Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock at Garpaskjærkaien on Risøy island, about 950 m from the town centre, so there is no tender. Walk in over the bridge across Smedasundet in about 20 minutes, or take the cruise shuttle that runs on most call days to Vår Frelsers Church. Be back at the pier 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if you go out to Avaldsnes.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeHaugesund is a compact fishing and shipping town on the Karmsundet strait, between Stavanger and Bergen. The cruise pier sits on Risøy, a small island joined to the centre by a steep road bridge. The town itself takes a few hours: the Haraldsgata pedestrian street, the harbour along Smedasundet and the pink town hall. The Viking story is the reason most people come: Haraldshaugen, the national monument 2 km north, and Avaldsnes on Karmøy, the old royal seat. Fjord trips to Åkrafjorden and Langfoss are long and best done on a ship tour.
Walkable? Yes · about 20 min (0.95 km)
About 950 m from the pier to the centre over the bridge across Smedasundet. The bridge is steep and exposed to wind; the official guide suggests the shuttle or a taxi for wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility. The centre itself is compact, with some cobbled streets.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back at Garpaskjærkaien 60 minutes before all-aboard if you stay in town. From Avaldsnes, leave 90 minutes before all-aboard.
The walk from the centre to the pier takes about 20 minutes and the bridge climb is slower in wind and rain. Local buses to Avaldsnes are not timed for cruise calls, and the walk from the Avaldsnes bus stop to the history centre adds 20–30 minutes each way.
If you're running late
Taxis wait at the pier and serve the centre; ask a café or the tourist office on Haraldsgata to call Haugaland Taxi. If you will miss all-aboard, phone the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

Do the town, Haraldshaugen and the coastal path on your own: they are walkable or one short bus ride away. Avaldsnes is fine independently by taxi, or by bus on a long call if you check the return times first. Take the ship tour for Langfoss and Åkrafjorden: it is a half-day trip of about 1–1.5 hours each way by road, local buses do not fit, and the ship will wait for its own coaches.
Trying to pay in euros or dollars.
Instead: Prices and payment are in NOK only. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, and there are ATMs at the pier and in town.
Buying the bus ticket on board.
Instead: Use the Kolumbus Billett app; buying on the bus costs NOK 20 more per adult (2026).
Booking Langfoss independently and then trying to fit in the town.
Instead: Langfoss is a half-day trip. Pick one or the other, and use the ship tour for Langfoss.
Expecting a fjord view from town.
Instead: Haugesund faces the open coast and Karmsundet. The fjords are an hour or more inland.
Planning a shopping day on a Sunday.
Instead: Most shops close on Sundays; plan cafés, Haraldshaugen and the coastal path instead.
Haugesund is a calm, small town. The practical hazards are weather and terrain: the bridge from the pier is steep and windy, the coastal path is exposed, and the detour to Kvalen lighthouse can be dangerous in autumn and winter storms. Weather changes fast, so bring a windproof layer and shoes with grip, and check yr.no on the morning of your call.
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
Karmsund Havn can take one large ship or two smaller ones a day, so the town rarely feels overrun. Cafés fill around lunchtime when tour groups return; eat a little early. Hop-on hop-off and taxis are busiest just after the ship opens, so walk to Haraldshaugen first and take transport later.
Accessibility
The walk from the pier crosses a steep bridge, so wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility should take the cruise shuttle (to Vår Frelsers Church) or a taxi. Most public buildings, shops and cafés in the centre are wheelchair accessible, and most Kolumbus buses are wheelchair friendly with space for pushchairs. Some central streets are cobbled. The coastal path is gravel.
If it rains
Head for The Viking Planet digital museum and the cafés on Haraldsgata, or the floating saunas on Smedasundet. Haugesund Art Gallery is within walking distance of the centre. Skip the coastal path in heavy wind.
