Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock at Kahului Harbor, a working commercial port about 1–2 miles from the town centre, so there is no tender but little within walking distance. Most passengers take a taxi, ride-hail or rental car (the airport is about 2.5 miles away); the Maui Bus costs $2 a ride. Book ʻĪao Valley or Waiʻānapanapa in advance, and allow 60 minutes to get back on board from anywhere near Kahului.

Open my full Kahului day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Kahului? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeKahului is Maui's commercial port, not a resort town, so the day is about getting out to the island. The big three are Haleakalā's summit, the ʻĪao Valley and the Road to Hana, and each needs a plan: Haleakalā is a long climb by car, ʻĪao and Waiʻānapanapa need state park reservations, and the full Road to Hana takes longer than most port calls. Lahaina is reopening in stages after the 2023 fire; visitors are welcome at open businesses but must keep out of closed areas.
Walkable? Partly
Kahului town and its shopping centres are about 1–2 miles away; some passengers walk to Queen Kaʻahumanu Center, but the walk through the port area is not pleasant. All the main sights need a car or tour.

Rental car
Varies; book well aheadKahului Airport is about 2.5 miles, under 10 min, from the port
The most flexible option for Haleakalā, ʻĪao or Paia. Most rental desks are at the airport; some companies run a shuttle from the port, otherwise take a taxi or ride-hail. Allow time to return the car and get back to the pier.
Taxi or ride-hail
Agree or check the fare before you set offAbout 20 min to ʻĪao Valley; about 15 min to Paia
Licensed taxis can enter the port; ride-hail drivers pick up outside the gate. Demand can spike when a ship is in.
Maui Bus
$2 a ride, $4 day pass (2026)Slower than driving
A cheap way to reach Kahului's shopping centres and Wailuku. Check routes and times in the Maui Bus app or at mauicounty.gov/bus before relying on it for the return.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the Haleakalā summit three and a half hours before all-aboard, and Hana-side stops at least four and a half hours before.
The summit is about 90 minutes to two hours' drive from the port. The return from the far end of the Road to Hana takes two and a half to three hours on a narrow road with one-lane bridges, and most single-car accidents on it happen on the way back. If you have a rental car, add the time to return it at the airport and get a taxi to the pier.
If you're running late
Call a licensed taxi, which can drive into the port. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Take the ship's tour for the Road to Hana: the full drive takes 8–10 hours, the return alone two and a half to three hours, and Waiʻānapanapa needs a timed reservation, so it is hard to do independently and get back in time. A ship's tour is also the safer choice for Haleakalā if you are not confident driving a long mountain road with no guard rails. ʻĪao Valley, Wailuku and Paia are easy to do on your own with a rental car or taxi.
Setting off on the full Road to Hana on a normal port day.
Instead: The return alone takes two and a half to three hours. Go part of the way, or take a tour.
Driving to ʻĪao Valley or Waiʻānapanapa without a reservation.
Instead: Non-residents must book at gostateparks.hawaii.gov in advance; you will be turned away otherwise.
Booking a Haleakalā sunrise reservation for a day the ship only arrives in the morning.
Instead: Sunrise (03:00–07:00 entry) is only possible with an overnight call. Go in daytime instead; no reservation is needed.
Going up Haleakalā in beach clothes.
Instead: Take warm layers and water. The park says conditions around dawn and dusk are regularly wet, windy and below freezing, and nothing is sold in the park.
Treating Lahaina as a sightseeing stop for the fire damage.
Instead: Visit open businesses at the north end of Front Street and keep out of closed and fenced areas.
Kahului is safe for visitors; the main risks are on the road and in the water. The Haleakalā road has no streetlights or guard rails, and the Road to Hana is narrow with many one-lane bridges: use pullouts to let local drivers pass and take care on the way back when tired. Do not swim in fresh water with open cuts (leptospirosis is present), never cross a flooded road, and keep off private land along the Hana Highway. In Lahaina, follow all closure signs.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 911
Crowds
ʻĪao and Waiʻānapanapa control numbers with timed reservations, so book early for your date. Taxi and ride-hail demand spikes when a ship arrives; a pre-booked rental car or tour avoids the queue. At Haleakalā, parking is limited to set lots, which close when full; the Leleiwi and Kalahaku overlooks are quieter.
Accessibility
The walk from the ship to the port entrance is short and on a marked walkway, and licensed taxis can drive into the port. The ʻĪao Valley walk is paved. At Haleakalā the summit and overlooks are reached by car, with parking in designated lots. The Road to Hana is a long, winding drive of several hours each way.
If it rains
On a wet day, keep to Wailuku, Paia and Kahului, and avoid flooded roads and streams on the Hana Highway. Check the park weather page before driving up Haleakalā.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Kahului and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
