Quick answer: St. John's is a docking port, and downtown starts across Harbour Drive from the ship. You can walk to Water Street in a few minutes for free. Signal Hill is about a 10-minute ride, and Cape Spear needs a taxi or tour. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, and allow 135 minutes from Cape Spear.
St. John's is the opposite of most big ports: the ship ties up beside the main road and there is no terminal to cross. The day is decided by weather and hills. Fog can hide Signal Hill and Cape Spear, wind can cancel the call at the narrow harbour entrance, and the streets climb steeply away from the water. The season is small, with 39 visits scheduled from May to October 2026, so most days feel quiet unless a large ship is in.

Plan this day to my shipWhere the ship docks
Piers 10 and 11, Harbour Drive · 0.5 km to the centre
Main cruise berth, on the west side of the harbour and parallel to Harbour Drive. No terminal building. The centre of town is across the road, and Harbourside Park is about 500 m from the ship.
Pier 17
Used by the smaller ship when two are in port, on the north side of the harbour. Some ships run a shuttle to town, although the distance is not great.
Can you walk? Yes, about 5 min. Harbour Drive, Water Street and Duckworth Street run fairly level along the harbour, and most shops and restaurants are on them. The cross streets are moderate to very steep. Signal Hill is a long climb and suits fit walkers only.

Cross Harbour Drive and go up one block. Bring comfortable shoes for the hills.
Taxi to Signal Hill

All city taxis are licensed and inspected, and they run 24 hours. The City advises phoning for one, so do not expect a rank at the pier.
Taxi to Cape Spear

Cape Spear is about 20 km out. Follow Water Street west and then Route 11 for 15 km to the end of the road. Parks Canada's directions list no public transport, so ask the driver to wait.
Metrobus
C$2.50 exact cash, no cards on board (2026)Check the route
Drivers carry no change. You do not need it for downtown, and it does not help for Cape Spear.
Walk to Quidi Vidi
Free15–20 min from downtown on foot, about 5 min by car
A former fishing village over the hill from the harbour. Walking back is uphill in parts, so allow extra time.
When to head back
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Water Street 65 minutes before, and Signal Hill by taxi 80 minutes before.
For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave Water Street by 16:25 and Signal Hill by 16:10. Phone for the taxi before that, as there may not be one waiting. If you walk the North Head Trail, start by 14:30. Cape Spear needs the longest margin; leave it by 15:15.
If you are running late: Phone a taxi from wherever you are; the companies run around the clock. If you will miss all-aboard, phone the port agent number on your daily programme straight away. The City of St. John's cruise line is 709-576-8333.
Where people go wrong: Passengers go to Cape Spear without arranging a return, then find there is no public transport and no taxi waiting.
St. John's is one day. Time the whole cruise.

Grounds are open all year. The Visitor Centre opens daily 10:00–18:00 from 1 June to 9 October 2026, and Cabot Tower closes at 17:30. Parks Canada listed free admission under the Canada Strong Pass from 19 June to 7 September 2026.
North Head Trail
The classic coastal walk from the Signal Hill summit down to the Battery, above the harbour entrance.
1 hour on the trail, about 2 hours back to the pierFree
Rated difficult. It is 1.7 km one way with narrow sections beside steep drops, some climbs of nearly 100 m, and over 300 wooden stairs. Wear proper shoes and avoid it in fog or wet weather.

What to eat
- Fish and chips · The Duke of Duckworth, downtown
- Cod fish tacos, mussels, oysters · The Merchant Tavern, downtown
- Iceberg lager · Quidi Vidi Brewing Co., Quidi Vidi village
- Local cooking and dessert table · Mallard Cottage, Quidi Vidi village
- Salads, tarts and pastries · Rocket Bakery and Fresh Food, downtown

On your own or a ship excursion?
Skip the ship tour for downtown, which starts at the gangway. A tour is reasonable for Cape Spear if you do not want to arrange a taxi and waiting time, because there is no public transport. For the coastal trail, a guided hike such as the one Princess lists gives a transfer up and a naturalist guide, but the route is more than 300 wooden stairs either way. Boat tours from Iceberg Quest leave from Pier 6 on Harbour Drive, within reach on foot; check the price and timing with the operator.
| What | Ship | On your own | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Signal Hill and North Head walk | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Taxi up, then walk back on the trail | Depends on your line's price |
| Cape Spear | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Taxi both ways plus C$10 site admission | Depends on the taxi price you agree |
Common mistakes
Assuming a taxi will be waiting at the pier.
The City advises phoning for one. Agree a pick-up time and price before you leave the ship.
Going to Cape Spear with no return arranged.
There is no public transport listed. Ask the driver to wait or return at a set time.
Walking North Head in ordinary shoes or poor weather.
It is rated difficult, with drops and more than 300 stairs. Wear proper shoes and turn back in fog.
Assuming Parks Canada sites are staffed on every call.
The Visitor Centres open from 1 June to 9 October in 2026. Outside those dates you get the grounds only.
Not checking ship time against local time.
Newfoundland runs on a half-hour time zone. Follow the time set by your ship and check it against your phone.
Paying a bus fare with a card or a large note.
Metrobus needs exact cash, C$2.50. Or just walk downtown.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- St. John's is a safe city for visitors. The hazards are the coast and weather. Fog can come in quickly, and the edges at Cape Spear and on the North Head Trail drop straight to the Atlantic, so stay on the paths. Keep well back from the water on rough days. In town, the steep streets can be slippery when wet. Emergency number: 911.
- Accessibility
- Harbour Drive and Water Street are close to the ship and relatively level, but the cross streets are moderate to very steep. Signal Hill lists accessible services, and it can be reached by taxi to the summit. The North Head Trail is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. The Rooms has an accessibility page and can be reached by taxi.
- If it rains
- Fog or rain can hide the views at Signal Hill and Cape Spear, so change the plan rather than pay for a taxi to see nothing. The Rooms is the best indoor option, though it is closed on Mondays. The Johnson Geo Centre is a good second choice. Otherwise stay on Water Street with its pubs and shops.
- Crowds
- Only 39 ship visits were scheduled in 2026, most with one ship, so crowds are rarely a problem. Two-ship days, such as 14 July 2026 with Crown Princess at about 3,600 passengers and Vista, are the exception. On those days pre-book a taxi and visit Signal Hill early.
St. John's cruise port FAQ
Is St. John's a tender port?
Not normally. Ships dock at Piers 10–11 or Pier 17 on the harbour.
Is St. John's walkable from the cruise port?
Yes. Downtown is across Harbour Drive, a few minutes on foot. The streets away from the harbour are steep.
Can you walk to Signal Hill from the cruise port?
Fit walkers can, through the Battery, but it is a long climb. Most people take a taxi up, about 10 minutes, and walk or ride back.
How do I get to Cape Spear from St. John's cruise port?
By taxi or tour. It is about 20 km away and Parks Canada's directions list no public transport. Agree the waiting time before you leave.
How much does Cape Spear cost?
The latest Parks Canada listing shows C$10 for an adult, and youth are free.
What can I do in St. John's in one day from a cruise ship?
Cape Spear and Signal Hill in the morning, lunch at Quidi Vidi, then Water Street and Jellybean Row.
Can a cruise call at St. John's be cancelled?
Yes. The City says visits can change without notice because of marine conditions, and the Narrows is a narrow entrance in strong wind.
Is St. John's safe?
Yes. Take care on coastal paths and steep streets, and watch for fog.
