Castries Cruise Port

Quick answerShips dock at Pointe Seraphine, about a 20-minute walk round the harbour from central Castries, or at La Place Carenage, which is in the town centre. Beaches and Pigeon Island need a taxi; the government fare schedule lists US$20 to Rodney Bay and US$25 to Pigeon Island for 1–3 passengers. Leave Rodney Bay or Pigeon Island two hours before all-aboard, because the road back into Castries can be slow.

Transport: Port Castries (Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage) to central Castries

Castries is a working capital rather than a resort town, and the cruise berths sit inside its harbour. Central Castries is small: the market, Derek Walcott Square and the basilica are close together and easy on foot. The beaches people come for are north of town, at Vigie, Reduit (Rodney Bay) and Pigeon Island, and the Pitons and Soufrière are over an hour's drive south. On busy days up to five ships can call, so taxis, the market and the roads all fill at once. Decide early whether you are staying near town or heading north, and treat Soufrière as a ship-tour day.

Walkable? Partly · about 20 min (1.5 km)

Central Castries is walkable from either berth: about 20 minutes from Pointe Seraphine via the harbour footpath, and a few minutes from La Place Carenage. Vigie Beach is about 25 minutes' walk north of Pointe Seraphine. Everything else (Rodney Bay, Pigeon Island, Morne Fortune, Soufrière) needs a taxi or tour.

Where your ship docks

  • Pointe Seraphine · 1.5 km to the centre — The main cruise terminal, with two cruise berths and a duty-free shopping centre. A tourist information centre opens when ships are in. About 20 minutes' walk to the centre along the harbour footpath; water taxis also cross the harbour to La Place Carenage. Global Ports Holding, which has run the port since April 2024, is upgrading Berth 1 here, with full completion planned for 2027.
  • La Place Carenage · 0.2 km to the centre — A single cruise berth at the Queen Elizabeth II docks on the edge of downtown, with an air-conditioned duty-free mall. Castries Market is about three minutes' walk away.

On foot

FreeAbout 20 min from Pointe Seraphine; 3–5 min from La Place Carenage

From Pointe Seraphine follow the harbour footpath round to the town centre. It is hot at midday; carry water.

Water taxi across the harbour

Fare set locally; ask before boardingA few minutes

Water taxis run between Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage, which saves the walk round the harbour.

Taxi (fixed government fares)

US$8 within Castries/Vigie, US$20 to Rodney Bay, Morne Fortune or La Toc, US$25 to Pigeon Island or Marigot Bay, for 1–3 passengers (official schedule, 2023 revision)About 20 min to Reduit Beach/Rodney Bay in normal traffic

Licensed taxis queue outside both terminals. They are unmetered: confirm the fare, and whether it is in US or EC dollars, before setting off. The schedule charges more for four to six passengers. Drivers expect a tip of about 10%.

Local minibus

Cash fare paid to the driverNo fixed timetable

Minibuses have number plates starting with M. Buses heading north towards Gros Islet and Cap Estate leave from Jeremy Street near the market. They are cheap but crowded and run without a timetable, so they suit a long call and an early return.

Uber

App priceVaries

Uber is the only ride-share app operating in Saint Lucia. Availability at the cruise terminals on busy days is not guaranteed; the taxi rank is the reliable option.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Rodney Bay or Pigeon Island 2 hours before all-aboard, and Soufrière at least 3 hours before.

The road between Rodney Bay and Castries is the island's busiest, and journey times can double at peak times. On multi-ship days everyone heads back at once and the taxi ranks empty. Know which berth your ship is at: Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage are on opposite sides of the harbour.

If you're running late

In town, a licensed taxi to either berth costs US$8 for 1–3 passengers on the official schedule. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number in your daily programme straight away.

A one-day plan for Castries (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at Pointe Seraphine at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:30 Off the ship. Walk the harbour footpath into Castries (about 20 minutes), or take a water taxi across to La Place Carenage.

