seal-colony trips on the south coast. Tours that leave from the ship also bring you back to it, which removes the shuttle question. Popular independent tours sell out, so book before you arrive.

Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Wellington is a safe city for visitors. Normal precautions apply in busy areas and at night. The main practical risks are the wind on exposed waterfront and hilltop paths, sudden weather changes, and the need to get back to the shuttle stop on time. City ambassadors in black and yellow work on ship days and can give directions and a cruise map. Emergency number: 111.
- Accessibility
- The city centre and waterfront are flat. The cable car is a short ride but the Botanic Garden and Mount Victoria are steep. Check with your ship about wheelchair access on the cruise shuttle. At Queens Wharf the walk into town is level.
- If it rains
- Te Papa can fill a wet morning on its own, and its ticket is valid for 48 hours. Add the Cable Car Museum at the top of the cable car, and cafés on Cuba Street. Skip Mount Victoria and the Botanic Garden in strong wind or heavy rain.
- Crowds
- Ships carry up to about 4,900 passengers, and cable car visitor numbers double on ship days. Go to the cable car first thing, before Te Papa opens at 10:00, then do Te Papa while the queue for the cable car peaks. Book a Te Papa time slot online. Leave for the shuttle stop early: everyone heads back at the same time.
