Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock alongside at Invergordon, a 5–10 minute walk from the High Street and its murals. Inverness is about 40 km away: ScotRail gives an average of 1 hour 13 minutes with up to four trains a day and returns from £19.10 (2026), and Stagecoach's X25 bus runs roughly hourly in the daytime. Be back on board 90 minutes before all-aboard if you go to Inverness, and check the return times before you leave.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeInvergordon is a small town on the Cromarty Firth, north of Inverness, and the Port of Cromarty Firth's cruise season in 2026 runs from April to mid-October with around 95 calls. The town itself takes an hour or two: a mural trail and a children's Duck Trail along the High Street, a small museum and cafés. Most passengers use the call to reach Inverness, Loch Ness, Culloden or Dunrobin Castle, all of which need a coach, a train or a taxi. Public transport is thin, so a do-it-yourself day needs planning around the return times.
Walkable? Yes · about 10 min
The port says the town centre is a 5–10 minute walk. Invergordon station is about a 10–12 minute walk from the port. Inverness, Loch Ness and the castles are not walkable.

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from the town, and 90 minutes before from Inverness, Loch Ness, Culloden or Dunrobin. By train or bus, choose a service that reaches Invergordon at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Invergordon itself is low risk. The risk is the return from Inverness: trains run only a few times a day, so missing one can leave a gap of hours. Buses are more frequent but still about hourly. Check the return times the day before the call.
If you're running late
If you miss your train or bus in Inverness, take a taxi to the port (about 40 minutes by road) and call the port agent number in your daily programme.

For Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, Dunrobin or a Culloden-and-Inverness combination, the ship's tour or a pre-booked private tour is the practical choice: these places are spread out, public transport is sparse, and the ship waits for its own coaches. Inverness alone is fine by train or bus if the return times fit your call. Skip a tour for Invergordon itself: the murals and the Duck Trail are free and start at the quayside.
Assuming trains to Inverness run often.
Instead: ScotRail lists up to four trains a day. Check the return times before you leave the ship, or use the X25 bus.

Instead: Agree a fixed price and the return time before you set off.
Invergordon and Inverness are low-crime places for visitors. The practical risks are the weather, which can turn cold, wet and windy quickly, and the return journey from Inverness on infrequent public transport. Roads to Loch Ness and the north are mainly two-lane, so allow for slow traffic behind coaches. In an emergency call 999 or 112.

Crowds
Invergordon's cruise season runs from April to mid-October, and most ships arrive between 07:00 and 10:00 and leave between 16:00 and 20:00. Excursion coaches leave in waves after arrival. If you are going to Inverness by train, the few trains can fill on busy ship days, so be at the station early. Book Urquhart Castle and Glenmorangie tours in advance.
Accessibility
The walk from the berths to the High Street is short. At Culloden there is level access from the main entrance to the ticket desk, café and shop, free wheelchairs, an accessible toilet, disabled parking and a hearing loop. Dunrobin Castle is not fully accessible; wheelchair access to the gardens can be arranged on request. Historic Environment Scotland publishes access details for Urquhart Castle on its site. Ask your cruise line about adapted coaches for tours.
If it rains
The Culloden visitor centre and museum are indoors, as are the Glenmorangie tours and the Invergordon Museum. Inverness has the most indoor options for shopping and cafés. The murals and the Duck Trail are short enough to do between showers.
