Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Ships berth alongside at the East Dock in Santa Cruz de La Palma, and the old town is a flat 10–15 minute walk along a marked blue line and the Avenida Marítima. No shuttle is needed for the town. Start back from the old town 75 minutes before all-aboard; for island drives such as La Cumbrecita, leave 2 h 30 min before.

Santa Cruz de La Palma is the island's capital and a compact colonial port town, founded in 1493 and once one of the busiest ports between Europe and the Americas. The ship ties up beside the town, so the carved wooden balconies on the Avenida Marítima, Plaza de España and the replica ship that houses the Naval Museum are all within walking distance. The rest of the island is mountainous: the observatory at Roque de los Muchachos is about 90 minutes each way by road, and the 2021 volcano can only be visited with a tour company. The port expected 220 calls between October 2026 and August 2027, with December and January the busiest months.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • East Dock (Muelle Este) and Maritime Station

The East Dock is the main cruise berth; the Multipurpose Dock is used when two or three cruise ships are in at once. Pedestrians leave through the Maritime Station entrance facing the marina, following a blue line on the ground from the ships to the city. Returning passengers pass security screening in the Maritime Station. Taxis wait in a marked lane on the East Dock. Shuttles, where a cruise line hires them, run between the ship and a meeting point in front of the marina.

Can you walk? Yes, about 15 min. Follow the blue line out through the Maritime Station towards the marina, then walk along the Avenida Marítima into the old town, about 10–15 minutes on the flat. The town beach is 10–15 minutes along the Avenida Marítima. Some old-town streets have slight slopes and uneven paving.

Getting to town

On foot

Free10–15 min to the old town

Follow the blue line from the ship through the Maritime Station, then the Avenida Marítima past the balconies to Plaza de España and Calle Real (Calle O'Daly).

Bus (TILP line 500)

Check the fare with the driver (2026)Short ride to Los Cancajos

Line 500 towards the airport leaves very frequently from stops just outside the port and serves Los Cancajos beach. The island bus operator is TILP.

Taxi

Ask for an estimate before you ride (2026)About 15 min to Los Cancajos; about 40 min to Los Tilos

Taxis wait in a marked lane on the East Dock. Agree the plan and the return time before a long drive.

Ship tour or private driver

Varies; check your cruise planner (2026)About 1 hour to La Cumbrecita; about 90 min to Roque de los Muchachos

Mountain roads are winding and slow. La Cumbrecita needs a reserved parking slot for visits between 08:00 and 16:00, booked through the national park website, and the 2021 volcano can only be visited with a tour company.

When to head back

Start back from the old town or the town beach 75 minutes before all-aboard, from Los Cancajos 90 minutes before, from Los Tilos or Charco Azul 2 h 10 min before, from La Cumbrecita 2 h 30 min before and from Roque de los Muchachos 3 hours before.

The walk from town is short and flat, but you must pass security in the Maritime Station before reboarding. Island roads are mountainous, with long drive times and few alternatives if there is a delay. Aim to be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard.

If you are running late: From the old town, walk or take a taxi to the Maritime Station. If you are out on the island and running late, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Underestimating mountain drive times, or planning an independent visit to the 2021 volcano, which needs a booked tour.

Santa Cruz de La Palma is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Do the town yourself: it is a short walk from the ship and small enough to see in a morning. Book a ship tour or a licensed operator for the 2021 volcano, which cannot be visited independently, and for Roque de los Muchachos, which is about 90 minutes each way on mountain roads. The ship's tour is also the safer choice for La Caldera de Taburiente if you have not booked a Cumbrecita parking slot.

Common mistakes

  • Planning to visit the 2021 volcano on your own.

Visits are only allowed with a tour company. Book in advance or take the ship's tour.

  • Driving to La Cumbrecita without a parking reservation.

Between 08:00 and 16:00 cars need a reserved slot, booked through the national park website.

  • Underestimating drive times to the mountains.

Roque de los Muchachos is about 90 minutes each way on a winding road; allow 3 hours before all-aboard for the return.

  • Leaving the Naval Museum for a Sunday.

It is listed as open Monday to Saturday only.

  • Going inland in beach clothes.

Temperatures drop quickly with altitude; take a layer for the Caldera or the observatory.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Santa Cruz de La Palma is a small, quiet town and generally safe. The main risks are on the island rather than in town: winding mountain roads, sudden weather changes at altitude and the restricted volcano area, which must only be visited with a tour company. Follow the marked lines in the port and the Port Police's instructions. Emergency number: 112.
Accessibility
Ships berth alongside and the route from the Maritime Station along the Avenida Marítima into town is flat. The port has spaces for vehicles for people with reduced mobility on the East Dock. Some old-town streets have slight slopes and uneven paving. The Naval Museum's site gives no accessibility details, so ask at the door.
If it rains
Stay in town: the Naval Museum, the Museo Insular and the churches with their Flemish art, then the market and a long lunch. Mountain roads and viewpoints are poor in cloud and rain.
Crowds
The port expected 220 calls between October 2026 and August 2027, with 48 in December and 33 in January. When two or three ships are in, the Multipurpose Dock is also used and the old town fills up mid-morning. See the balconies and Plaza de España early and visit the museum at opening.
