Quick answer: Ships dock at Taíno Bay in Puerto Plata city; there is no tender. The historic centre is about a 15-minute walk, or a 5-minute taxi, so you need no transport to see the town. Leave the centre 80 minutes before all-aboard and be on board 60 minutes before. If your ship calls at Amber Cove, this is the wrong guide: that port is about 12 km west of town.
Taíno Bay is Puerto Plata's in-town cruise port, opened in December 2021 on the city's former cargo pier. Puerto Plata has two cruise ports, and they work very differently. Taíno Bay sits at the edge of the historic centre, so you can walk to Umbrella Street, the main square and the fort. Amber Cove is a separate Carnival Corporation port at Maimón Bay, and it has a separate guide. Inside Taíno Bay there are free pools and a lazy river, so a quiet day at the port is also an option. The cable car, long the top trip here, is closed for rebuilding until 2028.

Taíno Bay Cruise Port · 1.1 km to the centre
One port with two piers, Muelle Viejo and Muelle Nuevo; the new pier is used most. Up to three ships at once: two Oasis-size and one smaller. Free tuk-tuks carry passengers along the pier, and tips are expected. Pool, lazy river, shops, an ATM, free Wi-Fi and restaurants are inside. Operated by ITM Group through Puerto Plata Port Investments. Lines that typically use it include Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Norwegian, MSC and Virgin Voyages.
Can you walk? Yes, about 15 min. About 15 minutes from the port to Umbrella Street and the historic centre. Sources give 7 to 20 minutes, so allow the longer figure for the way back. Mid-day heat is the main problem. Sources differ on the walk to the fort, from 15 minutes to just under 2 miles, so allow 40 minutes.
Getting to town
Port tuk-tuk
Free; tips expectedA few minutes
Runs from the ship along the pier to the terminal. The pier is 1,312 ft long, so it is also a short walk.
On foot to the historic centre
FreeAbout 15 min
Leave the port gate and walk into town. Keep to the busy streets and keep phones and bags out of sight.
Taxi from the dispatch stand
Fixed rates, per vehicle; confirm the fare before you get inAbout 5 min to the historic centre
Registered taxis wait at the stand in the terminal with flat rates to popular places. Fares are per van, not per person. Ask about the return before you leave.
Uber
App fareVaries
Uber operates, but drivers generally cannot enter the terminal, so you walk to the gate. Some travellers report booking and pricing problems.
When to head back
Be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the historic centre 80 minutes before all-aboard, the fort 100 minutes before, nearby beaches 75 to 80 minutes before, and Damajagua 2 hours before.
The walk back is short, but heat and the walk along the pier slow you down, so do not cut it finer. On a taxi trip to a beach, agree the pick-up time and place with your driver first.
If you are running late: In the centre, take a registered taxi to the port. If your driver does not appear, ask a restaurant or hotel to call one. Tourist police can be reached on 911 or +1 809 222 2026. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Where people go wrong: Confusing Taíno Bay with Amber Cove, which is a separate port about 12 km west of town.

On your own or a ship excursion?
Skip the ship's tour for the town: you can walk to it from the gate. A tour earns its price for the Damajagua waterfalls, which need a guide and gear, and for Cayo Arena, which takes about 1.5 hours by road before the boat. Do not book anything that relies on the cable car, which is closed until 2028.

Common mistakes
Following Amber Cove advice at Taíno Bay, or the other way round.
Check your port. Taíno Bay is in the city and walkable. Amber Cove is about 12 km west and needs a taxi or tour.
Planning to ride the cable car.
It has been shut since June 2024. Rebuilding began on 3 October 2026 and reopening is planned for the first quarter of 2028. Some 2026 guides still list it.
Going to the port beach to swim.
You cannot swim there. Take a taxi to a swimming beach, or use the free pools.
Getting into a taxi without confirming the fare.
Fares are per vehicle. Confirm the amount and the pick-up time at the dispatch stand before you go.
Walking back in the last half hour.
Leave the centre 80 minutes before all-aboard. The pier adds time, and the heat slows you down.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- The tourism board says crime is low for the region, but the UK government warns of a high crime rate and Australia advises a high degree of caution. Stay on busy streets, keep valuables out of sight, and hand over belongings if you are robbed. Avoid motorbike taxis and shared cars. Do not drink tap water; buy bottled water. Lifeguards may be absent at beaches, and the hurricane season runs from June to November. Emergency number: 911.
- Scams to know
- Bank card cloning: the UK government warns of cloned cards. Keep your card in view when you pay, or pay cash.
- ATM and card fraud: Australian advice says this is common in resort areas. Use the ATM inside the port or a bank.
- Robbery in unofficial taxis: Australian advice reports robberies and assaults. Use registered taxis from the port stand.
- Accessibility
- Taíno Bay is listed as wheelchair friendly, and free tuk-tuks run along the pier. Ask the port or your ship about a tuk-tuk suitable for your wheelchair. Taxis are ordinary vehicles, so ask at the stand before you plan a trip.
- If it rains
- Use the Amber Museum, the fort museum and Macorix House of Rum, with a long café stop near Parque Central. The port's shops and restaurants give some cover.
- Crowds
- Taíno Bay and Amber Cove together took 78% of the country's 2.8 million cruise passengers in 2025. Up to three ships can dock at Taíno Bay, and ships at Amber Cove add visitors to the town. See the fort first, then eat before or after the lunchtime peak.
