Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerVigo is a docking port: ships berth at the Muelle de Trasatlánticos in the city centre, and the old town (Casco Vello) is about 200 yards away across a footbridge, a 5–10 minute walk with a gentle climb. You need no transport for the town. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if you have been to Santiago, Baiona or the Cíes Islands.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeVigo's cruise quay sits right at its centre. The old town climbs the hill behind the terminal, with oyster stalls on Rúa Pescadería and the Castro fortress park above. The ferry terminal for the Cíes Islands is next door, but from Easter and from 15 May to 15 September you need a free Xunta de Galicia authorisation before you can buy a ticket, and places are capped. Santiago de Compostela is under an hour away by train, which makes it a realistic but tight trip on a long call.
Walkable? Yes · about 10 min (0.2 km)
The terminal's front door faces the old town, about 200 yards away across a footbridge. The walk takes 5–10 minutes with a gradual uphill section. To avoid the climb, go through A Laxe shopping centre and use its lift to the upper level. The main shopping street, Rúa do Príncipe, is about five minutes away.

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from the city. From Santiago, Baiona or the Cíes Islands, be back at the port 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Out-of-town trips depend on fixed train, bus and ferry times, and ferries can change or be cancelled for weather or demand. Choose a return train or ferry that lands you in Vigo with at least 90 minutes to spare, not the last one before all-aboard.
If you're running late
If a train or ferry is cancelled, take a taxi straight to the cruise terminal from the station or ferry terminal. If you will miss all-aboard, phone the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

Skip the ship tour for Vigo itself: the old town, the oyster street and the Castro park are all on foot from the gangway. Santiago is the case where a ship tour can be worth it. You can do it by train in under an hour each way, but you spend about two hours travelling and need to walk to and from the station, so on a short call the ship's coach removes the timing risk. For the Cíes Islands, the ship tour is worth it if you cannot get a Xunta authorisation for your date, because without one you cannot buy a ferry ticket in season.
Turning up at the Cíes ferry in summer without a Xunta authorisation.
Instead: Apply online at autorizacionillasatlanticas.xunta.gal for your date first; you need its code to buy a ferry ticket. Daily places are capped.
Taking the last train back from Santiago.
Instead: Pick a train that gets you to Vigo-Urzáiz at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, and allow 15 minutes to walk to the port.
Assuming Baiona is a quick 20-minute bus hop.
Instead: Some services take over an hour. Check the timetable on bus.gal and plan around the slower times.
Expecting a flat walk into the old town.
Instead: Wear shoes with grip for the cobbled, uphill lanes, or use the A Laxe lift.
Planning a Cíes trip on an off-season call.
Instead: Outside Easter and 15 May–15 September, visits run only in guided groups, so book a group trip or choose another excursion.
Vigo is an ordinary working city and a straightforward port day. The main hazards are slips on wet, steep cobbles in the old town and on the Castro paths, and the cold Atlantic water at the beaches. Atlantic weather changes fast, so carry a light jacket. On the Cíes Islands stay on the marked routes; walking is restricted to them inside the national park.
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
On multi-ship days the Muelle de Comercio is used as well as the main quay, and several thousand passengers arrive in a compact centre. The terminal exit and the old town fill first. Go up to Monte O Castro early, then come down to the old town after the tour groups have moved on. Cíes places are capped daily, so apply for your authorisation as early as you can.
Accessibility
The terminal has boarding bridges and opens onto a footbridge towards the old town. The old town itself is cobbled and uphill, which is hard going in a wheelchair. A Laxe shopping centre on the dock has a lift to the upper level, which avoids the first climb. Rúa do Príncipe is flat and pedestrianised. Monte O Castro involves a steep approach; a taxi to the top is the easier option. Ask your ferry operator about step-free boarding before planning a Cíes trip.
If it rains
Atlantic weather changes quickly here. On a wet day, skip the Cíes Islands and Monte O Castro. Spend the morning in the covered A Laxe centre and the shops of Rúa do Príncipe, then a long seafood lunch in the old town. Santiago de Compostela, with its cathedral and museum, is a good indoor option by train if your call is long enough.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
