Honolulu Cruise Port

Quick answerMost ships dock at Pier 2 on Ala Moana Boulevard; a second ship uses Pier 11 by Aloha Tower, about half a mile away, close to downtown and Chinatown. Downtown is walkable, but Waikiki is about 15 minutes by car and Pearl Harbor about 9.5 miles away, so use a taxi, ride-hail or TheBus ($3.25 a ride from July 2026). Book the USS Arizona Memorial and Diamond Head before you sail, and leave Pearl Harbor two hours before all-aboard.

Transport: Honolulu Harbor (Pier 2 and Pier 11, Aloha Tower) to downtown Honolulu

Honolulu Harbor puts you on the edge of downtown, within walking distance of Chinatown and the Aloha Tower, with Waikiki a short drive east along the shore. The day here is shaped by reservations rather than distance: the USS Arizona Memorial programme, Diamond Head and ʻIolani Palace all need tickets booked in advance, and walk-up entry is either limited or not offered. Pick one booked anchor for the day, build the rest around it, and allow for Honolulu traffic on the way back.

Walkable? Partly · about 15 min

Downtown and Chinatown are walkable from Pier 11; the King Kamehameha I statue downtown is about 15 minutes on foot from the port. Waikiki (hotels about 3.3–4.8 miles away), Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head need transport.

Where your ship docks

  • Pier 2 Cruise Terminal — The primary cruise terminal, used by most lines, at 521 Ala Moana Blvd; the entrance is at the west end of Channel Street. Kakaʻako is just under a mile away. Follow current signs for the ground-transport area, which the state has changed. No wi-fi at the terminal.
  • Pier 11 (Aloha Tower) — The alternate terminal, used when a second ship is in. Entrance on the north extension of Aloha Tower Drive, beside Aloha Tower Marketplace, a couple of blocks from Chinatown. Free wi-fi at the marketplace.

TheBus

$3.25 cash per boarding, exact fare, no transfers; $7.50 daily cap with a HOLO card ($2 card fee) (from July 2026)Pearl Harbor from Waikiki about 1 hour or more

Route 20 runs between the airport and stops near both piers (Ala Moana Blvd opposite South St for Pier 2; S. King St and Bethel St for Pier 11). For Pearl Harbor from Waikiki, the W Line and Route 42 board on Kuhio Avenue. Drivers carry no change. A HOLO card gives transfers and the daily cap; buy or load it at holocard.net or a HOLO retailer.

Taxi or ride-hail (Uber, Lyft)

Waikiki to Pearl Harbor: Uber about $26–41, taxi $45–70 (2026)About 15 min to Waikiki; 25–30 min to Pearl Harbor without traffic

The most practical option for a timed Pearl Harbor or Diamond Head slot. Rush hour runs towards Honolulu from about 06:00 to 08:30 and out to the west from about 15:30 to 18:30.

On foot

FreeAbout 15 min to the King Kamehameha I statue

From Pier 11 you can walk to Chinatown and downtown. From Pier 2 allow longer; the piers are about half a mile apart.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Pearl Harbor two hours before all-aboard by taxi or ride-hail, Waikiki or Diamond Head 90 minutes before, and downtown 75 minutes before.

Pearl Harbor is 25–30 minutes away in light traffic, but the afternoon rush starts around 15:30. Diamond Head entry slots also run to a fixed timetable, so a late slot leaves little room.

If you're running late

Order a ride-hail rather than waiting for a bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

A one-day plan for Honolulu (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 07:00, all-aboard is 17:30, a weekday from Tuesday to Saturday, and a USS Arizona Memorial reservation for about 09:30.

  1. 08:00 Ride-hail from the pier to the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center. Leave all bags on the ship; only a small wallet is allowed.

  2. 08:30 Arrive at least an hour before your programme. Check in at the Ticket Validation Desk 10 minutes before your time.

  3. 09:30 USS Arizona Memorial programme: orientation, boat to the memorial and back. Watch the 23-minute film and the free museums before or after.

  4. 11:45 Ride-hail back to downtown.

  5. 12:30 Lunch in Chinatown, for example a poke bowl at Maguro Brothers.

  6. 13:30 ʻIolani Palace tour (booked in advance; 60–90 minutes), at King and Richards Streets.

  7. 15:15 Walk back past the Aloha Tower to the pier.

  8. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

If you could not get USS Arizona Memorial tickets on Recreation.gov, a ship's Pearl Harbor tour is the most reliable way in, because same-day in-person tickets are no longer issued and standby waits can last hours. The same applies to Diamond Head if the 30-day window sold out before you booked. Otherwise downtown, Chinatown, ʻIolani Palace and Waikiki are easy on your own with a ride-hail.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Honolulu

Turning up at Pearl Harbor without a USS Arizona Memorial reservation.

Instead: Book on Recreation.gov 8 weeks ahead or at 15:00 HST the day before. Same-day in-person tickets are no longer issued.

Taking a bag to Pearl Harbor.

Instead: Leave it on the ship. Only a small wallet is allowed; storage costs extra and adds a queue.

Going to Diamond Head without a reservation.

Instead: Non-residents need an advance slot from gostateparks.hawaii.gov; you will be turned away otherwise.

Planning ʻIolani Palace on a Sunday or Monday, or as a walk-up.

Instead: It opens Tuesday to Saturday only and sells tickets online in advance.

Assuming you dock at the same pier as last time.

Instead: Check whether your ship is at Pier 2 or Pier 11; they are half a mile apart and directions differ.

Safety: is Honolulu safe for cruise passengers?

Honolulu is generally safe for visitors. Use normal city awareness in downtown and Chinatown, especially after dark. The real risks on a port day are heat and sun on the Diamond Head trail and ocean conditions at unguarded beaches; swim where lifeguards are on duty. Keep valuables out of sight in parked or hired cars.

Practical information

Crowds

Pearl Harbor programmes run every 15 minutes from 08:00; booking a morning slot leaves the afternoon free and keeps you clear of the late traffic. Book Diamond Head as soon as the 30-day window opens for your date. Avoid the westbound afternoon rush from about 15:30 if you are heading back from Pearl Harbor late.

Accessibility

Pier 2 has porters and luggage storage, but wheelchair services and accessible ramps or lifts are not listed. At Pearl Harbor, ask the park (808 422-3399) about access on the memorial boat. The Diamond Head trail climbs 560 feet over 1.6 miles round trip and is not suitable for wheelchairs. ʻIolani Palace tours cover two floors; ask the palace about access when booking. Ride-hail drivers can drop you close to most downtown sights.

If it rains

Pearl Harbor's museums, ʻIolani Palace and Ala Moana Center work in rain. Diamond Head's trail is exposed; if it is wet, use your slot only if you are confident on slippery steps.
