Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips berth on the Charlottetown waterfront, next to Founders' Food Hall, and you walk straight into downtown; no transport is needed. When a second large ship is in port, one may anchor and tender to the same pier. Be back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if you are tendering or have gone out to Cavendish.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeCharlottetown is a small provincial capital where the cruise pier sits at the foot of the old town. The waterfront boardwalk, Peake's Wharf, Victoria Row and St Dunstan's Basilica are all within walking distance, and the Founders' Food Hall in the restored 1906 railway station is the first building you reach. The big decision is whether to stay in town or go 40 km to Cavendish for Green Gables and the north-shore beaches of PEI National Park. There is no direct public link to Cavendish that suits a port day, so that trip means a ship tour, a private tour or a taxi.
Walkable? Yes · about 5 min
The waterfront, Peake's Wharf and Founders' Food Hall are a few minutes' walk from the gangway. The downtown grid (Queen Street, Great George Street, Victoria Row) begins just uphill from the waterfront. Victoria Park is about 38 minutes' walk along the boardwalk.

Cruise lines run tours to the national park, Avonlea Village and the north-shore coast. These take care of the timing on the 40 km road to Cavendish.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back at the gangway 60 minutes before all-aboard if you stayed downtown. If your ship is tendering, or you went out to Cavendish or the north-shore beaches, allow 90 minutes.
Downtown is a few minutes from the pier, so the risk is small if you stay in town. The road trip to Cavendish takes about 45 minutes each way, and summer traffic at Green Gables is heavy; Parks Canada expected very high visitor numbers in 2026.
If you're running late
Downtown, walk back down to the waterfront: the pier is next to Founders' Food Hall. From Cavendish, a taxi or Kari is the only quick option; set off early. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme.
Normally a docked port. When more than one large ship calls on the same day, a ship may anchor in the harbour and tender passengers to the same terminal pier. Your daily programme will say which applies.

Skip the ship tour for Charlottetown itself: the pier is in town and the downtown streets, waterfront and basilica are easy to see alone. A tour is worth it for Cavendish, Green Gables and the north-shore beaches, because the island has no convenient public transport for that trip and the round trip is about 90 minutes by road before you add time on site. If several of you share a taxi or Kari, an independent Green Gables trip is possible on a long call, but leave a wide margin.
Planning the day around a tour of Province House.
Instead: It was listed as closed for conservation in September 2025. Check Parks Canada's page first, and plan St Dunstan's and the Confederation Centre instead.
Expecting a swimming beach within walking distance.
Instead: Victoria Park is waterfront, not a beach. For sand and swimming you need transport to Brackley Beach, Cavendish or Kinlock Beach.
Trying to reach Green Gables by public bus.
Instead: Use a ship tour, a private tour, or a taxi or Kari. Cavendish is about 45 minutes away by road.
Leaving Cavendish late on a busy summer afternoon.
Instead: Aim to be back at the pier 90 minutes before all-aboard. Parks Canada warned of very high visitation in 2026.
Assuming your ship will dock when another big ship is in port.
Instead: Check the daily programme. A second ship may anchor and tender, which adds queue time each way.
Charlottetown is a small, quiet city and the downtown is safe to walk by day. The main hazards are ordinary ones: traffic on the waterfront roads, the open edges of the boardwalk by the water, and sun on exposed north-shore beaches. At the national park beaches, swim only where lifeguards are on duty. Canada's emergency number is 911.
Emergency number: 911
Crowds
Port Charlottetown had a record 94 ship calls and over 220,000 passengers in 2024, and autumn brings the most calls. On two-ship days the waterfront and food hall are busiest just after arrival and again before all-aboard. Go uphill into downtown first, eat lunch a little early or late, and leave Peake's Wharf for the end of the day. At Green Gables, July and August are the busiest months.
Accessibility
The pier, terminal, Founders' Food Hall and the waterfront boardwalk are close together, so step-free distances are short. Victoria Park has an accessible playground. The Harbour Hopper amphibious tour needs you to climb about 12 steps and cannot take wheelchairs, scooters, walkers or strollers. Green Gables lists accessible services; ask Parks Canada for details. On a tender day, ask the ship whether wheelchair users can transfer.
If it rains
Spend the morning at the Confederation Centre of the Arts gallery (closed Mondays) and St Dunstan's Basilica, then take a long lunch at Founders' Food Hall, which seats about 500 under one roof next to the ship. Shops on Victoria Row and Queen Street fill the rest of the time.
