Colón Cruise Port

Quick answerMost ships dock at the gated Colón 2000 terminal, with overflow at Cristóbal Pier a short taxi ride away; there is no tender. Do not walk into Colón city: take a registered taxi from the terminal dispatch or a tour to the Agua Clara Visitor Centre, 25–35 minutes away, where non-resident adults pay $10. Leave Agua Clara 105 minutes before all-aboard and be back on board 60 minutes before.

Transport: Colón 2000 Cruise Terminal (and Cristóbal Pier) to the Panama Canal's Atlantic locks (Agua Clara and Gatún)

Colón sits at the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal. The cruise terminal is a secure enclave of shops and cafés; the city outside it is poor and is not a place to wander. The reason to come ashore is the canal: the Agua Clara Visitor Centre overlooks the expanded locks and Gatún Lake, and its ticket includes the Gatún Locks viewing deck. Fort San Lorenzo and Portobelo, both part of a UNESCO World Heritage site that has been on the In Danger list since 2012, are realistic half-day trips. Panama City and Miraflores are 1–1.5 hours away by road, too far to do safely without a ship's tour.

Walkable? No

You can walk around inside the Colón 2000 complex, but not beyond it: cruise guides and the UK government warn of muggings in Colón city. Everything worth seeing needs a taxi or tour.

Where your ship docks

  • Colón 2000 Cruise Terminal — Main berth. A gated complex with a duty-free mall, craft shops, a bar-café, a supermarket, restaurants and a taxi and tour dispatch. Also a homeport for some Royal Caribbean sailings. Ride-hailing cars cannot enter the gates.
  • Cristóbal Pier — Industrial overflow pier with a small terminal shopping area. A short taxi ride to Colón 2000; check your daily programme for which berth you are at.

Registered tourist taxi from the terminal dispatch

Agree the fare, including waiting time, before you leave (2026)25–35 min to Agua Clara; about 45 min to Fort San Lorenzo; about 1 hour to Portobelo

Use the official dispatch stand at Colón 2000, not drivers who approach you outside. Fix the price for the whole round trip with waiting time, and pay at the end. Carry small US dollar notes.

Ship or independent tour

Varies; Princess lists Panama Canal Railway and New Locks from $199.95 adult (2026)Half or full day; about 6 hours for the railway tour

The only sensible way to see Panama City, Miraflores Locks, the Panama Canal Railway or Gatún Lake by boat. Canal lock timings and traffic can delay tours, and the ship waits for its own.

Local buses

Not recommended

Not practical for a cruise call and they start from Colón city, where walking is unsafe.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Agua Clara or the Gatún Locks deck 105 minutes before all-aboard, Fort San Lorenzo 135 minutes before, and Portobelo 165 minutes before.

Distances are short but roads around Colón are congested and the route to Fort San Lorenzo crosses the Atlantic Bridge. Traffic and rain cause delays. For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave Agua Clara by 15:45 and Portobelo by 14:45.

If you're running late

Ask staff at the Agua Clara Visitor Centre to call a taxi if your driver has not returned. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.

A one-day plan for Colón (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at Colón 2000 at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:30 Take a registered taxi from the Colón 2000 dispatch to Agua Clara. Agree a round-trip fare with waiting time.

  2. 09:00 Agua Clara Visitor Centre (open from 08:00): pay $10, watch the 12-minute film and the locks from the viewpoint.

  3. 10:15 Walk the 1 km country road for close views of ships in the locks, or the short ecological trail.

  4. 11:00 Use the centre's transport to the Gatún Locks viewing deck, included in your ticket, for the original 1914 locks.

  5. 12:30 Taxi back to Colón 2000.

  6. 13:15 Lunch at one of the terminal's restaurants, then browse the duty-free mall.

  7. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Panama Canal Railway and New LocksPrincess: from $199.95 adult (2026)Not practical independently on a port dayNone; take the tour

Agua Clara is the one canal visit worth doing on your own: it is close, has a fixed entry price, and you can watch ships in the locks without a tour. Take the ship's tour for the Panama Canal Railway, Miraflores Locks, Panama City, a Gatún Lake boat trip or an Emberá village visit. These involve long drives, train timings or boats, and only the ship's own tours are guaranteed a wait if they run late. Portobelo and Fort San Lorenzo are possible with a trusted taxi on a long call, but a tour removes the worry about getting back.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Colón

Walking out of the Colón 2000 gates into the city.

Instead: Stay inside the complex unless you are in a registered taxi or on a tour.

Trying to reach Panama City or Miraflores independently.

Instead: It is 1–1.5 hours each way on congested roads. Take the ship's tour, or visit Agua Clara instead.

Taking a taxi from a driver who approaches you outside.

Instead: Use the official dispatch stand and agree a round-trip price with waiting time.

Arriving at Agua Clara when no ships are moving.

Instead: Check the transit schedule on the canal's visitor website before you go.

Forgetting which berth your ship is at.

Instead: Check whether you are at Colón 2000 or Cristóbal and tell your driver.

Safety: is Colón safe for cruise passengers?

Panama is rated Level 2 (exercise increased caution) by the US government in August 2026, mainly for crime. The UK government warns of muggings in Colón city and notes that protests can be particularly large there. Stay inside the gated terminal unless you are in a registered taxi or on a tour, keep phones and jewellery out of sight, and do not resist a robbery. Taxis in Panama can be in poor condition; use the terminal dispatch. Avoid demonstrations.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Unofficial taxi drivers outside the terminal: use the registered dispatch stand inside Colón 2000.
  • Open-ended taxi fares: agree the full round-trip price, including waiting time, before you set off.

Practical information

Crowds

Panama expected 246 cruise calls in the October–April 2025–26 season, including homeport turnarounds at Colón 2000. Arrive at Agua Clara soon after it opens at 08:00 to get ahead of ship tour groups. Check the canal transit schedule, because a quiet lock is a bigger disappointment than a crowd.

Accessibility

The Colón 2000 complex is compact and mostly level. The Agua Clara centre has a viewpoint and theatre, but its trails include medium-difficulty sections. Fort San Lorenzo and Portobelo's forts have uneven ground and few railings. For wheelchair users, a ship's tour with an adapted vehicle is the most practical way to see the locks.

If it rains

Rain is common on the Caribbean coast. Agua Clara is still worthwhile: the film and indoor areas work in the rain and ships keep moving. Skip Fort San Lorenzo, where paths become slippery. Otherwise, stay in the terminal's shops and cafés.
