Quick answer: Harvest Caye is Norwegian Cruise Line's private island in southern Belize, and ships dock at its pier, so there is no tender. The beach, pool and shops are a walk or free tram ride from the ship, and everything on the island is in one resort area. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, and allow longer if you take the ferry to Placencia, because you depend on the boat's timetable.
Harvest Caye is a 75-acre island about 1.5 miles south of the Placencia Peninsula, built and run by Norwegian Cruise Line and visited only by its ships. It is a resort day rather than a town day: a seven-acre beach, a large free pool, a saltwater lagoon for watersports, ziplines from a 136-foot tower and a small shopping village of local stalls. Food, drinks and activities cost extra, and your drinks package does not apply ashore. The main decision is whether to stay on the island or take the short ferry to Placencia village, which has limited daily seats.

Plan this day to my shipWhere the ship docks
Harvest Caye pier · 0.5 km to the centre
A single long pier runs from the island's northern tip and takes one ship at a time, so you only share the island with your own ship. The pier is canopied; you can walk it or take a golf cart. The 0.5 km figure is approximate and depends on which part of the island you head for.
Can you walk? Yes, about 10 min. Paved paths link the pier, shopping village, pool, beach and Flighthouse, and complimentary trams run between stops. The pier walk itself is long, so allow time for it at both ends of the day. Walking time is approximate.
Getting to town
On foot or free tram
FreeAbout 5–15 min from the ship to the pool or beach
Walk the canopied pier into the island. Complimentary trams stop around the island, and beach wheelchairs are available near the entrance.
Golf cart
Rental price set on the island; check on arrivalUse for the day
Golf carts can be rented to get around. Beach cabana and villa rentals include a cart.
Ferry to Placencia village
Ticket sold through the ship's shore excursions desk or at the Harvest Caye marina; confirm the current fare when booking15–20 min each way
A ferry runs from the Harvest Caye marina to the mainland. Seats are capped each day and sell out, so book early. Ask for the return departure times when you buy the ticket and plan around them.
When to head back
Be back on board by 16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard. If you went to Placencia, take a ferry that lands on Harvest Caye by 16:00.
Everything on the island is close, but the pier is long and many passengers head back at the same time. The Placencia ferry runs to a fixed schedule with limited seats, so missing one can cost you a long wait; aim for an earlier boat than you think you need.
If you are running late: If you are on the mainland and cannot make a ferry that lands by 16:00, tell the ferry staff and call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away. Do not try to hire a private boat without checking it is licensed.
Where people go wrong: Taking the Placencia ferry without checking return times, then missing the boat that lands in time.
Harvest Caye is one day. Time the whole cruise.

On your own or a ship excursion?
On Harvest Caye itself there is no independent alternative: the ziplines, watersports and boat tours are all sold through NCL, and the beach and pool are free. Book the ship's tour if you want to reach the mainland interior, such as river tubing at Big Falls, the Nim Li Punit Maya site or a Maya village near Cockscomb, because those trips involve a boat transfer and a road journey and the ship waits for its own tours. Placencia village is the one realistic do-it-yourself trip, by the ferry, on a long call.

Safety, access and bad weather
- Safety
- The island itself is a controlled resort area with NCL staff and local employees, and it is low risk. Sun and heat are the main hazards: shade is limited, so use sunscreen and drink water. On the mainland, the UK government lists Placencia among tourist areas where theft of cash, phones and cards happens; keep valuables out of sight. For any boat or watersports trip outside NCL's programme, use only registered, licensed operators and check the weather, since accidents in Belize have been linked to poor safety precautions and bad weather. Use only taxis with green licence plates and agree the fare first. Emergency number: 911 (or 90).
- Scams to know
- Unlicensed taxis on the mainland: use only taxis with green licence plates, agree the fare before getting in and expect to pay cash (UK FCDO).
- Unlicensed boat and snorkel operators: use only registered and licensed operators; injuries and deaths in Belize have been linked to inadequate safety precautions (UK FCDO).
- Petty theft in Placencia: theft of cash, cards and phones from tourists is reported there; keep valuables out of sight and use ATMs inside banks or businesses (UK FCDO).
- Accessibility
- Paths on the island are paved and suitable for strollers and scooters, and free trams run between stops. Beach wheelchairs are available near the island entrance. The pier is long, so ask about a golf cart if walking distance is a problem. NCL rates its cabana rental as easy, on level ground with possible gravel or a few steps. The Flighthouse and ziplines involve climbing and harnesses. The ferry to Placencia is a small-boat transfer; ask the excursions desk about boarding before you book.
- If it rains
- Harvest Caye is an outdoor resort with little indoor space beyond the bars, shops and restrooms. In a passing shower, sit it out under the restaurant roofs; tropical rain often clears quickly. In steady rain or storms, watersports and ziplines may stop, and many passengers simply stay on board. Placencia village has cafés and shops along the Sidewalk if you are already there.
- Crowds
- Only one ship can dock, so the island's crowd is your own ship's passengers, but that can mean several thousand people. The beach end nearest the entrance and the pool fill first and shade goes quickly. Go ashore early, or wait until after the first rush and head for the far end of the beach. Afternoon is quieter on the beach as people drift back to the ship.
