Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock alongside at the North or South Pier in downtown Kralendijk, so there is no tender and the waterfront is about 2 minutes' walk away. Beyond town you need a taxi, a rental vehicle, a water taxi or a tour. Be back at the pier 60 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Klein Bonaire or the south of the island 90 minutes before.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeBonaire is a small, dry island built around its reefs, and Kralendijk is a low-rise town on the sheltered west coast. The two cruise piers sit on the waterfront, so you are in town within minutes. The classic day is in the water: snorkelling from Klein Bonaire or from the shore, for which you need STINAPA's nature tag. On land, the south has salt pans, flamingos and slave huts; the north has 1000 Steps and Washington Slagbaai National Park. Taxis wait at the pier but are taken quickly on busy ship days, so arrange transport early.
Walkable? Yes · about 5 min (0.3 km)
Wilhelmina Park and the promenade are about 2 minutes from the pier; Fort Oranje and the Terramar Museum about 5 minutes; the rest of downtown 5–10 minutes. Te Amo Beach and 1000 Steps are not walkable.

Free2–10 min to anywhere in downtown Kralendijk
Flat walk along the waterfront. On ship days a market of island-made products is held on Wilhelmina Square by the piers.
Taxi
Fixed rates per destination, no meters; agree the fare before you get inAbout 10 min to the southern salt flats; about 25 min to the Washington Slagbaai entrance
Taxis wait at the port but are taken quickly on busy ship days. Rates are higher for the north of the island. Carry US dollars in cash, as not all taxis take cards. Agree a return pick-up time and keep the driver's number. The tourist board lists a taxi booking number: +599 717 8100.
Water taxi to Klein Bonaire
Fares vary by operator; check when bookingAbout 15 min crossing
Epic Watertaxi leaves from Bonaire Nautico Marina on the boulevard; Caribe Watersport leaves from Karel's Beach Bar in central Kralendijk. Boats land at No Name Beach. Departure times differ by operator, so ask for the last return boat when you book.
Rental car or pickup
Varies; book ahead—
Drive on the right; limits are 40 km/h in town and 60 km/h outside. Nearly all rental cars are manual. Most firms require renters to be 23 or over with a major credit card. Washington Slagbaai needs a pickup or jeep with high ground clearance. Watch for donkeys and goats on the road.

Be back at the pier 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Klein Bonaire, Lac Bay, the salt pans or 1000 Steps 90 minutes before all-aboard, and Washington Slagbaai 2 hours before.
Taxis are scarce on busy ship days, so the risk is finding a ride back rather than the distance. Book the return pick-up when you are dropped off. Water taxis run to their own timetables; take a boat well before the last one.
If you're running late
Phone the taxi number (+599 717 8100) or the driver who dropped you. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

| Item | Ship tour | On your own | Saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klein Bonaire snorkelling | Varies by line; check your cruise planner | Water taxi (fare varies by operator) plus the nature tag; bring or rent gear | Depends on the excursion price and whether it includes the nature tag |

Kralendijk itself needs no tour. A ship excursion is worth it for snorkelling or diving trips where the operator handles gear and the return time (check whether the nature tag is included), and for Washington Slagbaai, which needs a high-clearance vehicle, is closed on Mondays and stops admitting visitors at 14:30. On busy ship days, when taxis are taken quickly, a booked tour is also the simplest way to see the south of the island.
Expecting to find a taxi whenever you want one.
Instead: Taxis are taken quickly on busy ship days. Book ahead, agree the return time and keep the driver's number.
Going in the sea without the nature tag.
Instead: The tourist board says all users of Bonaire's waters must pay it, listed at US$40 (2026). Buy it through STINAPA's online payment site before you snorkel.
Heading to Klein Bonaire without water or food.
Instead: It is uninhabited with no facilities. Take water, lunch and sun protection, and check the last boat back.
Planning Washington Slagbaai on a Monday or late in the day.
Instead: It is closed on Mondays and nobody is admitted after 14:30. Go early in a high-clearance vehicle, or book a tour.
Renting a car and assuming it will be automatic.
Instead: Nearly all rental cars on Bonaire are manual; reserve an automatic early if you need one.
Take normal precautions: do not leave valuables in cars or on the beach while you snorkel. The main risks on a ship day are sun, dehydration and the sea, so carry water and know your limits on the reef. Drinking water is made from seawater and, according to the tourist board, meets World Health Organization standards. On the road, keep to the speed limits and watch for pedestrians, cyclists, donkeys and goats.

Crowds
Taxis go quickly when ships arrive, and water taxis and popular beaches fill as excursion groups head out. Book transport before you sail, get off early, and do Klein Bonaire or the south first, leaving the town for the last hour. Check the cruise schedule for your date to see how many ships are in.
Accessibility
The piers lead onto a flat waterfront, and the town centre is compact and close to the ships. Beyond town, most beaches involve rough ground, steps (1000 Steps) or boats (Klein Bonaire), and Washington Slagbaai is reached only on unpaved roads. If you need space for a mobility aid, book a suitable taxi in advance.
If it rains
If it rains, use the Terramar Museum if it is open, the shops on Kaya Grandi and the South Pier Mall, then go snorkelling once it clears.
