Koper Cruise Port to the Old Town: Walk, Bus or Tour
Quick answer: Ships berth alongside at the Port of Koper Passenger Terminal, about 300 m from Tito Square (Titov trg). You walk into the Old Town in about 5 minutes, so you need no transport for Koper itself. For Piran, the Arriva bus from the Koper Tržnica stop runs roughly every 20 minutes and takes about 45–50 minutes. Ljubljana and the caves are over an hour inland, so a tour or pre-booked transfer is safer. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from the Old Town, and back in Koper 90 minutes before all-aboard from anywhere further.
Koper is Slovenia's cruise port, and the berth sits at the foot of the old Venetian town. The Old Town takes two or three hours. Most passengers then use the rest of the day for Piran on the coast, or for Ljubljana or one of the karst caves inland.
Where the cruise ships dock
Passenger Terminal, Port of Koper (Luka Koper). A new terminal building opened on 27 May 2025, next to the Old Town. The cruise quay takes one ship at a time, up to 350 m long, so the town rarely feels as crowded as larger Adriatic ports. Tito Square is about 0.3 km away.
Koper is not a tender port. Ships berth alongside at the passenger quay. Some smaller ships anchor off Piran instead; this post covers the Koper berth.
Walking to Tito Square
- ·Cost: free.
- ·Time: about 5 minutes to Tito Square.
- ·Route: walk from the terminal into the Old Town and uphill through the narrow lanes to the main square.
The streets are narrow, paved and mostly car-free, with a gentle climb to the square. Everything in the Old Town is within 10–15 minutes on foot. The stone paving can be slippery, and the slight uphill matters if you have limited mobility.
What is within walking distance
- ·Tito Square (Titov trg): the main square, with the Praetorian Palace and the Loggia café.
- ·Cathedral of the Assumption and bell tower: 204 steps (stairs only) and views over the Gulf of Koper. Tickets via the tourist information centre.
- ·Prešeren Square, the Da Ponte Fountain and the Muda Gate: a short walk down towards the sea.
- ·Koper City Beach (Mestna plaža): a Blue Flag pebble beach a few minutes on foot from the Old Town.
- ·Žusterna: about 10–15 minutes' walk along the coast.
Arriva bus to Piran
Piran is the easiest trip out of Koper and does not need a tour.
- ·Where to board: the Koper Tržnica (market) stop. Ask at the terminal or the tourist information centre for directions to it.
- ·Frequency: roughly every 20 minutes.
- ·Time: about 45–50 minutes, calling at Izola and Portorož on the way.
- ·Fare: a low single fare. Check the current price at the stop or the tourist information centre.
- ·Gotcha: the bus passes through Izola and Portorož traffic, so allow the full 50 minutes for the return. Aim for a bus that gets you back to Koper at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Bus or train to Ljubljana
- ·Bus: Arriva runs about hourly from Koper to Ljubljana bus station. The journey takes about 1 hour 30 minutes.
- ·Train: about 2 hours 40 minutes, and only about four trains a day.
- ·Fare: check current fares with Arriva or Slovenske železnice.
A round trip leaves only a few hours in the capital. Most passengers take a ship or private tour, which is the safer way to make all-aboard.
Bus or train to Postojna Cave
- ·Bus: about 1 hour 15 minutes, with buses roughly every four hours.
- ·Train: about 1 hour 25 minutes, about three a day.
- ·Cave ticket: €34.90 adult (2026). Allow about 1.5 hours in the cave.
Because direct services are infrequent, an independent cave trip is hard to time against all-aboard. A tour or a pre-booked transfer is the safer choice.
Škocjan Caves
Tickets cost €16–24 for adults depending on the month (2026). Tours run at fixed times, from 10:00 most of the year, and take 2.5–3 hours plus travel. Use a ship tour or a pre-booked transfer.

When to head back
The rule from the port guide: be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard if you stay in Koper. If you go to Piran, be on a bus that reaches Koper 90 minutes before all-aboard. Inland trips should also be back in Koper 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Common mistakes
- ·Trying to fit Ljubljana and a cave into one call by public transport. Pick one, and use a ship tour or pre-booked transfer for anything inland.
- ·Arriving at Postojna or Škocjan without checking tour times. Both caves run fixed guided tours. Book a slot that leaves enough time to get back to Koper.
- ·Taking the last convenient bus back from Piran. The bus can take 50 minutes. Aim to be back in Koper 90 minutes before all-aboard.
- ·Skipping Koper itself. The Old Town needs only an hour or two and starts at the gangway. See it first, then head out.
