Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: St Barts is a tender port: ships anchor outside Gustavia harbour and tenders land you in the middle of town. Gustavia and Shell Beach are both walkable, and the rest of the island is at most about 20 minutes by taxi or hire car, as there are no buses. Be back at the tender landing 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Gustavia is a small, tidy harbour town of red roofs, superyachts and luxury boutiques, the capital of a French island with a Swedish past. Cruise ships are kept outside the harbour and send passengers in by tender, which lands right on the waterfront. The town, its two old forts and Shell Beach are all on foot. Beyond that, the island has no public transport, so a trip to Saint-Jean or the other beaches means a taxi from the waterfront rank or a hire car. Prices are high, shops are duty-free, and many close at lunchtime.

Where the ship docks

  • Gustavia tender landing (harbour waterfront) · 0.1 km to the centre

Tenders land in the harbour in the centre of town. The taxi rank is on the Gustavia waterfront by the ferry dock.

Can you walk? Yes, about 5 min. The shops and restaurants start at the landing. Shell Beach is about a 10-minute walk south through town. The forts sit on low hills, so expect short climbs. Distances are approximate.

Tender: Ships anchor outside the sheltered Gustavia harbour and tender passengers to the waterfront in the centre of Gustavia. Bring your passport or the ID your ship asks for. Tenders run to the ship's schedule; allow extra time in the last two hours before all-aboard, when queues build. Gustavia had 212 cruise calls and about 98,500 cruise passengers in 2025, more than in any year for a decade.

Getting to town

On foot

Free5 min to the shops; about 10 min to Shell Beach

Walk around the harbour. Pavements are narrow and the roads are busy with cars and scooters.

Taxi

Fixed fares set by the Collectivité (2024 grid, valid to 2028); agree the price before setting offUp to about 20 min to anywhere on the island

The rank is on the Gustavia waterfront by the ferry dock (+590 690 27 66 31). Taxis can be scarce on busy days, so book your return trip with the driver who takes you out. There is no public transport.

Hire car

Varies; book well in advanceAbout 20 min end to end

The most popular way around. Agencies are in Gustavia and at the airport, and some deliver. Roads are narrow, steep and winding, often along cliff edges; drive with care.

When to head back

Be at the tender landing by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard (90 minutes before). From Saint-Jean or other beaches, have your taxi leave by 15:30.

Tender queues build late in the afternoon, and taxis can be hard to find at short notice, especially on days with more than one ship. Fix the return time with your driver when you set out.

If you are running late: If no taxi turns up, call the Gustavia rank (+590 690 27 66 31) or ask a restaurant to call one. If you will miss the last tender, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Where people go wrong: Taking a taxi to Saint-Jean without booking the return, then struggling to find one in time for the last tenders.

Gustavia is one day. Time the whole cruise.

  • Ships do not wait.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Most visitors need no ship tour: Gustavia, the forts and Shell Beach are all on foot. A ship tour makes sense for an island drive if you do not want to hunt for a taxi on a busy day, for diving, fishing or boat trips sold through the ship (which can sell out when more than one ship is in), or if you prefer a guaranteed return to the tender.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming there is a bus to the beaches.

There is no public transport. Use a taxi or a hire car, or stay in Gustavia and Shell Beach on foot.

  • Taking a taxi out without arranging the return.

Taxis can be scarce. Agree a pick-up time with the driver, or keep the rank's number.

  • Planning shopping for early afternoon.

Some shops close at lunchtime. Shop in the morning or later in the afternoon.

  • Going ashore without the documents the ship asks for.

St Barts is French territory with its own entry rules. Carry your passport or ID as instructed in your daily programme.

  • Returning for the last tender.

Aim to be at the landing 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
St Barts is low risk: Canada advises normal precautions. Petty theft such as pickpocketing and bag snatching happens, so keep valuables out of sight, including in cars. The main hazards are on the roads and in the sea. Roads are narrow, steep and congested, often along cliff edges, and accidents are increasing; take care walking along them. Riptides are common, rescue services are limited, and you should follow beach flags. Use insect repellent, as dengue is present. Emergency number: 112 (police 17, ambulance 15, fire 18).
Scams to know
  • No widespread scams are documented; the main risk is petty theft, so keep bags closed and valuables out of sight (Government of Canada; US State Department).
Accessibility
The tender landing is in the town centre, and the harbour front is mostly level, but pavements are narrow and the roads busy. The forts are uphill. Shell Beach is soft shell and pebble, hard going for wheelchairs. Tender boarding depends on the swell; ask the ship whether wheelchair users can transfer on the day. There is no public transport; ask the taxi rank in advance for a suitable vehicle.
If it rains
Gustavia is compact, so a wet day means the Wall House museum, the boutiques along Quai de la République and Rue du Général de Gaulle, and a long lunch. Showers often pass quickly. Rough seas can slow or stop tenders, so watch the ship's announcements.
Crowds
Cruise calls are rising, with 212 in 2025. Taxis and ship-sold activities run short when more than one ship is in. Go to the forts early and the beach in the afternoon, and book taxis ahead on busy days.
