Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerLarge cruise ships dock at the French Quay (Nabrzeże Francuskie) in Gdynia's working port, about 30 minutes on foot from Gdynia Główna station; smaller ships may use the Pomeranian Quay, about 10 minutes from the centre. Most passengers take a shuttle or taxi to the station, then the SKM commuter train to Gdańsk (30–40 min) or Sopot (about 15 min). Leave Gdańsk's Main Town at least 3 hours before all-aboard.

Where people get it wrong: Leaving Gdańsk too late and underestimating the transfer from Gdynia Główna back to the French Quay.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeGdynia is the cruise gateway to the Tricity: Gdynia itself, the resort town of Sopot and historic Gdańsk. Gdynia is a 1920s port city with modernist buildings, a long seafront and two museum ships, but most passengers head for Gdańsk's rebuilt Main Town. The berths are in an industrial area with few facilities, so the day starts with a shuttle, taxi or a long walk to the station. The SKM trains are frequent and simple, but the total return journey from Gdańsk is well over an hour, which is where people get caught out.
Walkable? Partly · about 30 min
From the French Quay it is about a 30-minute walk through the port to the centre and Gdynia Główna station; from the Pomeranian Quay it is about 10 minutes. Gdańsk and Sopot need the train or a taxi.

From Gdynia Główna, take any SKM train towards Gdańsk and get off at Gdańsk Główny, the closest stop to the centre. Trains run about every 10–15 minutes between 05:00 and 19:00, less often later. Buy SKM tickets from platform machines (English menu), the SKM ticket office or apps such as jakdojade or moBILET. Paper tickets must be stamped in the yellow validators before you travel. Buying from the conductor costs more.

The return from Gdańsk adds up: 15 minutes' walk to Gdańsk Główny, a wait, 30–40 minutes on the SKM, then a shuttle, taxi or 30-minute walk from Gdynia Główna to the French Quay. Last shuttles often leave well before all-aboard, so check the time.
If you're running late
If a train is cancelled or late, take a taxi or Bolt from Gdańsk or Sopot straight to the French Quay; tell the driver the quay name. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number in your daily programme straight away.

Gdańsk is easy to do alone by SKM, and the trains are frequent, so most confident travellers can skip the ship tour. Take the ship's Gdańsk tour if you have mobility problems, a short call or an early all-aboard, because the ship waits for its own coaches and the DIY return from the French Quay is long. Tours to Malbork Castle or the Westerplatte and Solidarity sites are worth booking through the ship, because the travel is longer and the timings are harder to control.
Leaving Gdańsk an hour before all-aboard.
Instead: Leave the Main Town 3 hours before. The walk, the train and the transfer from Gdynia Główna to the French Quay add up to well over an hour.
Boarding the SKM without stamping a paper ticket.
Instead: Validate paper tickets in the yellow machines before you travel. Inspectors fine unvalidated tickets.
Paying in euros in shops.
Instead: Pay by card in złoty or carry złoty. Shops that accept euros often use a poor rate.
Planning a museum day on a Monday.
Instead: The Crane, Dar Pomorza and the Emigration Museum are closed on Mondays. Walk the Main Town and Sopot instead.
Missing the last shuttle back to the French Quay.
Instead: Note the last shuttle time from your daily programme. If you miss it, a taxi from Gdynia Główna is quick.
The Tricity is generally safe for visitors. Watch your bags in the crowds on Długa Street and the Long Market, at Gdańsk Główny and on busy trains. The French Quay is a working port, so stay on marked routes and use the shuttle or a taxi rather than wandering through cargo areas. Take a company taxi or a booking app rather than unmarked cars.

Crowds
Gdańsk's Long Market and Długa Street are busiest from late morning, when coach tours from the ship arrive. Take an early train to beat them, go up St Mary's tower first, and leave the riverside for later. Mid-morning trains from Gdynia are quieter than the commuter peak.
Accessibility
The French Quay has no terminal building, and the walk to town is long, so wheelchair users should take the ship's shuttle or an accessible taxi. Gdańsk's Main Town is largely flat but has cobbles and kerbs. Tower climbs, including St Mary's, are stepped and unsuitable for wheelchairs. For a step-free day, the ship's coach tour to Gdańsk is the simplest option.
If it rains
Stay in Gdynia for the Emigration Museum and the Dar Pomorza, or go to Gdańsk for St Mary's Basilica, the Main Town Hall, the Crane and the European Solidarity Centre. Avoid Sopot, which is mostly outdoors. Note that most of these museums are closed on Mondays.
