Transport: Port of Puerto del Rosario to Puerto del Rosario town centre

Puerto del Rosario is a working capital rather than a resort, and most passengers leave it straight away for the beaches. The town is worth an hour or two: a seafront promenade with more than 100 street sculptures, the house where Miguel de Unamuno lived in exile, and a small sheltered beach. The big draw is the Corralejo Natural Park in the north, a sweep of dunes about 10 km long that runs down to the sea. Wind and sun are the constant factors here. The other is the bus timetable, so check it before you set out.

Walkable? Partly

The town centre, promenade and Playa Chica are a short walk from the ship; the compact centre lies between the port and Avenida de la Constitución, where the bus station is. Playa Blanca, Caleta de Fuste, Corralejo, La Oliva and Betancuria need a bus, taxi or tour.

Where your ship docks

  • Puerto del Rosario cruise terminal (cruise pier) — New terminal building opened on 21 May 2025 on the cruise pier, run by Global Ports Holding's Canary Islands arm. The town centre surrounds the port and the terminal is a few metres from the seafront road; the promenade and the Casa Museo Unamuno are just beyond the port gates.

On foot

Walk out of the port onto the seafront road and promenade. The sculptures, the church and the Unamuno house are close together in the small centre.

Tiadhe bus line 06 to Corralejo

€3.40 one way, cash (2026)About 30–40 min

Tiadhe is the island's public bus operator. Line 06 starts from the Puerto del Rosario bus station on Avenida de la Constitución, at the inland side of the centre. The official timetable shows departures every hour from 06:00 to 23:00 Monday to Saturday, with extra departures in most daytime hours; Sundays and holidays are roughly hourly. Return buses leave the Corralejo harbour (Muelle) 10 minutes before the times printed for Corralejo; the last one from the harbour is at 20:50. Pay the driver; notes above €50, or more than five times the fare, are not accepted.

Tiadhe bus line 03 to Playa Blanca and Caleta de Fuste

€1.45 to Caleta de Fuste, cash (2026)Check the timetable

Line 03 runs from the Puerto del Rosario bus station via Las Rotondas shopping centre, Playa Blanca and the airport to Caleta de Fuste and Las Salinas, every day. The return calls at the same stops. Check departure times on the official line 03 timetable.

Taxi

Agree or ask the fare before setting offAbout 23 min to the Corralejo dunes

Taxis wait near the port exit. Taxis only pick up within their own municipal zone, so a passing taxi elsewhere may not stop for you. Use a rank.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From Corralejo by bus, leave 2.5 hours before all-aboard; by taxi, leave 90 minutes before. From Caleta de Fuste or Playa Blanca, leave 90 minutes before.

Buses run to a printed timetable, and on Sundays and holidays line 06 is roughly hourly, so a missed bus can cost an hour. Line 06 drops you at the bus station on Avenida de la Constitución, not at the pier, so allow time to walk back through the centre. Note your bus back before you leave Puerto del Rosario, and aim for the one before the last that works.

If you're running late

If the bus does not come, take a taxi from the Corralejo rank. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

The town needs no tour, and Corralejo is easy on your own if you check the bus times. A ship's transfer to the dunes or Corralejo town is worth it if you would rather not rely on the bus timetable, especially on a Sunday, a holiday or a short call. For Betancuria, the interior villages, La Oliva or a catamaran trip, a tour is the practical choice: there is no simple bus loop and taxis only pick up in their own zones.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Puerto del Rosario

Going to Corralejo without checking the bus timetable.

Instead: Open the line 06 timetable on tiadhe.com before the call, note the return times, and plan around the bus that leaves Corralejo 2.5 hours before all-aboard. On Sundays and holidays buses are roughly hourly.

Waiting for line 06 at the pier.

Instead: Island buses leave from the bus station on Avenida de la Constitución, on the far side of the centre. Allow time to walk there and back.

Planning the Casa Museo Unamuno on a weekend.

Instead: It opens Monday to Friday, 08:00–14:00. On a weekend, walk the sculpture trail instead.

Paying the bus with a large note.

Instead: Drivers do not accept notes above €50 or more than five times the fare. Carry coins and small notes for the €3.40 fare.

Expecting to hail any passing taxi.

Instead: Taxis only pick up in their own zone. Go to a rank, in Corralejo town for the return.

Underestimating sun and wind on the dunes.

Instead: Take water, a hat and sun cream. Wind-blown sand is hard on cameras and eyes.

Safety: is Puerto del Rosario safe for cruise passengers?

Puerto del Rosario and Corralejo are low-risk for visitors; take normal care with bags in crowded places. The main hazards are the sun, the wind and the sea. The dunes have no shade, and some beaches have strong currents or surf, so follow the posted warnings and flags. Stay on marked paths in the natural park and do not disturb plants or wildlife. Carry your passport or ID: shops may ask for photo ID when you pay by card.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Unofficial tour sellers near the port: book through the ship, the tourist office or an operator you have checked.

Practical information

Crowds

Cruise calls peak in winter, and passenger numbers rose sharply in 2025. The first buses and taxis after the ships arrive are the busiest, as is the ship's dunes transfer. Head out early, or see the town first and travel to Corralejo once the first wave has gone. The dunes are large enough to find space if you walk a few minutes away from the road.

Accessibility

The walk from the port into the town centre is short. Expect uneven pavements, kerbs and sand in places. Confirm step-free gangway arrangements with your cruise line. Ship's coaches for some tours board by steps, though folding wheelchairs are usually taken. The dunes and most beaches are soft sand without boardwalks. Book an accessible taxi or private tour in advance if needed.

If it rains

Rain is rare but more likely in October, November and February. Stay in Puerto del Rosario: the Unamuno house (weekdays), the church, cafés and the Las Rotondas shopping centre, which line 03 serves. Strong wind is far more common than rain; on a very windy day pick a sheltered beach such as Playa Chica over the open dunes.
