Beaches Near Dubrovnik Cruise Port: Banje, Lokrum and Lapad Bay

Quick answer: If your ship docks at Gruž, the closest real option is Lapad Bay, about 15 minutes from Pile by Libertas bus (€2.50 on board, 2026) or a short taxi from Gruž. If you want a beach with the Old Town in view, Banje Beach is a 5-minute walk east of Ploče Gate. Lokrum island is 15 minutes by boat from the old harbour, €30 return including entry (2026). For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave Lokrum or Banje by 15:30 and Lapad by 15:45.

Where the cruise ships dock

  • ·Gruž (Port of Dubrovnik): where most ships dock, about 3 km north-west of the Old Town. Libertas city buses stop on the main road outside the port. Shuttles and taxis wait at the terminal.
  • ·Old Town anchorage: under the port's "2+1" arrangement, two ships berth at Gruž and one more may anchor off the Old Town. Its passengers are tendered into the old harbour on the east side of the walls, a ride of a few minutes.

This matters for beaches. From Gruž, Lapad Bay is the nearer swim. If your ship tenders, Banje and the Lokrum boats are both a short walk from where you land.

Getting from Gruž towards the beaches

Libertas bus 1A or 1B runs from outside Gruž port to Pile Gate in 15–20 minutes, roughly every 15–25 minutes in daytime. Pay €2.50 on board, or €1.73 for a one-hour ticket bought in advance at Libertas sales points, Tisak kiosks or in the Libertas app (2026). The driver sells only the single-ride ticket.

Line 8 (Viktorija–Gruž) links Gruž with the Ploče side of town, which is the Banje side. Check the stop timetable before relying on it.

If you plan three or more rides, for example Gruž to Pile, Pile to Lapad and back to Gruž, the 24-hour ticket at €5.31 (2026) pays off. The Dubrovnik Pass also includes unlimited city buses.

Taxis wait at the terminal and take 10–15 minutes, up to 30 in summer traffic. Uber and Bolt operate but cannot enter the pedestrian Old Town; they drop at Pile or Ploče. Check the meter is on or agree the fare first.

Banje Beach

Getting there: walk 5 minutes east from Ploče Gate. Time: 5 minutes from the Old Town. From Gruž, add the bus or taxi into town. Cost: the public area is free. Sunbeds cost extra.

Banje is a pebble beach with a direct view of the city walls. It is the obvious photo, and it fills by late morning in summer. Go early or accept a crowd. It pairs well with the cable car, whose lower station is about 5 minutes' walk from Ploče Gate.

Lokrum (rocks and the "Dead Sea" lake)

Getting there: boat from the old harbour. Time: 15 minutes by boat. Boats leave roughly every 30 minutes in season. Cost: €30 return including reserve entry (2026).

Lokrum is a wooded nature reserve with a botanical garden, peacocks and rocky swimming. There is no sand, so bring water shoes. The sheltered salt lake, known as the "Dead Sea", suits weaker swimmers. Allow 2.5–3 hours for the whole trip.

Note the last boat time posted at the dock and keep your ticket for the return. The island is quieter early in the afternoon, once tours head back.

Lapad Bay

Getting there: Libertas bus from Pile towards Lapad/Babin kuk, or a taxi from Gruž. Time: about 15 minutes from Pile. Cost: €2.50 bus fare on board (2026).

Lapad Bay is easier with children and closer to Gruž than the Old Town beaches. That makes it the lower-risk choice when your ship is berthed at Gruž, because you are not relying on the coast road from Pile at the end of the day.

When to head back

The guide's rule is to leave Pile Gate 1 hour 45 minutes before all-aboard. In summer the coast road to Gruž backs up and full buses pass the Pile stop. Allow for a missed bus, a slow ride and the walk through the port, and you need about 45 minutes. That leaves you on board an hour early.

From Lokrum, leave the island 2 hours before all-aboard: 15 minutes on the boat to the old harbour, then the bus. From Banje, use the same 2 hours, because you still have to cross the Old Town to Pile or get a taxi from Ploče. From Lapad, which is closer to Gruž, the Pile rule is a safe margin.

Lapad Bay15:1515:4516:15

If your ship is anchored and tendering, the guide allows 90 minutes from the old harbour for the tender and its queue. Still leave Lokrum by the times above, because the last boats back fill up.

If you are running late, take a taxi rather than waiting for a bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme. Ships do not wait for independent passengers.

For your own times, plan your day with your own all-aboard time.

Common mistakes

  • ·Leaving the bus back to Gruž to the last moment. Summer buses fill and traffic stalls. Work back from the table above.
  • ·Swimming on Lokrum in flip-flops. The shore is rock. Water shoes make it much easier.
  • ·Missing the last Lokrum boat time. It is posted at the dock. Check it when you arrive.
  • ·Arriving at Banje at midday in July. It is crowded by late morning. Go early or choose Lapad.
  • ·Taking a taxi without checking the fare. Check the meter is on or agree the price before you get in, especially at Pile in the afternoon.
  • ·Buying the single ticket from the driver for every ride. On a three-ride beach day, the 24-hour ticket is cheaper.
