Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips berth alongside at Greenock Ocean Terminal, so there is no tender. Greenock Central and Greenock West stations are each about a 15-minute walk away, and ScotRail trains reach Glasgow Central in about 40 minutes, usually three to four an hour. Board a train back from Glasgow Central at least 160 minutes before all-aboard.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeGreenock is the cruise port for Glasgow, on the south bank of the Firth of Clyde about 25 miles west of the city. The terminal was rebuilt with a £20 million visitor centre that opened in 2023, including the Wyllieum gallery, Scotts restaurant and a 200-metre floating pontoon berth. Most passengers take the train to Glasgow; a smaller number stay in Greenock, where the McLean Museum, Victoria Tower and the view from Lyle Hill fill a few hours. Loch Lomond is possible by public transport but needs two trains and a change in Glasgow.
Walkable? Yes · about 15 min
Greenock town centre is a short walk from the terminal. ScotRail puts Greenock Central at 10–15 minutes on foot, and Greenock West is about 15 minutes. Glasgow itself is not walkable: take the train.

Glasgow is easy on your own: the trains are frequent, the walk to the station is short, and the main museums are free. Loch Lomond by public transport is possible but needs two trains, a cross-city change and a long margin, so on a short call a ship or coach tour is the safer choice. Tours that combine Loch Lomond with Stirling Castle typically take 6–8 hours and are not practical independently in one port day.
Leaving Glasgow on a late-afternoon train.
Instead: Board by 160 minutes before all-aboard. Some services take 51 minutes, and you still have a 15-minute walk at the Greenock end.
Trying to do Loch Lomond and Glasgow in one day by train.
Instead: Pick one. Loch Lomond alone needs two trains and a change across Glasgow.
Planning Kelvingrove for 10:00 on a Friday or Sunday.
Instead: It opens at 11:00 on those days; do the bus tour first.
Assuming the McLean Museum is open every day.
Instead: It opens Wednesday to Saturday only.
Coming ashore without rain gear.
Instead: The west of Scotland weather changes quickly; carry a waterproof.
Greenock and Glasgow are generally safe for visitors. Use normal city sense in Glasgow, especially around the stations, and keep bags closed on busy trains. The bigger risk is the return: rail disruption can happen, so keep the 90-minute buffer and have the port agent number to hand. Lyle Hill paths can be rough and slippery after rain. Emergency number 999 (112 also works).
Emergency number: 999
Crowds
The terminal was built for about 150,000 passengers a year and passed that target in 2023, with 89 calls that season. If a train is full, wait for the next one; three to four run each hour. Do Kelvingrove early, before tour groups arrive.
Accessibility
The terminal is a modern building on the waterfront and the walk into Greenock town centre is short. ScotRail trains to Glasgow are frequent; book passenger assistance in advance if you need help boarding. Kelvingrove has lift access to all public areas, accessible toilets on every floor and a hearing loop. Lyle Hill is unsuitable for wheelchairs. Ask the McLean Museum about access on 01475 715624.
If it rains
Rain does not stop a Glasgow day: Kelvingrove is free and indoors. In Greenock, the Wyllieum at the terminal and the McLean Museum (Wednesday to Saturday) are the indoor options. Skip Lyle Hill and Loch Lomond in heavy rain or low cloud.