  2. 09:00 Castries Central Market while it is cooler: spices, cocoa, crafts and the food stalls.

  3. 09:45 Derek Walcott Square and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception next to it.

  4. 10:30 Licensed taxi from the La Place Carenage rank to Pigeon Island. Agree the fare first (US$25 for 1–3 passengers on the official schedule).

  5. 11:00 Pigeon Island: climb to Fort Rodney before the heat peaks, then the ruins and the interpretation centre.

  6. 13:00 Lunch at the park's restaurant, or a short taxi hop to Reduit Beach for Spinnaker's.

  7. 13:45 Swim at one of Pigeon Island's two beaches.

  8. 15:30 Taxi back to Pointe Seraphine, two hours before all-aboard.

  9. 16:10 Duty-free shops at Pointe Seraphine within sight of the ship.

  10. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Do Castries, Vigie Beach, Reduit and Pigeon Island on your own: the distances are short and taxi fares are set by the government. The ship's tour is worth it for Soufrière, the Pitons, Sulphur Springs and Diamond Falls. They are over an hour away on a winding road, and on a ship's tour the ship waits if the coach is late. If your call is short or several ships are in, the guaranteed return matters more than the price.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Castries

Not checking which berth the ship is at.

Instead: Pointe Seraphine and La Place Carenage face each other across the harbour. Note your berth before you leave and tell the taxi driver.

Getting in a taxi without settling the fare and the currency.

Instead: Confirm the price and whether it is US or EC dollars before you leave. The government schedule lists fares by number of passengers.

Leaving Rodney Bay late in the afternoon.

Instead: The road into Castries is busy and times can double. Leave 2 hours before all-aboard.

Trying Soufrière and the Pitons independently on a short call.

Instead: It is over an hour each way on a winding road. Take the ship's tour, or stay in the north.

Paying everything in US dollars cash.

Instead: US dollars are accepted, but change often comes back at a poor rate. The fixed rate is US$1 = EC$2.70; carry some EC dollars from an ATM.

Safety: is Castries safe for cruise passengers?

Castries is generally safe for cruise visitors in daytime, but the UK government reports serious crime on the island, including armed robbery and gang-related gun crime. Stick to main streets, avoid isolated areas and empty beaches, and do not carry large amounts of cash or jewellery. Use only licensed taxis. Currents can be strong and not all beaches have lifeguards or warning flags, so swim where others are and obey local warnings. The hurricane season runs from June to November and can bring flash floods and landslides.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Fare confusion: a price agreed in 'dollars' can turn out to mean US rather than EC dollars. Taxis are unmetered; confirm the amount and currency before you set off.
  • Unlicensed drivers offering rides at the terminals: use the licensed taxis at the official ranks.
  • Poor change in US dollars: vendors who accept US cash often give change at a bad rate. Pay in EC dollars where you can.

Practical information

Crowds

Up to five ships can call on one day in the October–April season. On those days taxis to Rodney Bay and Pigeon Island go quickly in the first hour and the ranks are thin when everyone returns. Go north early, visit the market before the tours arrive, and keep the duty-free shops for the last hour. Saturday is the busiest market day; on Sunday the market is closed and town is quiet.

Accessibility

Both berths are on the level harbour front, and the walk from La Place Carenage into the town centre is short and flat. The 20-minute harbour walk from Pointe Seraphine is long in the heat; the water taxi or a taxi is easier, but boarding a small boat may not suit wheelchair users. Pavements in central Castries are uneven and the market is crowded. Morne Fortune and Fort Rodney on Pigeon Island involve steep climbs. Ask your cruise line about accessible excursions and adapted vehicles before the call.

If it rains

Showers are common, especially from September to November, and usually pass quickly. Stay in town: the covered market, the basilica and the air-conditioned La Place Carenage mall work in the rain. Avoid the Soufrière road after heavy rain, which can bring flash floods and landslides.
