Transport: Port Saint John (Marco Polo and Diamond Jubilee cruise terminals) to Uptown Saint John

Saint John is New Brunswick's port city on the Bay of Fundy, and its cruise berths sit at the foot of uptown. The City Market, the waterfront boardwalk and the shops of Market Square are minutes from the gangway. The day's theme is the Fundy tide: at the Reversing Rapids the river is pushed backwards at high tide, and at Hopewell Rocks the sea floor you walk on at low tide is under water a few hours later. Plan those around the tide table, not the other way round.

Walkable? Yes · about 15 min (0.4 km)

Uptown starts at the terminals. The City Market is about 400 m from the pier and most uptown sights are within 15 minutes on foot. Uptown is built on a hill, so expect a climb from the waterfront. The Reversing Rapids, about 4 km away, are a long walk.

Where your ship docks

  • Marco Polo Cruise Terminal · 0.4 km to the centre — Built 2009, 388 m berth, with elevators, escalators, free wifi and an ATM dispensing Canadian dollars. The AREA 506 Waterfront Container Village is next door.
  • Diamond Jubilee Cruise Terminal · 0.4 km to the centre — Built 2012, with elevators, escalators and free wifi.
  • Long Wharf Terminal · 0.4 km to the centre — Third cruise berth, used when several ships are in; up to three ships can be handled at once.

Hopewell Rocks tour

Ship's tour or private tour; prices vary by group size7–8 hours

Hopewell Rocks is a long trip along the Fundy coast. Independent tours must return you to the terminal at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

From uptown, start back 75 minutes before all-aboard, to be on board 60 minutes before. From the Reversing Rapids on foot, leave two hours before. For Hopewell Rocks, take only a tour that is scheduled back at the terminal at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Uptown is next to the berths, so the town itself carries little risk. Hopewell Rocks is the risk: tours run 7–8 hours, the park visit is tied to the tide, and the return is a long drive with no alternative transport.

If you're running late

If an independent tour is running late, call the port agent number on your ship's daily programme at once. Port Saint John's 24-hour security line is 506 636 5044.

A one-day plan for Saint John (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 at the Marco Polo Cruise Terminal and all-aboard is 17:30, on a weekday in summer.

  1. 08:30 Walk off the ship past the AREA 506 Waterfront Container Village and along the waterfront boardwalk.

  2. 09:00 Walk up to the Saint John City Market on Charlotte Street. Try dulse, the dried Fundy seaweed sold by vendors.

  3. 10:00 Check the tide table, then walk the Harbour Passage towards the Reversing Rapids, or take a taxi.

  4. 11:00 Reversing Rapids: the lookout at 200 Bridge Road (Skywalk opens 11:00) and the water-level viewpoint at 50 Fallsview Avenue.

  5. 12:30 Taxi back to uptown. Lunch, for example seafood at Grannan's Seafood & Grill in Market Square.

  6. 14:00 Browse Market Square, Water Street and King Street.

  7. 16:15 Walk back to the terminal.

  8. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Do Saint John itself on your own: the market, the waterfront and uptown are next to the ship. The Reversing Rapids are easy by taxi or a long waterfront walk. Hopewell Rocks is where the ship's tour earns its price: it takes most of the day, the timing depends on the tide, and the ship waits for its own tours. Private tours are priced per person by group size, so they make most sense for a group.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Saint John

Visiting the Reversing Rapids without checking the tide.

Instead: Look up the Saint John tide table. The effect is strongest near high and low tide; at slack water the gorge looks like a calm river.

Booking an independent Hopewell Rocks tour that returns close to all-aboard.

Instead: Choose one scheduled back at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, or take the ship's tour.

Forgetting the time change.

Instead: Saint John is on Atlantic Time. Check whether the ship's clocks match local time before you plan your return.

Paying in US dollars and expecting US change.

Instead: Many shops near the pier take US dollars but give change in Canadian dollars. Use a card or the ATM at the Marco Polo terminal.

Planning the City Market for a Sunday.

Instead: Guaranteed vendor hours are Monday to Saturday only.

Safety: is Saint John safe for cruise passengers?

Saint John is relatively safe. Use normal city sense in uptown and leave unneeded valuables in your cabin safe. At the Reversing Rapids, stay at the viewpoints; the water in the gorge is dangerous outside the brief slack-tide window. At Hopewell Rocks, the park is closed outside opening hours because the tide rises quickly; follow staff instructions on the sea floor.

Practical information

Crowds

Up to three ships can be in at once. The City Market and the waterfront are busiest just after ships arrive. Go to the market first if it is a quiet day, or head to the Reversing Rapids first and do the market in the afternoon on a busy one. Check the Port Saint John cruise schedule for your date.

Accessibility

The Marco Polo and Diamond Jubilee terminals have large elevators and escalators and tide-adjusting gangways. Uptown is on a hill, so routes up from the waterfront are steep in places. The Reversing Rapids lookout at 200 Bridge Road is reached by road. At Hopewell Rocks, the walk to the sea floor involves about 100 steps. Some ship tours, such as trolley tours, cannot carry mobility devices; check before booking.

If it rains

Spend longer in the City Market and the indoor shops of Market Square, and eat uptown. The Skywalk at the Reversing Rapids is partly indoors, with a theatre and tide display. Skip the Harbour Passage walk in heavy rain and take a taxi instead.
