Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerNewport is a tender port: large ships anchor in the harbour and tenders land at Perrotti Park, right in downtown Newport by Thames Street and the wharves. The mansions and the Cliff Walk are a long walk away, so take RIPTA Route 67 along Bellevue Avenue, which is free until 31 October 2026, or a taxi. Be back in the tender queue at Perrotti Park 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeNewport packs Gilded Age mansions, a clifftop path and a colonial harbour town into one small island city. The tender lands you on the downtown waterfront, so the wharves, Thames Street and the colonial streets are on your doorstep. The big draws, The Breakers and the Cliff Walk, sit on the far side of town along Bellevue Avenue. October is the busiest cruise month, with more than 20 calls scheduled in 2026, and a section of the Cliff Walk remains closed until repairs planned for 2027–2029.

Be in the tender queue at Perrotti Park 90 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the mansions or the Cliff Walk 2 hours before all-aboard.
Tender queues are longest in the last two hours as everyone returns at once. Route 67 and taxis are shared with other passengers and day visitors, so allow time for a full bus or a missing taxi on Bellevue Avenue.
If you're running late
If Route 67 is full or late, call a taxi or walk back down to the waterfront; downtown is reachable on foot. If you will miss the last tender, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.
Large ships anchor in the harbour and tender passengers to Perrotti Park on the downtown waterfront, a block from the visitor information centre. Some smaller ships instead dock at South Alofsin Pier at Fort Adams State Park, which is outside downtown. Bad weather can stop tendering, and calls are sometimes cancelled. If you booked a ship excursion you usually get priority tenders; independent passengers may need a tender ticket and should expect a wait at peak times.

For The Breakers and the Cliff Walk, going alone is simple: book a timed Breakers ticket online and ride Route 67. The ship's tour is worth it if you want a guided drive along Ocean Drive and several mansions without managing tickets, or if you value priority tenders on a busy day. Late in the season, after Route 67's free period ends on 31 October, compare the cost again.

Newport is safe for visitors. The main hazard is the Cliff Walk: stay on the path, keep out of fenced areas, and take care on the rocky, unpaved southern section, especially in wet weather. Do not climb down to the water at the Forty Steps in rough seas. Downtown streets are busy with traffic on cruise days; cross at marked crossings. Keep spare cash in your cabin safe.

Crowds
October is Newport's busiest cruise month, with more than 20 calls scheduled in 2026, and day visitors add to the crowds at weekends. Go to The Breakers on an early timed slot, before excursion groups arrive, and leave the wharves for the afternoon when you need to stay close to the tender landing.
Accessibility
Tender boarding depends on the sea state; ask the ship whether wheelchair users can transfer on the day. Downtown is mostly flat, though the wharves have uneven planks and cobbles. The Breakers, Marble House and Rosecliff are partly accessible: wheelchair users can enter the first floor, and a staff-operated lift reaches the second floor. The other Preservation Society houses are not accessible, and wheelchairs are not provided. Parts of the Cliff Walk near Memorial Boulevard are paved, but the southern section is rocky.
If it rains
Spend the day inside the mansions: The Breakers, Marble House and Rosecliff are all on Route 67. Downtown has shops and restaurants along Thames Street and the wharves. Skip the Cliff Walk in heavy rain, as the unpaved section becomes slippery.
