Why ChatGPT Gets Cruise Port Days Wrong (And What Works Better)

Quick Answer

In Cruise Critic's test, ChatGPT suggested venues that were closed during port hours, assumed a car, missed a local closure and built a timetable with no room for delays. Use it for ideas. Then check terminals, transport, opening times and the return leg against port-specific sources before you go ashore.

Why ChatGPT Gets Cruise Port Days Wrong (And What Works Better)

ChatGPT is fast and free, and it sounds sure of itself. Cruise Critic's Chris Gray Faust used it to plan the port days of a British Isles cruise and wrote up what happened. Some of it worked. Several things did not, and each failure matters more on a cruise than on a city break.

Quick answer: In Cruise Critic's test, ChatGPT suggested venues that were closed during port hours, assumed a car, missed a local closure and built a timetable with no room for delays. Use it for ideas. Then check terminals, transport, opening times and the return leg against port-specific sources before you go ashore.

What Cruise Critic found

The test is described in Cruise Critic's article on planning shore excursions with ChatGPT. The cruise was the first week of a "Wild British Isles" itinerary on Holland America's Nieuw Statendam, with calls including Edinburgh, Lerwick, Kirkwall, Stornoway and Belfast.

Venues that were not open

ChatGPT recommended whisky tasting rooms in Edinburgh. When the author checked their websites, none were open during the dates and times of the visit, and none served whisky. One suggestion, a Scotch Malt Whisky Society bar, did work.

It assumed a car

Its suggestions assumed travellers had a car or a private driver. On Shetland, the taxi to one site cost almost as much as the ticket. Cruise passengers usually rely on walking, local buses, trains or taxis.

A timetable with no slack

For Belfast, ChatGPT allowed about an hour at the Giant's Causeway. The author wrote that the timetable "left no room for errors. If we ran into traffic or rain, we'd be out of luck."

Local conditions it missed

It did not mention that the Callanish Stones on Lewis were closed to large vehicles during visitor centre construction. It also did not warn about midges on Lewis until asked.

What it got right

It suggested a Shetland pony experience the author rated as a highlight, and it correctly warned that Maeshowe tickets on Orkney were limited. The author's verdict: treat it as "the start of your research, and not the end result."

Why this matters more on a cruise

A ship has a fixed all-aboard time. If you go ashore on your own, getting back is your job. Port guides say it plainly: ships do not wait for independent passengers, and reaching the next port becomes your problem.

So the gaps above become serious. A closed venue wastes time you cannot get back. A plan that assumes a car can strand you. A timetable with no slack leaves nothing for a cancelled train or a full bus.

What a ship-safe port plan needs

CheckWhy it matters
Correct terminal or tender landingSome ports have several terminals far apart. At Piraeus, the walk to the metro is about 15 minutes from Terminal A and about 30 from Terminals B and C.
Your all-aboard timeEvery leave-by time is worked back from it.
A port-specific leave-by ruleIt differs by port. Rome needs far more margin than a port you can walk out of.
Transport without a carBuses, trains, shuttles and their real frequency.
Opening days and timed ticketsThe Uffizi and the Accademia close on Mondays. Jerónimos in Lisbon closes on Mondays.
Local disruptionRail strikes, wind that stops tenders or cable cars, closures.

Rome as an example

Ships for Rome dock at Civitavecchia, about 70 km from the city. According to the Port of Civitavecchia, a free shuttle runs from the piers to Largo della Pace. From there it is a 15–20 minute walk to Civitavecchia station.

The FL5 regional train costs €4.60 to Roma San Pietro and takes 50–60 minutes, or €5 to Termini in 75–85 minutes (2026). There are two to three trains an hour for most of the day. Paper tickets must be validated before boarding.

The return rule for Rome: be on a train leaving Rome no later than three hours before all-aboard. For an 18:30 all-aboard, that means 15:30 from San Pietro at the latest. That puts you on board about 90 minutes early with one train's worth of slack. On a rail strike day, do not go independently.

None of that comes from a general chatbot by default. You have to ask for it, and then check it.

The options you actually have

Ship excursion. Prices vary by line. The ship waits if its own coach is late. Worth considering on a rail strike day, with mobility limits, or on a short call.

A general AI assistant. Good for ideas and background. Check every operational fact before you rely on it: terminal, transport, opening times, return timing.

A cruise-specific plan. Built around your port, your all-aboard time and the return leg. Still check official sources close to the day, because no tool can see a strike or a closure in advance with certainty.

FAQ

Can ChatGPT plan a cruise port day? It can give you ideas and a rough outline. In Cruise Critic's test it also suggested closed venues, assumed a car and built a timetable with no slack. Treat its output as a draft and verify the details.

Why is ChatGPT unreliable for cruise port timing? Return timing depends on your terminal, your all-aboard time, real transport frequencies and local disruption. Unless you supply all of that and check the result, a fluent answer can still leave out the journey back.

Which ports need the most care? Ports where the return depends on a train or a queue. Rome needs a train three hours before all-aboard. In Santorini, guides advise being at the top cable car station 2.5 hours before all-aboard on busy days, because the queue down can take an hour or more. Mykonos has only a few dozen taxis, so do not count on one.
