Open my full Hilo day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Hilo? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeHilo is a working harbour town on the wet, green side of the Island of Hawaii. Pier 1 is mainly a cargo port that also handles cruise ships, so the walk out is along an industrial road rather than a promenade. The reasons to come are close by: Japanese gardens on the bay, Rainbow Falls on the edge of town, a large farmers market and black-sand swimming at Richardson Ocean Park. The big draw, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, is about 45 minutes away by car, which makes it the day's main return risk. Expect rain at some point; Hilo is one of the rainier parts of Hawaii.
Walkable? Partly · about 40 min (3.2 km)
Liliuokalani Gardens is about 15 minutes on foot. Downtown is about 3.2 km and roughly 40 minutes' walk along a busy industrial road, so most people ride. Once downtown, the bayfront and market area is compact and easy on foot.

Agencies shuttle passengers to their airport offices. Allow at least an hour to collect the car at peak arrival times. Signal is patchy in the rainforest, so carry a paper map or offline maps.

Be back at Pier 1 60 minutes before all-aboard from Hilo town. From Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, leave the park at least 3 hours before all-aboard.
The park visit needs about four hours inside the boundaries to be worthwhile, plus 45 minutes each way, so it only fits a long call. Rain, road works and several ships in port at once can slow traffic back into Hilo. Return a rental car early enough for the agency shuttle back to the pier.
If you're running late
In town, take a taxi or ride-hail straight to the Pier 1 gate rather than waiting for a bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number in your daily programme at once.

Hilo town, Liliuokalani Gardens, Rainbow Falls and Richardson Ocean Park are easy to do yourself with a taxi or the free bus. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is where a ship tour earns its price: the drive is 45 minutes each way, the county bus is too infrequent for most calls, and the park needs about four hours. If you drive yourself, start early and leave the park 3 hours before all-aboard. Akaka Falls is a reasonable DIY drive of about 30 minutes, but part of its trail was closed in October 2026.
Trying to walk to downtown Hilo.
Instead: It is about 40 minutes along an industrial road. Walk to Liliuokalani Gardens and ride the rest.
Staying at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park too long.
Instead: Leave the park 3 hours before all-aboard. The drive is 45 minutes each way and traffic and rain slow it.
Taking cash to the national park or state parks.
Instead: Hawaii Volcanoes does not accept cash, and Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls are credit card only.
Relying on the county bus to reach the volcano.
Instead: Route 11 is very limited and may not fit your call. Use a rental car or a tour.
Assuming the farmers market is at full size every day.
Instead: It opens daily, but Wednesday and Saturday have more than twice as many stalls.
Hilo is a safe, relaxed town. The real hazards are natural. At Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, stay out of closed areas, watch air-quality alerts, and do not handle volcanic glass strands or ash. Closures can change at short notice after earthquakes. Expect heavy rain; trails and rocks get slippery. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty, such as Richardson Ocean Park, and keep a distance from turtles.

Crowds
When more than one ship is in, local roads, rental car counters and the Rainbow Falls car park get busy around midday. Book a rental car in advance, visit Rainbow Falls early, and reach the farmers market between 07:00 and 09:00 if you can. Liliuokalani Gardens is quietest straight after the ship clears.
Accessibility
The ship docks alongside, so there is no tender transfer. The area around the pier is a working harbour with traffic, and the walk to town is long. Rainbow Falls has a paved viewpoint a short distance from the car park, the best step-light waterfall view near Hilo. Liliuokalani Gardens is flat but has bridges and uneven paths. Akaka Falls requires some physical exertion on its loop path. Book accessible taxis in advance.
If it rains
Rain is normal in Hilo, so plan for it rather than around it. 'Imiloa Astronomy Center (closed Mondays) is the best indoor option, with a planetarium. Big Island Candies and the covered parts of the farmers market work well too. Rainbow Falls runs at its strongest after rain. At the national park, low cloud can hide the crater, so decide on the morning's weather.
