Hakodate Cruise Port

Quick answerMost ships dock at Wakamatsu Wharf, near JR Hakodate Station and within walking distance of the Morning Market; the biggest ships use Minato-cho Wharf, about 6.5 km and a 20-minute drive from the centre, with shuttle buses into town. From the station, trams reach Goryokaku and the Mount Hakodate ropeway area for ¥210–260 a ride or ¥600 for a 1-day pass. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, and board the shuttle back from town 90 minutes before if you are at Minato-cho.

Transport: Port of Hakodate (Wakamatsu Wharf / Minato-cho Wharf) to Hakodate Station and Bay Area

Hakodate is a compact port city at the southern tip of Hokkaido. The main cruise berth, Wakamatsu Wharf, sits beside the station district, with the Morning Market, the Bay Area warehouses and the tram network all close by. Larger ships berth at Minato-cho, further out, and rely on shuttles or taxis. The headline sights are the Mount Hakodate ropeway, the star-shaped Goryokaku fort and the slopes of Motomachi. Note that the ropeway is closed for maintenance from 20 October to 8 November 2026.

Walkable? Partly · about 20 min (1.5 km)

From Wakamatsu Wharf you can walk to the Morning Market, the station area and the Bay Area. Goryokaku and the ropeway need a tram or taxi. From Minato-cho you need the shuttle or a taxi for everything.

Where your ship docks

  • Wakamatsu Wharf (Hakodate Cruise Terminal) · 1.5 km to the centre — The main cruise berth, next to the Mashu Maru museum ship and near JR Hakodate Station. About 1.5 km, roughly a 20-minute walk, from the main sightseeing areas. The terminal opened in 2022 and is open to passengers only when a ship is in. City planning documents name the Diamond Princess (115,875 GT) as its largest target ship. Used for about 56 of 75 calls in the 2026 schedule.
  • Minato-cho Wharf (larger ships) · 6.5 km to the centre — Used by the largest ships, such as MSC Bellissima, Spectrum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas. About 6.5 km and a 20-minute drive from the central sightseeing areas. Shuttle buses run into town; walking is not practical.
  • West (Nishi) Wharf (small ships) — For ships under 30,000 GT. About 15 minutes by tram to JR Hakodate Station.

The Morning Market is next to JR Hakodate Station, a few minutes from the Hakodate-Ekimae tram stop. The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses are about a 15-minute walk from the station.

From Jujigai tram stop, about a 7-minute uphill walk. Open 10:00–21:00 from 1 October to 19 April, 10:00–22:00 from 20 April to 30 September. Closed for maintenance 20 October to 8 November 2026.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. If your ship is at Minato-cho, board the shuttle back from town at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

From Wakamatsu Wharf the return is a walk, so the risk is low. At Minato-cho you depend on the shuttle schedule and road traffic, and queues build for the last buses. From Goryokaku, allow for the tram, the walk to the stop and the walk back to the berth.

If you're running late

Take a taxi from Goryokaku or the station area straight to your berth. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number in your daily programme straight away.

A one-day plan for Hakodate (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at Wakamatsu Wharf at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:15 Walk from the cruise terminal to the Hakodate Morning Market by JR Hakodate Station.

  2. 08:30 Breakfast in Donburi Yokocho: a seafood rice bowl, or catch a squid at the fishing stall in Ekini Ichiba.

  3. 10:00 Buy a ¥600 1-day tram pass and ride from Hakodate-Ekimae to Goryokaku-Koen-mae, about 17 minutes.

  4. 10:30 Goryokaku Tower (¥1,200) for the view of the star fort, then walk the park and the Magistrate's Office grounds.

  5. 12:30 Tram back to Jujigai. Lunch in the Bay Area.

  6. 13:30 Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses, then walk up the Motomachi slopes.

  7. 15:00 Ropeway up Mount Hakodate if it is open (7-minute walk from Jujigai, 3-minute ride).

  8. 16:00 Tram or walk back towards the station and the berth.

  9. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

From Wakamatsu Wharf, Hakodate is easy alone: walk to the Morning Market and the Bay Area, and take the tram to Goryokaku and the ropeway. A ship tour makes more sense if you are berthed at Minato-cho and do not want to depend on shuttles, or if you want to go further out. If the ropeway is closed, as it is from 20 October to 8 November 2026, tours may drive up Mount Hakodate by coach instead, which is hard to arrange alone.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Hakodate

Planning the ropeway between 20 October and 8 November 2026.

Instead: It is closed for maintenance. Use Goryokaku Tower for a high view, or take a ship tour that drives to the summit.

Assuming you can walk into town from any berth.

Instead: Check your berth. Wakamatsu is walkable; Minato-cho is about 6.5 km out and needs a shuttle or taxi.

Reaching the Morning Market at lunchtime.

Instead: Go first thing. It opens early and many stalls close around midday.

Paying tram fares with a large note.

Instead: The fare box gives no change. Use an IC card, the 1-day pass, or the change machine before your stop.

Relying on cards everywhere.

Instead: Carry yen cash for trams, market stalls and small shops; larger businesses take cards.

Safety: is Hakodate safe for cruise passengers?

Hakodate is a safe city for visitors. The main hazards are traffic and tram tracks, steep and sometimes slippery slopes in Motomachi, and weather: July to September is the rainiest period, and winter brings snow and ice. Use official taxis and confirm the fare before you set off.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Unofficial taxi touts near the port: use licensed taxis and confirm the fare before departure.

Emergency number: 110 (police), 119 (fire and ambulance)

Practical information

Crowds

Seven 2026 calls are on days with two ships in port. On those days the Morning Market fills early and Goryokaku Tower queues build mid-morning. Go to the market as soon as you are ashore, and visit Goryokaku before the tour coaches arrive or after lunch.

Accessibility

Wakamatsu Wharf, the station area, the Morning Market and the Bay Area are flat. Motomachi is steep. Goryokaku Park is large and walking distances are long. Holland America says its Hakodate tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility. Check tram accessibility with the operator before relying on it.

If it rains

Stay around the Morning Market, the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses and Goryokaku Tower, which are mostly under cover. Skip the Motomachi slopes and, in low cloud, the ropeway.
