Trieste Cruise Port to the City Centre: Walk, Bus or Taxi
Quick answer: Most ships berth at the Stazione Marittima on Molo dei Bersaglieri, about 200 m from Piazza Unità d'Italia. You walk into the centre in 2–5 minutes along the flat waterfront, so you need no transport for the city itself. Bus 6 runs to Miramare Castle, 8 km north-west. Be back at the terminal 60 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Miramare or Opicina at least 2 hours before it.
Trieste is one of the easiest docked ports in the Adriatic. The main square, the Canal Grande and the café streets of Borgo Teresiano are all a few minutes from the ship. The one thing to check before you go ashore is which pier your ship is at.
Where the cruise ships dock
Stazione Marittima (Molo dei Bersaglieri 3). This is where most ships berth. It is run by Trieste Terminal Passeggeri, which describes it as having two cruise berths, so up to two large ships can be alongside at once. Piazza Unità d'Italia is about 0.2 km away, 2–5 minutes on foot. Taxis wait at the terminal.
Pier 57 (Trieste Marine Terminal, Via della Rampa). Some sailings, including some Norwegian Cruise Line calls, have been assigned this industrial berth instead. It is not a sensible walk. Use a taxi or the ship's shuttle if one is offered. Your cruise documents will say which pier you are at.
Trieste is not a tender port. Ships berth alongside on the city waterfront.
Walking to Piazza Unità
- ·Cost: free.
- ·Time: 2–5 minutes to Piazza Unità d'Italia.
- ·Route: turn along the flat waterfront (the Rive) to Piazza Unità.
From Piazza Unità you can reach the Canal Grande, Borgo Teresiano, the Roman Theatre and the climb to San Giusto on foot. Trieste Centrale railway station is about 15 minutes' walk from the terminal.
The waterfront, the square, the Canal Grande and Borgo Teresiano are level. The old town and San Giusto hill rise directly behind Piazza Unità on steep lanes and steps, which are hard going for wheelchair users and can be slippery. If your ship is at Pier 57, do not plan to walk.
What is within walking distance
- ·Piazza Unità d'Italia: a large square open to the sea. It also works as a last stop before reboarding.
- ·Molo Audace: a pier opposite the square, with views back over the city.
- ·Canal Grande and Borgo Teresiano: the 18th-century grid district a few minutes north of the square. A good café and lunch area.
- ·Roman Theatre: a 1st-century AD theatre, free to view from the street, where the climb to San Giusto starts.
Bus 6 to Miramare Castle
Miramare Castle, on a headland about 8 km up the coast, is the one sight that needs a bus, taxi or boat.
- ·Where to board: near the railway station at the stop "viale Miramare 5 (piazza Libertà, FS)".
- ·Where to get off: "SS 14 Centro di fisica, castello Miramare".
- ·How to pay: tap a contactless card or phone on the on-board device.
- ·Fare: the TPL FVG urban fare. Check the current price on the tplfvg.it site or at a ticket outlet.
- ·Gotcha: in summer bus 6 gets very crowded and you may have to wait for the next one. Boarding earlier on the route, on Via Carducci or Via Battisti, helps.
The castle opens daily 09:00–19:00, with last tickets at 18:30. The museum and exhibition ticket is €17, the park is free, and entry is free on the first Sunday of the month and for under-18s (2026). The park closes at 17:00 from 15 to 31 October and at 16:00 in November and December. Electric shuttles run inside the park to the castle and the upper park.
Boats: Delfino Verde and the Muggia line
Boats leave from Riva Nazario Sauro on the waterfront.
- ·Summer line: in 2026 the Delfino Verde line to Barcola, Grignano (for Miramare) and Sistiana runs from 25 April to 4 October.
- ·Muggia line: the Trieste–Muggia boat runs all year.
- ·Tickets: fares are set by the region for 2026. Buy them on board, on the operator's website or in the GlimbleFVG app.
- ·Timetable: check the published timetable before you rely on a return sailing.
From the Grignano stop it is about 15 minutes' walk uphill to the Miramare area, or you can take bus 6.
The Opicina tram (line 2)
The historic tram to the Karst plateau reopened on 27 July 2026 after years of closure. For now it starts from Piazza Dalmazia, not Piazza Oberdan, which is being redeveloped. Only seated passengers are allowed inside the car, so queues are possible. The fare is a TPL FVG fare; check it, and the current timetable, before travelling.
Taxi
Taxis wait at the terminal. They are metered, so ask the driver for an estimate first. From Trieste Centrale to the terminal takes about 4 minutes. On days with two ships in port, give the driver your ship name and the pier name. A taxi is the right choice if your ship is at Pier 57, or if you are cutting it fine at Miramare.
Options compared
| Option | Cost | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk | Free | 2–5 min to Piazza Unità | The city centre, Canal Grande, San Giusto |
| Bus 6 | TPL FVG urban fare | Allow for summer crowding | Miramare Castle |
| Delfino Verde boat | Regional 2026 fare | Check timetable | Barcola, Grignano, Sistiana (25 April–4 October 2026) |
| Opicina tram | TPL FVG fare | Check timetable | The Karst plateau |
| Taxi | Metered; ask first | About 4 min Centrale to terminal | Pier 57, a late return from Miramare |
When to head back
The rule is simple: be back at the terminal 60 minutes before all-aboard if you stay in the city. If you go to Miramare or Opicina, leave there at least 2 hours before all-aboard.
The centre is so close that the main risk is losing track of time in a café. Bus 6 can be full in summer, and the Opicina tram runs with limited capacity. If your ship is at Pier 57, add time for the taxi or shuttle back.
| All-aboard | Leave Piazza Unità | Leave Trieste Centrale / Borgo Teresiano | Leave Miramare or Opicina |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16:00 | 14:55 | 14:45 | 14:00 |
| 17:30 | 16:25 | 16:15 | 15:30 |
| 19:00 | 17:55 | 17:45 | 17:00 |
If you are running late at Miramare, take a taxi back to the Stazione Marittima rather than waiting for a full bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
For a stop-by-stop day, see the full Trieste port guide, or plan your day with your own all-aboard time.
Common mistakes
- ·Assuming your ship is at the Stazione Marittima. Most are, but some sailings use Pier 57, which is industrial and not walkable. Check your cruise documents.
- ·Expecting to walk to St Mark's. Trieste is about two hours from Venice by road. Treat a Venice trip as a full-day ship excursion or skip it.
- ·Leaving Miramare on the last bus that should just make it. Bus 6 fills up in summer. Leave at least 2 hours before all-aboard, or take a taxi.
- ·Going to Piazza Oberdan for the Opicina tram. Since the July 2026 reopening the tram starts from Piazza Dalmazia.
- ·Planning the San Giusto castle for a Monday. The castle museum is closed on Mondays; it opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00–16:30. Miramare opens daily.
