Nagasaki Cruise Port

Quick answerNagasaki is a docking port: most ships berth at the Matsugae International Terminal, in town below Glover Garden. You can walk to Glover Garden, Oura Cathedral and Chinatown in 5–15 minutes, and the Oura Kaigan-dori tram stop is 3 minutes away for the Peace Park (¥150 a ride). Leave the Peace Park area 90 minutes before all-aboard and the Glover Garden area 60–75 minutes before.

Transport: Port of Nagasaki (Matsugae International Terminal) to central Nagasaki

Nagasaki's cruise terminal sits on the harbour in the old foreign quarter, so Glover Garden, Oura Cathedral and Chinatown are all on foot. The Peace Park, the hypocentre and the Atomic Bomb Museum are in the north of the city and need the tram or a taxi. The port has one large cruise berth at Matsugae; a second berth extending it south is being built, so on busy days a smaller ship may be sent to the Tokiwa-Dejima pier nearby or, on Sundays, to Kosakaki-Yanagi further down the harbour. Note the April 2026 fee changes at city-run sights.

Walkable? Yes · about 15 min

From Matsugae, Oura Cathedral and Glover Garden are about 10–15 minutes uphill, Chinatown 5–10 minutes and Dejima 10–15 minutes on the flat. The Peace Park and the Atomic Bomb Museum are too far for most cruise walkers; use the tram.

Where your ship docks

  • Matsugae International Terminal (Matsugae Pier) — Main cruise berth, built for ships up to about 160,000 GT. Two terminal buildings, an information space, free Wi-Fi and a one-day tram pass on sale. Oura Kaigan-dori tram stop is about 3 minutes' walk; JR Nagasaki station about 10 minutes by taxi. A second berth, 410 m extending the quay south, is under construction; a 2022 government evaluation put completion in fiscal 2028.
  • Tokiwa-Dejima pier — Smaller cruise berth for ships of about 70,000 GT and under, about 6 minutes' walk from Matsugae. Used when two ships are in.
  • Kosakaki-Yanagi wharf — Cargo wharf further down the harbour, available to cruise ships on Sundays only. If your ship is here, ask the ship how you reach the city before you go ashore.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Leave the Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum area 90 minutes before all-aboard (16:00 for 17:30). Leave Glover Garden, Chinatown or Dejima 60–75 minutes before (by 16:15).

The tram to the north of the city needs a change at Shinchi Chinatown and trams can be full when several ships are in. The foreign-quarter sights are a short walk from the terminal, so only allow the walk plus an hour on board.

If you're running late

Take a taxi from any main street and say Matsugae cruise terminal. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme. The 24-hour Japan Visitor Hotline is 050-3816-2787.

Nagasaki is one of the easiest ports in Japan to do alone: the old foreign quarter is on the doorstep and the tram reaches everything else. The ship's tour is worth it for Gunkanjima (Hashima), which needs a booked boat and is weather-dependent, and for anything outside the city. If your ship is at Kosakaki-Yanagi, a tour or ship transport also solves getting into town.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Nagasaki

Trying to walk to the Peace Park and Atomic Bomb Museum.

Instead: They are in the north of the city. Take tram 5 then tram 1 with a change at Shinchi Chinatown, or a taxi.

Planning with pre-2026 prices.

Instead: Nagasaki City revised fees on 1 April 2026; Glover Garden is now ¥1,300 for adults. The Atomic Bomb Museum stayed at ¥200.

Doing the Peace Park last and racing back.

Instead: Go north in the morning and finish near the terminal at Glover Garden, Dejima or Chinatown.

Assuming every ship uses Matsugae.

Instead: When two ships are in, one may use the Tokiwa-Dejima pier nearby or, on Sundays, Kosakaki-Yanagi further out. Check your berth.

Expecting a cruise shuttle into town.

Instead: None is usually needed or provided at Matsugae; walk or use the tram.

Safety: is Nagasaki safe for cruise passengers?

Nagasaki is safe and calm for visitors. The main hazards are the steep slopes around Glover Garden and Oura in heat or rain, and typhoons, which peak from July to September and can change the ship's schedule. Japan drives on the left, so look the right way when crossing. Japan is an earthquake zone; follow staff instructions if tsunami alerts sound.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Bar overcharging: the UK government reports disputes over very large bar bills in Japan. Check prices and any cover charge before ordering.
  • Street touts: touting is illegal but happens in nightlife areas. Do not follow a tout into a bar.
  • Drink spiking with card fraud: reported in Japanese nightlife districts. Do not leave drinks unattended.

Emergency number: 110 (police), 119 (ambulance and fire)

Practical information

Crowds

Several ships can call on the same day in autumn. Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral fill with tour groups from mid-morning, so go first thing. The Atomic Bomb Museum is busiest around 9 August. Trams back towards Shinchi Chinatown get crowded in the late afternoon.

Accessibility

The Matsugae terminal is level, with an automatic door, a ramp and lift to the roof lawn, a 24-hour accessible toilet and wheelchair rental. The tram stop is 3 minutes away. Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral are on a steep hill, so a taxi to the top entrance area helps. Shikairo, next to the terminal, has lifts and an accessible toilet. Trams vary; some are low-floor.

If it rains

Spend more time in the Atomic Bomb Museum and the reconstructed Dejima buildings, and have a long lunch in Chinatown or at Shikairo, which has a free champon museum on its second floor. Glover Garden's slopes are slippery in rain.
