Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerNaha is a docking port with two cruise berths. At the Naha Cruise Terminal in Wakasa you can walk to the west end of Kokusai-dori in about 20 minutes; very large ships use the second cruise berth at Shinko Wharf, 5.6 km from the centre, where you need a shuttle bus or taxi. Leave Kokusai-dori 80 minutes before all-aboard if your ship is at Wakasa, and 90 minutes before if it is at Shinko.

Status and sourcesNaha is Okinawa's capital and its cruise calls split between two very different berths. The Naha Cruise Terminal at Wakasa (Tomari Wharf No. 8) is a proper terminal with immigration, Wi-Fi and a tourist desk, a walk from the city. Ships too large for it, up to the 230,000-ton class, use the second cruise berth at Shinko Wharf No. 12, a cargo area with a tent instead of a terminal and no monorail nearby. Check your berth before you plan anything. The core day is Kokusai-dori, the Makishi Public Market and the Naminoue Shrine; Shuri Castle is the main trip out by monorail or taxi.
Walkable? Partly · about 20 min (1.5 km)
From the Wakasa terminal, the city centre and the west end of Kokusai-dori are about 1.5 km, a 15–20 minute walk on city streets. From the Shinko berth, 5.6 km out in a cargo port, walking is not realistic.
Where your ship docks
On foot (ship at Wakasa)
Free15–20 min to Kencho-mae and the west end of Kokusai-dori
The simplest option at Wakasa. Kencho-mae monorail station is about 15 minutes' walk, and Kokusai-dori starts beside it.
Shuttle bus (ship at Shinko)
Depends on the ship; check your daily programme15–20 min by road
The port's own berth data says a shuttle is required at Shinko Wharf because there is no monorail and the berth is 5.6 km from the city. Who runs it and whether it is free varies by call; confirm with your ship before going ashore.
Tokyo Bus TK01 / TK02 (stop by Wakasa terminal)
Fare not confirmed for this stop; cash or contactless credit card, no transit IC cards (2026)Varies; check the timetable
Since 20 August 2026 the TK01 Hurley Express and TK02 Umikaji Liner stop at Naminoue Beach (Naha Cruise Terminal), in front of the MaxValu Wakasa store on Wakasa Naka-dori. The routes link to the Kokusai-dori entrance and Naha Airport. Suica-type cards are not accepted on these routes.
Taxi
MeteredAbout 10 min to Kokusai-dori from Wakasa; 15–20 min from Shinko
Taxis wait at both berths, but queues form when a whole ship disembarks at once, and late-afternoon shift changes have left passengers waiting in the past.
Yui Rail monorail
1-day pass ¥800 (24 hours); 2-day pass ¥1,400 (2026)Kencho-mae is the nearest station to Wakasa, about 15 min on foot
Use it for Shuri Castle: ride to Shuri station, then walk about 15 minutes or take bus 7 or 8 (Shuri Castle Town Line, ¥150) for about 5 minutes. Suica and other national IC cards and the local OKICA card work. Passes also give discounts at Shuri Castle.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Ship at Wakasa: leave Kokusai-dori 80 minutes before all-aboard (16:10 for a 17:30 all-aboard). Ship at Shinko: be at the shuttle stop 90 minutes before (16:00). From Shuri Castle, leave 90 minutes before by taxi.
The walk from Kokusai-dori to Wakasa takes up to 20 minutes, and you should be on board an hour before all-aboard. At Shinko you depend on a shuttle or a taxi queue serving a whole large ship, so allow more. Naha traffic is heavy at peak times and around festivals.
If you're running late
From anywhere in central Naha, take a taxi and say which berth: Wakasa cruise terminal or Shinko Wharf. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme. The 24-hour Japan Visitor Hotline is 050-3816-2787.
Assumes the ship docks at Wakasa at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30. At Shinko, add the shuttle each way and be at the shuttle stop by 16:00.
08:30 Walk from the terminal to the Naminoue Shrine on its cliff above the beach. Mornings are quieter.
09:15 Walk on to Kencho-mae station and buy a monorail 1-day pass (¥800).
09:30 Monorail to Shuri, then walk about 15 minutes, or take bus 7 or 8, to Shuri Castle.
09:50 Shuri Castle paid area (¥400). Then walk the stone-paved Kinjo-cho street, about 19 minutes from Shuri station on foot.
12:00 Monorail back to Makishi. Lunch on the second floor of the Makishi Public Market: Okinawa soba or goya champloo.
13:30 Kokusai-dori and its side arcades, about a 2-minute walk from the market.
15:30 Optional swim or rest at Naminoue Beach (free, open 09:00–18:00 in season), near the terminal.
16:10 If you stayed on Kokusai-dori, start walking back to the Wakasa terminal now.
16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Kokusai-dori, the market and the Naminoue Shrine are easy on your own, especially from Wakasa. Shuri Castle is also simple by monorail. The ship's tour earns its price for anything in the north of the island, such as the Churaumi Aquarium, which the port lists at 90–110 minutes each way by expressway: on a single day the traffic risk is real. At Shinko, a ship tour also takes away the shuttle and taxi queue problem.
Assuming the ship is at the Wakasa terminal and planning to walk.
Instead: Check your berth. Very large ships use Shinko Wharf, 5.6 km out with no terminal building and no monorail, where you need a shuttle or taxi.
Counting on the city's cruise shuttle from Wakasa to Kokusai-dori.
Instead: The ¥240 trial service was confirmed only to 31 March 2026 and ran on request from cruise lines. Plan to walk; treat any shuttle as a bonus.
Joining the taxi queue with the whole ship.
Instead: Walk from Wakasa, or let the first wave go before queuing. Coming back, leave early rather than relying on finding a taxi at 16:00.
Tapping a Suica or OKICA card on the Tokyo Bus TK01/TK02 routes.
Instead: These routes take cash or contactless credit cards only. IC cards are fine on the monorail.
Planning the market lunch on the fourth Sunday of the month.
Instead: The Makishi Public Market closes on the 4th Sunday (except December), plus New Year, Lunar New Year and Obon.
Naha is a safe city with low street crime. The bigger risks are weather and heat. Typhoon season runs from June to December and peaks from July to September; follow Japan Meteorological Agency warnings, because ships may change schedule or leave early. Okinawa is hot and humid in summer and shade is limited around the shrine and beach, so carry water and sun protection. Japan is an earthquake zone; follow tsunami instructions from local staff if alerts sound.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 110 (police), 119 (ambulance and fire)
Crowds
Naha is busiest in July and August, Golden Week, Obon (around 13–16 August) and the New Year holidays. The Naha Great Tug-of-War festival in October fills the centre on its weekend. If two ships are in, one at Wakasa and one at Shinko, taxis run short. Go to Shuri Castle early and leave Kokusai-dori for the afternoon.
Accessibility
The Wakasa terminal has a boarding bridge on some ships, a rain shelter and a two-storey building. The walk to Kokusai-dori is on city pavements; a taxi is the easier option. The Shinko berth has no terminal building and only temporary toilets, so check with the ship about accessible transfers. The monorail is the step-free way to Shuri, but the walk from Shuri station to the castle and the stone-paved Kinjo-cho lane are uphill and uneven.
If it rains
Spend the day under cover: the Makishi Public Market and the covered arcades off Kokusai-dori work well in rain. The Wakasa terminal has a rain shelter; at Shinko there is only a tent. Typhoons may close Naminoue Beach and change the ship's schedule.
