Portland Cruise Port

Quick answerPortland is a docking port: most ships berth at Ocean Gateway and some larger ships at the Portland Ocean Terminal on the Maine State Pier, both on Commercial Street at the edge of the Old Port. You walk into town in minutes and need no transport unless you go to Portland Head Light, which is a 15–20 minute taxi or rideshare away. Be back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Transport: Port of Portland, Maine (Ocean Gateway and Portland Ocean Terminal) to the Old Port

Portland's cruise berths sit on the working waterfront, so the Old Port's brick streets, seafood restaurants and the Casco Bay ferries are all within walking distance of the gangway. The peninsula is under 4 miles end to end and easy to cover on foot. The one sight most passengers want that is not walkable is Portland Head Light in Cape Elizabeth, reached by taxi, rideshare or a tour. Mornings can be cool and breezy even in summer, so bring a layer.

Walkable? Yes · about 10 min (0.5 km)

Both berths are on Commercial Street, the waterfront edge of the Old Port. Streets are flat along the water and climb inland towards Congress Street, the Arts District and Munjoy Hill. Some Old Port streets are cobbled.

Where your ship docks

  • Ocean Gateway (14 Ocean Gateway Pier) · 0.5 km to the centre — Where most ships dock and passengers clear customs. The Visit Portland Information Center is in the building: maps, restrooms, free Wi-Fi, staff advice and the pick-up point for excursions and local tours. Seasonal hours to 1 November 2026: Monday–Saturday 09:00–16:00, Sunday 10:00–15:00.
  • Portland Ocean Terminal, Maine State Pier · 0.5 km to the centre — Used by some larger ships, further along Commercial Street next to the Casco Bay Lines ferry terminal (Commercial and Franklin Streets). A small welcome shed hands out maps and brochures while ships are in port.

On foot

FreeAbout 5–15 min to the heart of the Old Port

Walk west along Commercial Street from either berth. The Portland Museum of Art in Congress Square is uphill and further; allow extra time.

Taxi or rideshare (Uber, Lyft)

Metered or app fare; check the app quoteAbout 15–20 min to Portland Head Light, Bug Light or Spring Point Ledge Light

The practical way to reach Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. Book your return in the app before you are short of time; pick-up waits can build when several ships are in.

Casco Bay Lines ferry to Peaks Island

$16 adult round trip in peak season (fare from June 2026; peak season ran to 12 October 2026)Roughly hourly sailings in the daytime

The terminal is at Commercial and Franklin Streets, next to the Maine State Pier. Off-peak schedules and fares differ; check the current timetable at the terminal before you sail and note your return sailing.

Greater Portland Metro bus

$2.25 single ride, $6.50 daily cap; Metro BREEZ $4.50 (from 1 August 2026)Varies by route

Tap-to-ride with a bank card or phone was introduced in 2026. Metro serves Portland, South Portland and towns north to Freeport and Brunswick, but not Cape Elizabeth, so it is no help for Portland Head Light.

Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad

$18.85 adult coach (2026)40 min round trip

Leaves from 65 Thames Street, next to Ocean Gateway, along the Eastern Promenade. Departures at 10:00, 11:00, 12:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 and 17:00, Tuesday to Sunday, until 25 October 2026.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard. From Portland Head Light, leave 80 minutes before all-aboard. From Peaks Island, be on a ferry leaving the island at least 2 hours before all-aboard.

Everything in the Old Port is a short walk, so the main risks are a late taxi or rideshare from Cape Elizabeth and missing a ferry back from the islands. Ferries are roughly hourly, so one missed sailing costs you an hour.

If you're running late

From Cape Elizabeth or South Portland, call a taxi or open a rideshare app straight away. From Peaks Island there is no road link, so you must wait for the next ferry. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

A one-day plan for Portland (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at Ocean Gateway at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:30 Walk off the ship. Pick up a map at the Visit Portland Information Center in Ocean Gateway (opens 09:00 Monday to Saturday, 10:00 on Sunday).

  2. 09:00 Taxi or rideshare to Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth, about 15–20 minutes.

  3. 09:30 Walk the cliff paths at Portland Head Light. The museum opens at 10:00 ($2 adult).

  4. 11:00 Ride back to the Old Port.

  5. 11:30 Walk Commercial Street, Exchange Street and the cobbled lanes of the Old Port.

  6. 12:30 Lunch, for example the brown butter lobster roll at Eventide Oyster Co. on Middle Street.

  7. 13:45 Option A: the Portland Museum of Art in Congress Square. Option B: walk the Eastern Promenade or take the 14:00 Narrow Gauge train from Thames Street.

  8. 15:45 Back towards Commercial Street for last shopping within a few minutes of the berth.

  9. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Skip ship tours of the Old Port: the town starts at the berth and is easy alone. A ship tour makes sense if you want several lighthouses in one trip (Portland Head Light, Bug Light and Spring Point Ledge Light) without arranging cars, or if you want to go further afield, such as Freeport or Kennebunkport, where traffic makes an independent return less predictable. For Portland Head Light alone, a shared taxi or rideshare is simple.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Portland

Trying to walk or take a bus to Portland Head Light.

Instead: It is in Cape Elizabeth and Metro buses do not go there. Use a taxi, rideshare or tour; allow 15–20 minutes each way.

Expecting the lighthouse museum to be open late in the season.

Instead: The museum closes after Indigenous Peoples Day in October; the park stays open.

Missing the return ferry from Peaks Island.

Instead: Sailings are about hourly. Plan to be on a ferry leaving the island at least 2 hours before all-aboard.

Dressing for summer only.

Instead: Mornings and evenings on the water are cool and breezy; bring a windproof layer.

Waiting until the last minute to book a rideshare back from Cape Elizabeth.

Instead: Request your car 80 minutes before all-aboard, earlier on multi-ship days.

Safety: is Portland safe for cruise passengers?

Portland is a small, easy city for visitors and the Old Port is busy in the daytime. Take normal city precautions with bags and phones. Commercial Street carries lorries and traffic to the working piers, so cross with care. At Portland Head Light, stay behind the fences on the cliffs: the rocks are slippery and waves can be strong. Casco Bay water is cold, so swim only at a beach and not off the rocks.

Emergency number: 911

Practical information

Crowds

Portland gets about 100 cruise calls a year from April to early November, and the Old Port is busiest when two ships are in. Visit Portland Head Light first thing, before the excursion coaches, and save the Old Port for the afternoon. Check the cruise schedule for your date.

Accessibility

The berths and Commercial Street are flat, but some Old Port side streets are cobbled and the streets climb steeply towards Congress Street and Munjoy Hill. The Portland Museum of Art offers accessibility help by phone. The Portland Observatory has 87 stairs and is not fully accessible. Fort Williams Park has paved paths near the lighthouse. Ask your taxi or rideshare service for an accessible vehicle in advance.

If it rains

Spend the time in the Portland Museum of Art, the Old Port's shops, cafés and breweries, and the Narrow Gauge railroad museum. The lighthouse cliffs are exposed and much less pleasant in rain and wind.
