Transport: Port of Cork – Cobh Cruise Terminal to Cobh town centre

Cobh is one of the easiest cruise calls in Europe: you step off the ship onto the town's waterfront, and the train to Cork leaves from a station across the road. The town itself fills a day on its own, with the Titanic and emigration stories, St Colman's Cathedral on the hill and Spike Island in the harbour. Cork city is 25 minutes away by train for the English Market, or a base for Blarney. A few ships use the Ringaskiddy deep-water berth across the harbour instead, which changes the day completely, so check your berth.

Walkable? Yes · about 3 min (0.2 km)

From the Cobh berth you walk straight into town. The waterfront and Casement Square are flat; St Colman's Cathedral is a steep climb by steps or a side road. Ships at Ringaskiddy are not walkable to anywhere useful.

Where your ship docks

  • Cobh Cruise Terminal (dedicated cruise berth) · 0.2 km to the centre — Takes ships up to 350 m. About three minutes' walk to the promenade. The railway station, in the red-brick Victorian station building opposite the terminal, houses a tourist information centre.
  • Ringaskiddy deep-water berth · 2.4 km to the centre — Used by the largest ships (up to 360 m). An industrial area about 1.5 miles across the water from Cobh, with no walking route to sights. Use your cruise line's transport or a taxi. The Port of Cork suggests taxi or bus to Passage West, the cross-river foot ferry, a 10-minute flat walk to Carrigaloe station, then the train.
  • Cork City – North Custom House Quay — Small ships only (up to 152 m). Berth in Cork city centre.

Train Cobh – Cork Kent

Check the day's timetable at the station. Kent Station is about a 7-minute walk from Cork city centre. Only Cobh and Cork stations are fully wheelchair accessible.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

In Cobh, be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From Cork, be at Kent Station for a train that reaches Cobh at least 90 minutes before all-aboard: for a 17:30 all-aboard, take the 15:00 train (150 minutes before), or the 15:30 only if extra cruise-day trains are confirmed. Leave Cork city centre 165 minutes before all-aboard.

With hourly trains, missing one costs an hour. From Blarney you depend on bus 215 and then the train, so leave Blarney at least four hours before all-aboard (240 minutes). On Spike Island, choose a return sailing that lands at Kennedy Pier at least 60 minutes before all-aboard.

If you're running late

If you miss the train in Cork, take a licensed taxi from the rank at Kent Station or in the city centre to the Cobh Cruise Terminal. Call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Skip the ship tour for Cobh and Cork city: the town is at the gangway and the train runs to Cork in 25 minutes. Spike Island is also easy to book yourself from Kennedy Pier. A ship tour is worth considering for Blarney, because the trip needs a train, a walk and a bus each way, or for Kinsale and anything else beyond the rail line. If your ship berths at Ringaskiddy, the ship's transport or a tour is usually the simplest option.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Cobh

Catching the last train from Cork that would get you back just before all-aboard.

Instead: Trains are usually hourly. For a 17:30 all-aboard take the 15:00 from Kent, so a delay or a full train does not leave you stranded.

Assuming the ship is at Cobh when it is at Ringaskiddy.

Instead: Check the berth. Ringaskiddy is across the harbour in an industrial area; use the ship's transport or a taxi.

Trying to fit Blarney and Cork city into a short call.

Instead: Blarney needs a train, a walk and a bus each way plus 3 hours on site. Choose one, or take the ship's tour.

Turning up at Kennedy Pier for Spike Island without a booking.

Instead: Book online and choose a sailing whose return lands at least an hour before all-aboard.

Hailing an unmarked car or a hackney as a taxi.

Instead: Only taxis with roof signs can be hailed or use ranks; hackneys must be pre-booked.

Safety: is Cobh safe for cruise passengers?

Cobh is a small, safe town. The main hazard is the steep climb to St Colman's Cathedral in wet weather. Cork city is safe for visitors with normal city care for bags and phones. Traffic drives on the left; look right first when crossing.

Emergency number: 112 or 999

Practical information

Crowds

The Port of Cork expected 93 ship calls and over 175,000 passengers in 2026. When two ships are in, the Titanic Experience and the morning trains fill first. Go to Cork early and see Cobh's sights in the afternoon, or the other way round, opposite to the crowd from your ship.

Accessibility

The Cobh berth, station and promenade are close together and flat. Cobh and Cork Kent are the only fully wheelchair-accessible stations on the line. Spike Island has wheelchair-accessible pontoons in Cobh and on the island, and 10 of its 12 exhibition spaces are accessible, though the 400 m walk to the fort includes a short steep slope. St Colman's Cathedral is up a steep hill; take a taxi. Blarney Castle itself is not accessible.

If it rains

Stay in Cobh for the Cobh Heritage Centre and the Titanic Experience, both beside the waterfront, then take the train to Cork for the covered English Market. Skip Spike Island and Blarney's gardens in heavy rain.
