Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock at a pier in Nawiliwili Harbor, so there is no tender. Kalapaki Beach and the Anchor Cove and Harbor Mall shops are within walking distance, but Lihue is about 3 km away and best reached by taxi, ride-hail or rental car (about 10 minutes). Be back at the ship at least 60 minutes before all-aboard, and 90 minutes or more if you drive to the south or north shore.

Open my full Nawiliwili (Lihue) day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Nawiliwili (Lihue)? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeNawiliwili is Kauai's main harbour, a short drive below Lihue, the island's commercial and government centre. The pier sits close to Kalapaki Bay, a sheltered beach with restaurants, so a slow day needs no transport at all. Everything else on Kauai is spread along one main road around the island, which is why many passengers rent a car. In autumn 2026 the day is also shaped by Hurricane Lowell: Waimea Canyon and Koke'e state parks remained closed in mid-October, and access to parts of the Wailua River was restricted. Check current closures before you plan anything beyond Lihue.
Walkable? Partly · about 20 min (3 km)
Kalapaki Beach is about a 20-minute walk from the terminal, and the Anchor Cove and Harbor Mall shops are closer. Lihue itself is about 3 km away by road and is not a sensible walk; take a car for 10 minutes instead.
Where your ship docks
On foot to Kalapaki Beach and the harbour shops
FreeAbout 20 min to Kalapaki Beach
Follow the harbour road towards Kalapaki Bay. Harbor Mall and Anchor Cove Shopping Center are on the way and closer to the pier.
Taxi or ride-hail (Uber, Lyft)
Metered or app fare; agree or check before you goAbout 10 min to Lihue
Available at or near the port. Fine for Lihue, the Kauai Museum and Kilohana; costly for longer trips around the island.
Rental car
Book ahead; prices vary by dateAbout 30 min to Poipu, about 1 hour to Hanalei
The most flexible way to see the island. Agency shuttles meet passengers at the terminal and take them to the rental offices. There is essentially one main road around the island, so navigation is simple but traffic can slow returns.
The Kaua'i Bus
Pay by contactless card or phone (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Apple Pay, Google Pay) or Holomua card; check kauai.gov for the current fareVaries by route
County bus with routes through Lihue, including Route 70 Lihue and the 100/200 and 400/500 mainline routes. There is no service on Sundays. Generally not practical for a timed cruise day.
Free shopping shuttles
FreeShort ride
Shuttles to Lihue shopping centres are often available on ship days. Who runs them and how often varies by ship; check the pier on arrival.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard from Kalapaki or Lihue. If you drive to Poipu or the north shore, leave 90 minutes plus the full drive time.
Kauai's main road is the only route for most trips, so one accident or roadworks can stop traffic. Hurricane Lowell recovery work was still under way in October 2026, and rain can slow the scenic drives. Return the rental car early enough to ride the agency shuttle back to the pier.
If you're running late
If you are running late, call a taxi or ride-hail straight to Nawiliwili Harbor rather than waiting for a bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number in your daily programme at once.

⏱ 1–1.5 hours$15 adult, $12 seniors, $10 ages 8–17 (2026)
Tip: Open 09:00–16:00 Monday to Friday and closed on Sundays.

⏱ 2.5–3 hours including the driveBoat tour priced by the operator
Tip: After Hurricane Lowell the river reopened with limits in September 2026: hiking beyond the trailhead and access to Uluwehi (Secret) Falls were closed, and individual kayakers could not enter the Fern Grotto. Check before you go.
Poipu and Spouting Horn
The sunny south shore, about 30 minutes' drive, with Poipu Beach Park and the Spouting Horn blowhole at the end of Lawai Road.
⏱ 3–4 hours including the driveParking on site; no entry fee stated by sources
Tip: Spouting Horn is best when a south swell is running. Plan the drive back with a 90-minute margin.
Waimea Canyon State Park
Normally Kauai's most famous view, about an hour's drive each way from the port.
⏱ 5–6 hours including the driveWhen open, non-residents pay $5 per person entry plus $10 per car parking (2026)

For Kalapaki Beach, Lihue and the Kauai Museum you do not need a ship tour. A rental car is the best value for a couple or family who want Poipu, Spouting Horn or the north shore, as long as you leave a generous return margin. Ship tours earn their price for helicopter flights, boat trips along the coast, and anywhere the drive back is long, because the ship waits for its own tours. While Waimea Canyon and Koke'e are closed after Hurricane Lowell, do not book any tour that depends on them without confirming it is running.
Planning a Waimea Canyon drive in autumn 2026.
Instead: Waimea Canyon, Koke'e and Koke'e Road were closed after Hurricane Lowell as of mid-October 2026. Check the state parks site before you plan, and choose Poipu or Lihue instead.
Trying to walk to Lihue.
Instead: It is about 3 km along busy roads. Walk to Kalapaki Beach and take a car for Lihue.
Counting on the county bus on a Sunday.
Instead: The Kaua'i Bus does not run on Sundays. Use a rental car, taxi or ride-hail.
Returning a rental car at the last minute.
Instead: Allow time to return the car and ride the agency shuttle to the pier; aim to drop it 2 hours before all-aboard.
Swimming at Kalapaki in winter surf without checking conditions.
Instead: There are no lifeguards and winter swells can cause rip currents. Swim only when the bay is calm.
Kauai is generally safe for visitors. The main hazards are the ocean and the roads. Kalapaki Beach has no lifeguards, and rip currents can form in rough winter conditions, so follow posted signs and stay in calm water. Do not leave valuables in a parked car at beaches or lookouts. After Hurricane Lowell in September 2026, many state lands closed; obey closure signs and barricades, which exist because of fallen trees and damaged trails. Carry your ship card and photo ID.

Crowds
Rental car shuttles and taxis are busiest straight after the ship clears, when most passengers leave at once. Book a rental car in advance, or spend the first part of the morning at Kalapaki Beach and the harbour shops and head out once the queue has gone. Kalapaki is calmest early, before passengers on beach days arrive. Check the cruise schedule on the Hawaii DOT Harbors site to see whether another ship is in port on your date.
Accessibility
The ship docks alongside, so there is no tender transfer. The area near the pier, the harbour shops and the paved path at Kalapaki Beach are the easiest places to explore; the beach itself is sand. Listings show accessible parking and an accessible restroom at the Kauai Museum; confirm on arrival. Accessible vans should be booked in advance. Many outdoor sights involve sand, steps or uneven trails.
If it rains
Kauai's rainiest months are typically March, October and December. Spend the morning in the Kauai Museum (closed Sundays), then lunch in Lihue and the shops at Kilohana, Anchor Cove or Harbor Mall. Scenic drives lose their views in low cloud and can be slowed by rain, so stay close to the port.
