Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips berth alongside at the Port of Koper Passenger Terminal, right beside the Old Town, so you walk to Tito Square in about five minutes. Piran is a 45–50 minute Arriva bus ride; Ljubljana, Postojna Cave and the Škocjan Caves are 1–1.5 hours inland and are better done as a tour. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from the Old Town, and catch a bus that gets you back to Koper 90 minutes before all-aboard if you go further.

Where people get it wrong: Attempting Ljubljana or the caves by infrequent public transport and missing the bus back to Koper.
Times count back from all-aboard using the travel times and buffers in this guide. Your ship's daily programme always wins.
Open my full Koper day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Koper? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeKoper is Slovenia's cruise port, and the cruise berth sits at the foot of the old Venetian town. A new passenger terminal building opened in May 2025, beside the Old Town. Koper itself takes two or three hours: Tito Square, the Praetorian Palace, the cathedral and its bell tower, and the lanes down to the Muda Gate. Most passengers use the rest of the day for Piran on the coast, or for Ljubljana or one of the karst caves inland. Only one cruise ship can berth at a time, so the town rarely feels as crowded as larger Adriatic ports.
Walkable? Yes · about 5 min (0.3 km)
The terminal is at the edge of the Old Town. Tito Square (Titov trg) is about 300 m away, a short walk uphill through narrow lanes. Everything in the Old Town is within 10–15 minutes on foot.

Walk from the terminal into the Old Town. The streets are narrow, paved and mostly car-free, with a gentle climb to the main square.
Arriva bus to Piran
Low single fare; check at the stop or the tourist information centreAbout 45–50 min
Arriva Slovenia buses run from the Koper Tržnica (market) stop roughly every 20 minutes, calling at Izola and Portorož on the way. Ask at the terminal or tourist information for the stop. Plan a bus that returns you to Koper at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Bus or train to Ljubljana
Check current fares with Arriva or Slovenske železniceBus about 1 h 30 min; train about 2 h 40 min
Arriva runs about hourly from Koper to Ljubljana bus station. The train is slower and runs only about four times a day. The round trip leaves only a few hours in the capital, so most passengers take a ship or private tour.
Bus or train to Postojna
Check current fares with Arriva or Slovenske železniceBus about 1 h 15 min; train about 1 h 25 min
Direct services are infrequent (buses roughly every four hours, trains about three a day), so independent cave trips are hard to time against all-aboard. A tour or a pre-booked transfer is the safer choice.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard if you stay in Koper. If you go to Piran, be on a bus that reaches Koper 90 minutes before all-aboard. Inland trips should be back in Koper 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Koper's Old Town is next to the ship, so the risk comes from trips out of town. Piran buses run often but take up to 50 minutes and pass through Izola and Portorož traffic. Ljubljana and the caves are over an hour away each way, and public services are infrequent, which is why these are usually done as tours.
If you're running late
If a bus is late, take a taxi back to the port. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once; the Passenger Terminal can be reached on +386 5 6656 100.
Ships berth alongside at the passenger quay in Koper. Some smaller cruise ships anchor off Piran instead of calling at Koper; if your ship does this, check your cruise line's tender arrangements, as this guide covers the Koper berth.

Skip the ship tour for Koper itself: the Old Town starts at the terminal and is easy to see alone. Piran is also straightforward by Arriva bus. The ship's tour earns its price for Ljubljana, Postojna Cave or the Škocjan Caves: each is over an hour away, cave visits run on fixed tour times, and public transport back to Koper is infrequent. If you would rather go independently, a pre-booked private transfer is far safer than the bus or train.
Trying to fit Ljubljana and a cave into one call by public transport.
Instead: Pick one. Use a ship tour or pre-booked transfer for anything inland.
Arriving at Postojna or Škocjan without checking tour times.
Instead: Both caves run fixed guided tours. Book a slot that leaves enough time to get back to Koper.
Taking the last convenient bus back from Piran.
Instead: Aim to be back in Koper 90 minutes before all-aboard; the bus can take 50 minutes.
Wearing summer clothes into the caves.
Instead: Postojna is 10 °C all year. Take a jacket and shoes with grip.
Skipping Koper itself.
Instead: The Old Town needs only an hour or two and starts at the gangway. See it first, then head out.
Koper is a small town and the Old Town is safe to walk alone. Normal care with bags is enough. The main hazards are slippery stone paving in the lanes, steep steps in the bell tower, and wet, uneven paths in the caves. Swim only at the city beach or Žusterna, not from the port quays.
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
The cruise quay takes one ship at a time, so Koper is rarely overwhelmed. August is the busiest month, with 14 ship calls scheduled in 2026. See Tito Square early, before ship tours reach it. For the caves, pre-book a set tour slot rather than turning up.
Accessibility
The terminal is next to the Old Town, but the lanes up to Tito Square are narrow, paved and slightly uphill. The bell tower is stairs only and unsuitable for limited mobility. Postojna Cave starts with a train ride but includes a walking section; the Škocjan Caves involve hundreds of steps and are not suitable for wheelchair users. Ask your cruise line which tours are adapted.
If it rains
Rain does not affect the caves, which are underground. In Koper, use the cathedral, the Regional Museum and the Praetorian Palace, with a long coffee in the Loggia. Skip the bell tower if visibility is poor.
