Ashore from 08:30, as in our day plan. Port time.

Quick answer: Kobe is a docking port with two terminals: Kobe Port Terminal on Shinko Pier No. 4 and Naka Pier by Meriken Park. From Port Terminal the Port Liner reaches Sannomiya in about 5 minutes for ¥210. Be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard after a day in Kobe and 90 minutes before after a train trip.

Kobe is an easy port to use on your own. Both terminals are close to the city, and Japan's rail network puts Osaka about 22 minutes from Sannomiya and Himeji about 40 minutes. The first thing to check is your berth, because the way back differs. Port Terminal sits on top of a Port Liner station. Naka Pier is a walk from the stations, but it sits beside Meriken Park and Kobe Port Tower. Ships over 77,000 tons use Port Terminal. The long trips are the real risk: Himeji or Kyoto can eat most of your day, so work out your leave-by time before you go.

Plan this day to my ship

Where the ship docks

  • Kobe Port Terminal (Shinko Pier No. 4) · 2.1 km to the centre

The main terminal, with berths on both sides of the pier and capacity for ships up to 230,000 tons on berths Q1 and Q2. Port Terminal station on the Port Liner is right next to it. It stands at the north end of the Kobe Ohashi bridge to Port Island, on the city side. It is not on Port Island itself, although the Port Liner continues there and the tourist board files it under that area. Spectrum of the Seas, Westerdam, Norwegian Jade and Carnival Luminosa are on the 2026 schedule here. Smaller ships can use either terminal: Azamara Pursuit and Asuka II appear at both in 2026.

  • Naka Pier Cruise Terminal · 1.2 km to the centre

A single 305 m berth for ships up to the 77,000-ton class, on the two lower floors of the Kobe Meriken Park Oriental Hotel building. No Port Liner here. Silver Moon and Asuka III are on the 2026 schedule here. Distance is to JR Motomachi station, for the old town side of the centre.

Can you walk? Partly, about 25 min. From Port Terminal, Sannomiya is about 2.1 km and 25 minutes on foot, but nearly everyone takes the 5-minute Port Liner. From Naka Pier you can walk everywhere nearby: Minato-Motomachi subway station about 9 minutes, JR Motomachi about 15 minutes, JR Kobe station about 16 minutes.

When to head back

Be on board 60 minutes before all-aboard after a day in Kobe, and 90 minutes before after a train trip. For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave Sannomiya by 16:15 for Port Terminal, or Motomachi by 16:15 for Naka Pier.

Leave-by times, measured before all-aboard: Sannomiya 75 minutes if your ship is at Port Terminal, 85 minutes if it is at Naka Pier; Motomachi 75 minutes if at Naka Pier; Osaka Station 135 minutes; Kyoto Station 170 minutes; Himeji Castle gate 170 minutes. Those include a 15-minute allowance for changing trains at Sannomiya. A Kyoto temple is further out than Kyoto Station, so add your bus or taxi time to the station on top.

If you are running late: If you are running late in Kobe, take a taxi from the nearest station straight to your terminal. From Osaka, Kyoto or Himeji stay on JR to Sannomiya, then take a taxi if the Port Liner queue is long. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

Where people go wrong: Passengers plan around the Port Liner and then find their ship is at Naka Pier, which has no Port Liner station.

On your own or a ship excursion?

Skip the ship tour for Kobe itself. Trains, signs and terminals make the city easy on your own. A ship tour earns its price for Kyoto on a day of less than about nine hours, because the trip to Kyoto Station alone takes about 75 minutes each way and the sights are further on. Himeji is fine on your own on a long call if you start early, but the keep queue can reach an hour at busy times, so a ship tour is the calmer choice on a short day. Osaka is an easy independent trip.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming your ship is at Port Terminal.

Check the berth first. Naka Pier has no Port Liner, so a wrong plan costs about 20 minutes on the way back.

  • Leaving for Himeji late.

Last castle entry is 16:00 and the return needs 170 minutes before all-aboard. Be on a train from Sannomiya by about 09:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

  • Treating Kyoto Station as if it were the sights.

Kyoto Station is 170 minutes from all-aboard on its own. Add your bus or taxi time from any temple, or book the ship's tour.

  • Carrying only a card.

Take yen. Cards are used mainly for larger purchases here. ATMs with English menus are at 7-Eleven stores.

  • Forgetting the ropeway closes early on weekdays.

Outside summer, the last ride up on weekdays is 16:45. In practice, go in the morning on a port day.

Safety, access and bad weather

Safety
Kobe is a calm, orderly city, and the normal risks are heat, rain and sore feet. Japan has earthquakes and typhoons, so follow crew and station staff if an alert sounds. The tourism agency recommends the Safety tips app for visitors. In an emergency dial 110 for police or 119 for ambulance and fire. The Japan Visitor Hotline (050-3816-2787) answers all day. Ships on a designated cruise scheme may land passengers without a visa through the captain or carrier, for sightseeing only, up to 30 days, or 7 days if Japan is a single-port call, and you must return to the ship before it sails. Your line confirms whether your ship is designated and what papers you carry ashore. Emergency number: 110 police; 119 ambulance and fire.
Scams to know
  • Beef sold as Kobe beef that is not certified. Look for the chrysanthemum mark, a membership certificate or the bronze cow statue at the entrance.
Accessibility
Port Terminal has two mobile, accessible boarding bridges and sits next to its Port Liner station, so it is the easier berth. Naka Pier has one accessible boarding bridge, but it is a longer walk to the stations. Himeji Castle is hard going: wheelchair users cannot visit alone because of steep slopes, can reach Bizenmaru with two or three experienced carers, and cannot enter the buildings. There is no accessible toilet inside the paid area. Visitors with a disability certificate and one carer enter free.
If it rains
Stay in the city. Kobe Maritime Museum (¥900) is by the waterfront and Kobe City Museum (¥300) is in the centre. Sannomiya Center Gai is a covered shopping arcade near the station. A rainy day is also the day to go to Osaka by train, because a station-to-station trip keeps you mostly dry. Skip the ropeway in wind or thunder, as it can close.
Crowds
Kobe is less crowded than Osaka or Kyoto, and restaurants rarely have long waits. The pressure point is Himeji, where April is the busiest month and the keep's queue can reach an hour.
