Quick answer: Most ships anchor off St Peter Port and tender passengers to the cruise pontoon at Albert Pier, a 15–20 minute ride; only small ships up to about 130 m come alongside. The town centre is about 600 m from the landing, so you walk everywhere in town, and buses cost £1.70 by card (2026). Be back at the Albert Pier tender queue 90 minutes before all-aboard.
St Peter Port is a compact harbour town climbing a steep hill, and almost everything a cruise passenger needs is a short walk from the tender landing. The day turns on three things. Tenders are the only way ashore for most ships, so swell can delay or cancel the call, and the queue back builds late in the day. Castle Cornet, the harbour fort that is usually the first stop, is closed from 7 September 2026 until early June 2027 while its bridge is replaced. And Victor Hugo's house is shown only on booked guided tours. Plan around those and the town, the museum in Candie Gardens and the cliff path to Fermain Bay fill a day well.

Albert Pier cruise tender pontoon · 0.6 km to the centre
Main landing point for tenders. The harbour has free Wi-Fi, and the Last Stop Shop on the pier sells local gifts and drinks before you go back to the ship. The Visitor Information Centre is in Market Square in the town centre.
Berth 1 (small ships only)
Alongside berth inside the harbour for ships up to about 130 m with bow and stern thrusters. Passengers walk off by a ramp, with no tender.
Can you walk? Yes, about 10 min. The town centre is about 600 m from the Albert Pier pontoon, along the flat waterfront. Beyond the seafront the town is steep: the walk up to Hauteville House is hard for anyone with limited mobility.
Tender: Larger ships anchor offshore and tender to the dedicated cruise pontoon at Albert Pier, about 600 m from the town centre. Transfers take about 15–20 minutes. The harbour's tidal range is about 9 m. Ships of up to about 130 m that meet the berth criteria can use Berth 1 and let passengers walk off; this is for small ships of up to roughly 200 passengers. In the past, Princess and MSC stopped calling after tender waits and congestion at Albert Pier when several large ships were in on the same day. If the sea is too rough for tenders, the ship may not stop at all.
Getting to town
On foot
FreeUnder 10 min to the town centre
Walk along the waterfront from Albert Pier. Castle Cornet is about 15 minutes round the harbour from the tender pier when it reopens. Fermain Bay is about 1.5 miles south by the cliff path, under an hour.

£1.70 single by card (from 30 March 2026); 2-day visitor pass £15 (2026)Depends on route
Pay by contactless card on board; buses do not take cash, and American Express is not accepted. Cash can top up a puffinpass card at the Town Terminus shop. Route 71 serves the Little Chapel; routes 91 to 95 serve Fermain Bay.
When to head back
Be in the tender queue at Albert Pier 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Leave-by times, measured before all-aboard: St Peter Port town centre 100 minutes, Fermain Bay 150 minutes. When Castle Cornet reopens in June 2027, leave it 105 minutes before all-aboard. Tender waits at Albert Pier have been a known problem, worst when more than one large ship is tendering.
If you are running late: Go straight to Albert Pier and tell the tender staff your ship. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once. For an emergency dial 999 or 112.
Where people go wrong: Planning the day around Castle Cornet, which is closed from 7 September 2026 until early June 2027.

On your own or a ship excursion?
You do not need a ship tour for St Peter Port: the town, the museum and Hauteville House are all within walking distance of the tender pier. A ship tour is worth it if you want to see the island's west and south coasts in a short call, because it gets you back to the tender queue on time. Island Rib Voyages runs trips to Herm and Sark, but spaces are limited; book ahead and only on a long call.

Planning the day around Castle Cornet and the Noonday Gun.
The castle is closed from 7 September 2026 until early June 2027. Use the Candie museum and Hauteville House instead.
Turning up at Hauteville House without a booking, or on a Wednesday.

Trying to pay the bus fare in cash.
Buses take contactless cards only, and not American Express. The fare is £1.70 by card (2026).

Be at Albert Pier 90 minutes before. Tender waits have been a known problem here, especially when two big ships are tendering.
Assuming no paperwork is needed because Guernsey is near the UK.
Since 23 April 2026, non-visa nationals arriving from outside the Common Travel Area need an ETA (£16). British and Irish citizens are exempt. Ask your line how this applies to your ship.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- St Peter Port is a small, quiet town. The main risks are physical: steep streets and steps up from the harbour, uneven and slippery paths at the Little Chapel and on the cliff path, and a large tidal range that can cut off rocks and beaches. Check the tide before going down to the shore. On tender days, follow the crew's instructions on the pontoon. For an emergency dial 999 or 112; the Guernsey Police non-emergency line is 01481 725111. Emergency number: 999 or 112.
- Accessibility
- Guernsey is hard for wheelchair users on a tender day. One passenger account says wheelchairs were not allowed on that line's tenders and passengers had to manage three or four steps unaided; ask your ship before the call. Small ships at Berth 1 use a ramp, which is easier. The seafront is flat, but the town climbs steeply behind it. Hauteville House has stairs on five levels, and Castle Cornet has no wheelchair access beyond the shop. The Guernsey Museum and Castle Cornet have AccessAble guides.
- If it rains
- Spend the day indoors in town: the Guernsey Museum at Candie, with its café, and a booked tour of Hauteville House. Skip the cliff path in heavy rain, as the paths get slippery. Be ready for the call to be cancelled if the sea is too rough for tenders.
- Crowds
- About 51 cruise calls were scheduled for 2026. When two large ships tender on the same day, Albert Pier gets congested and waits grow. Book Hauteville House early, as tours take only 10 people, and go to the museum at its 10:00 opening.
