Quick answer: Ships dock at the Kingstown Cruise Ship Berth on the waterfront, and downtown is a 5–15 minute walk. The Botanic Gardens are about 10 minutes away by taxi at a government-approved fare, and Villa Beach about 15 minutes. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard; if three or more ships are in, yours may tender, so allow another 30.
Kingstown is the capital of St Vincent and a working port town rather than a resort. The cruise terminal sits on the waterfront with shops and a tourist desk, and the town's arched streets, cathedrals and market start a few minutes' walk away. The two classic stops, the Botanic Gardens (founded 1765) and Fort Charlotte on its ridge, are both a short taxi ride out. Taxis are not metered but fares are set by government, so agree the price in EC dollars before setting off. Beaches are on the south coast around Villa, and the waterfalls and Wallilabou Bay are long drives that need careful timing.

Kingstown Cruise Ship Berth and terminal · 0.5 km to the centre
Two berths on the Kingstown waterfront. The terminal has about 20 shops, a tourist information desk, a post office, a small food court and a coffee house. Taxis wait outside. Global Ports Holding signed a 30-year concession to run the port in October 2026 and expects to take over in early 2027; no berth changes are confirmed for the 2026/27 season. Distance is approximate.
Can you walk? Partly, about 15 min. Downtown Kingstown (Bay Street, the arches, the cathedrals and the market) is a 5–15 minute walk. The Botanic Gardens, Fort Charlotte and the beaches need a taxi or minibus: the fort is a steep climb on a partly paved road. Distance is approximate.
Dock or tender: The terminal has berths for two ships. When more than two ships are in port, the extra ships anchor and tender passengers ashore; check your daily programme.
Getting to town

Ferry to Bequia (Bequia Express)
EC$25 one way (2026)About 1 hour each way
Ferries leave from near the cruise pier, cash only. With an hour each way plus queueing, Bequia is only realistic on a long call and only if you confirm the return sailing first; otherwise use a ship tour.
When to head back
Be back on board by 16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard. If your ship is tendering, be at the tender pier by 16:00.
Kingstown traffic builds in the afternoon and taxis from the north of the island take well over an hour. From Dark View Falls (about 75 minutes' drive) leave by 14:45; from Villa Beach leave by 16:15.
If you are running late: Taxis are easy to find in Kingstown and at Villa. If you are delayed, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Where people go wrong: Taking an unmetered taxi without agreeing the fare, or attempting the northern waterfalls on a short call.
Kingstown is one day. Time the whole cruise.

On your own or a ship excursion?
Kingstown, the Botanic Gardens, Fort Charlotte and Villa Beach are easy to do yourself with a taxi at the government rate, and a ship tour adds little. A ship tour is worth it for Dark View Falls, Wallilabou Bay, the Vermont Nature Trail, La Soufrière or a Grenadines boat day: these involve long, winding drives or sea crossings, and the ship waits for its own tours if they run late. Bequia by public ferry is possible only on a long call.
| What | Ship | On your own | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botanic Gardens | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Taxi EC$17 (US$7) per car from the berth (approved rate, 2022) plus US$5 entry (2026) | Usually large for a group of two to four |
| Island tour by taxi | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Kingstown tour EC$104 (US$39) for two hours, 1–4 people (approved rate, 2022) | Depends on the tour |
| Dark View Falls | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Approved taxi rate from the berth EC$277 (US$104) for 1–4 people (2022); confirm whether one way or return | Depends on group size; the ship's tour removes return risk |
Common mistakes
Getting into a taxi without agreeing the fare.
Taxis are unmetered. Agree the fare in EC$, and whether it is one way or return, before you leave.
Trying to walk up to Fort Charlotte in the midday heat.
The road is steep and partly unpaved. Take a taxi up.
Booking a self-guided trip to the north of the island on a short call.
Dark View Falls is about 75 minutes each way on winding roads. Use a ship tour unless you have a long call.
Taking the Bequia ferry without checking the return sailing.
The crossing takes an hour each way and boats are not hourly. Confirm the return time before you buy.
Paying in US dollars and losing on the change.
US dollars are widely accepted but change usually comes in EC$. Carry small EC$ notes for minibuses and stalls.
Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- Most visits are trouble-free, but the UK government notes a rise in gang-related gun crime, some in public areas. Daytime sightseeing in Kingstown and Villa is normal, but keep valuables out of sight, avoid carrying a lot of cash and avoid isolated areas, including empty beaches. Use only licensed taxis. Some beaches have strong rip currents and no lifeguards or flags, so swim where others do and follow local advice. Traffic drives on the left and pavements are narrow. Emergency number: 911 or 999.
- Scams to know
- Taxi overcharging: taxis are unmetered; use the government-approved fare, agree it in EC$ before setting off and use only licensed taxis (UK FCDO; Government of SVG).
- Unclear taxi pricing: check whether a quoted price is per person or per vehicle, and one way or return (Government of SVG fare list).
- Accessibility
- The terminal and the walk into downtown are mostly flat, but pavements are narrow, uneven and busy in places. Fort Charlotte is on a steep ridge; reach it by taxi. Minibuses are small and often crowded, so book a taxi and ask for a vehicle that suits your needs. If your ship tenders, ask the ship about wheelchair transfers.
- If it rains
- Showers are often short. Spend the time in the cathedrals, the terminal shops and cafés, and the town's arcades, which give cover along Bay Street. The Botanic Gardens are still pleasant in light rain. Avoid the walk to Fort Charlotte when wet, and think twice about waterfall trips after heavy rain, when roads and paths are slippery.
- Crowds
- Kingstown takes two ships at the berths, with others at anchor, so it rarely feels overrun. The terminal and taxi rank are busiest just after arrival; walk into town first and take a taxi to the gardens once the rush has gone. The market is best early. Villa Beach is busier at weekends with local families.
