Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerMost ships dock at Hatston Pier, about 4 km from Kirkwall, and a free council shuttle takes around seven minutes to the Kirkwall Travel Centre, two minutes' walk from the shops. Smaller ships use Kirkwall Pier or anchor in the bay and tender into Kirkwall Harbour, right in town. Be back at the Travel Centre 90 minutes before all-aboard (120 minutes at the tender landing if you anchored); the last shuttle leaves town 60 minutes before the ship's departure.

Open my full Kirkwall day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Kirkwall? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeKirkwall is Orkney's main town, built around the red and yellow sandstone St Magnus Cathedral. The famous Neolithic sites, Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar and the Stones of Stenness, are 17 to 27 km away in the West Mainland, so the day splits into two choices: a relaxed town day on foot, or a trip out to the monuments. Orkney receives more than 100 cruise calls a year at Hatston, and on big-ship days the shuttle, the cathedral and the main sites fill quickly. Weather changes fast; bring a waterproof whatever the forecast.
Walkable? Partly · about 50 min (4 km)
From Hatston the walk into town takes 40 minutes to an hour on pavements for most of the route; follow the road and passenger signs. Most people take the free shuttle. If you land at Kirkwall Pier or by tender, everything in the centre is a short walk.

Run for Orkney Islands Council by Orkney Transport. Starts at 08:30, or later if your ship arrives after 08:30, and runs on a continuous rotation according to demand rather than a fixed timetable. The last bus leaves town 60 minutes before the ship's scheduled departure, or at 18:00 if the ship sails after 19:00. The Travel Centre is a two-minute walk from the main shopping area, and Meet and Greet staff there give directions and local bus information.

Check the current timetable on the council's bus page before relying on it for the return.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
If docked at Hatston, be at the Kirkwall Travel Centre 90 minutes before all-aboard (by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard). If your ship is at anchor, be at the tender landing in Kirkwall Harbour 120 minutes before all-aboard.
The shuttle runs to demand, so on big-ship days the queue at the Travel Centre builds in the last hour as everyone heads back at once. The last shuttle leaves town 60 minutes before the scheduled departure, which is later than you should aim for. If you go out to the West Mainland by bus, buses to Skara Brae are roughly hourly even in summer; leave Skara Brae at least two and a half hours before all-aboard so a missed or late bus does not strand you.
If you're running late
From town, take a taxi to Hatston Pier; it is about 4 km. From the West Mainland, take a taxi straight to the pier rather than waiting for the next bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Most calls dock at Hatston Pier. Some ships berth at Kirkwall Pier in the town centre, and others anchor in Kirkwall Bay and tender to Kirkwall Harbour, which lands you in the town centre close to the shops and restaurants. On tender days, allow extra time for the queue back to the ship.

Kirkwall itself needs no tour: the shuttle drops you two minutes from the cathedral, and the town centre is small and walkable. A ship tour earns its price for the West Mainland, because Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, the Stones of Stenness and the Italian Chapel are spread across 13 to 27 km of road and the buses that reach them run only about hourly. If you want to go independently, do Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar by summer X1 bus on a long call with a weekday timetable, or share a pre-booked local guide or taxi. On short calls or Sundays, the ship tour removes the return risk.
Assuming Skara Brae and the Ring of Brodgar are near the port.
Instead: They are 19–27 km away in the West Mainland. Book a tour, or check the summer X1 timetable before setting out.
Turning up at Skara Brae without a ticket on a big-ship day.
Instead: Book online in advance: it is cheaper (£14 instead of £16 in 2026) and guarantees entry.
Planning on the last shuttle.
Instead: The last bus leaves 60 minutes before departure. Join the queue 90 minutes before all-aboard instead.
Planning to see the Bishop's and Earl's Palaces outside summer.
Instead: They open only from 1 April to 30 September, with a lunch closure 12:30–13:00. Spend the time in the cathedral and the Orkney Museum instead.
Dressing for the forecast.
Instead: Orkney weather changes quickly and the Neolithic sites are exposed. Take a waterproof, a warm layer and shoes that cope with wet grass.
Kirkwall is a small, safe town. The main hazards are weather and roads: wind and rain can arrive quickly, the Neolithic sites are exposed with no shelter, and the paths at Brodgar and Skara Brae are grassy and slippery when wet. Country roads are narrow and many have no pavement, so do not walk along them between sites. On tender days, follow crew instructions at the landing, especially in a swell.
Emergency number: 999 (112 also works)
Crowds
Orkney receives more than 100 cruise calls a year, and on large-ship days the shuttle, the cathedral and the main sites get busy. Go to the cathedral first thing, before the coach tours return to town, and pre-book Skara Brae and the distillery. On big-ship days, avoid joining the shuttle queue in the last hour, when it is longest. Check the Orkney Harbours cruise arrivals list for your date to see how many ships are in.
Accessibility
The shuttle links Hatston Pier and the Kirkwall Travel Centre; ask the ship about step-free boarding. The town centre is compact but has slopes and some uneven stone paving. St Magnus Cathedral has an accessible toilet, but access to St Rognvald's Chapel is limited, and the Upper Levels tour is on narrow spiral stairs and unsuitable for anyone with limited mobility. The upper level of the Moosie Tower at the Bishop's Palace is closed. Outdoor sites such as the Ring of Brodgar are on grass paths. On tender days, ask the ship whether wheelchair users can transfer; this depends on the sea.
If it rains
Stay in town. Spend time in St Magnus Cathedral and the Orkney Museum, book a Highland Park distillery tour, and have a long lunch on Broad Street or Albert Street. The West Mainland sites are outdoors and exposed, so they are a poor choice in heavy rain.
