Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock at the Port of Bilbao cruise terminal in Getxo, about 15 km from central Bilbao, so you cannot walk to the city. The cheapest route is a 20–25 minute walk to Gobela or Neguri metro station and Line 1 to Moyúa, about 20 minutes; taxis wait at the terminal. By metro, leave central Bilbao 2 hours before all-aboard.

Open my full Bilbao day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Bilbao? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeBilbao's cruise terminal is not in Bilbao at all but in Getxo, a seaside suburb at the mouth of the estuary. That works in your favour if you want a quiet day: Ereaga beach, the old fishing port of Algorta and the Vizcaya Bridge are all close. Most passengers head into the city for the Guggenheim Museum and the pintxo bars of the Casco Viejo. The metro is cheap and frequent, but the stations are a walk from the pier, and that walk is the part people forget to allow for on the way back.
Walkable? No (15 km)
Central Bilbao is about 15 km away. Getxo itself is walkable: Ereaga beach and the old port of Algorta are close, and Gobela and Neguri metro stations are a 20–25 minute walk.

Bilbao itself is easy on your own: the metro is cheap, frequent and simple, and the Guggenheim and Casco Viejo are close together. Take the ship's shuttle if walking 1–1.5 km to the metro is hard for you. For San Sebastián (about 110 km) or Guernica, a ship's tour is the sensible choice: the distances are long and the tour carries the risk of a late return.
Thinking the ship docks in Bilbao.
Instead: The terminal is in Getxo, about 15 km from the city. Plan for the metro, a taxi or the ship's shuttle.
Forgetting the walk from the metro to the pier.
Instead: Neguri and Gobela stations are 1–1.5 km from the terminal. Allow 20–25 minutes on foot and leave central Bilbao 2 hours before all-aboard.
Planning the Guggenheim on a Monday.
Instead: It is closed on most Mondays outside mid-June to early September. Check the museum's calendar for your date.
Buying Guggenheim tickets from resellers.
Instead: Buy on the museum's own website, which warns about ticket fraud.
Getting on a metro in the wrong direction on the way back.
Instead: Back to the ship, take Line 1 towards Plentzia and get off at Neguri or Gobela.
Bilbao and Getxo are generally safe. Pickpockets work in busy places such as the markets, metro stations and the Casco Viejo, so keep bags closed and phones out of back pockets. The weather changes quickly on this coast; carry a light rain layer. Swim only on lifeguarded beaches and follow the flags.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
The first shuttles and taxis after the ship arrives are the busiest; walking to the metro avoids the queue. Book Guggenheim tickets online on the museum's site before the call, especially in the cruise season. Pintxo bars are busiest at lunchtime, so eat early.
Accessibility
The terminal has a gangway to the ship like an airport jet bridge. The walk to Neguri or Gobela metro is 1–1.5 km, so passengers with limited mobility should use a taxi or the ship's shuttle. Metro Bilbao Line 1 is a modern line; check lifts at your stations before you travel. The Casco Viejo has some slopes and uneven paving. Check access details for each sight on its own website.
If it rains
Bilbao gets plenty of rain, and the city copes well. The Guggenheim (closed on most Mondays) and the covered Mercado de la Ribera fill a wet morning, and the Casco Viejo's pintxo bars fill the rest. Getxo's sights are mostly outdoors, so on a wet day head into the city.
