Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock at the Sociedad Portuaria cruise terminal on Manga Island, about 3.2 km from the historic centre, inside a working cargo port. A shuttle takes you from the ship to the terminal, then a taxi reaches the Clock Tower in about 10–15 minutes; taxis are unmetered, so agree the price before you get in. Leave the walled city two hours before all-aboard, because afternoon traffic can add 30 minutes or more.

Open my full Cartagena de Indias day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Cartagena de Indias? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeCartagena's cruise terminal sits in the container port on Manga, so the day starts with a short shuttle ride past stacked containers to a shaded garden with birds and a coffee shop. From there it is a short taxi ride to the walled city, the colonial centre ringed by about 11 km of stone walls, with Getsemaní just outside the Clock Tower gate and the Castillo San Felipe on its hill about 1 km away. Heat is the main factor in planning: do the fort early, keep the walled city's shaded streets and museums for midday, and allow plenty of margin for the drive back.
Walkable? No (3.2 km)
The route out of the port runs through industrial traffic with little shade and poor pavements, and the heat is fierce. Take a taxi to the walled city. Once inside the walls, everything is easily walkable.
Where your ship docks
Port shuttle (ship to terminal)
FreeAbout 2 min
A shuttle bus or open-air trolley carries passengers from the berth to the terminal building and Port Oasis. Do not walk around the container yard.
Taxi from the terminal
Reported at about US$8–20 per car one way (2026); the city's tariff table lists Manga–Centro at COP$9,800 (2024 decree)10–15 min to the Clock Tower; 8–10 min to Castillo San Felipe
Taxis queue at the terminal exit and drivers can be pushy. They do not use meters: agree the total price, in pesos or dollars, before getting in, and confirm whether it is per car. Carry small peso notes.
Ride-hailing app (Uber, Didi and similar)
About US$4–6 to the old town (2026)10–15 min plus waiting
Drivers cannot enter the port. Follow the exit signs out of the terminal driveway and wait on the main road. UK travel advice recommends app or phone-booked taxis over hailing in the street. Coming back, you are dropped at the port entrance and walk in.
Hourly driver
About US$12–15 per hour (2026)As booked
Useful for La Popa or combining the fort and walled city. Agree the hours, stops and total fare at the start.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Leave the walled city or Getsemaní by taxi two hours before all-aboard (15:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard), aiming to be at the port gate 90 minutes before.
The ride is short on paper but afternoon traffic across to Manga can add 30 minutes or more, and the shuttle from the terminal back to the ship and security take extra time. From Castillo San Felipe, allow the same margin.
If you're running late
If the street taxis are slow, book an app ride or ask a restaurant to call a taxi. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away; the SPRC office line is +57 605 660 7781.

The walled city, Getsemaní and Castillo San Felipe are easy to do on your own with a taxi; agreeing the fare in advance is the only real effort. A ship tour is worth it for the Rosario Islands or Playa Blanca, because the boat trip is long, small tourist boats off this coast have a poor safety record (the US travel advisory warns about them), and seas can be rough in December and January. If you book an island trip independently, check life jackets and keep a large time margin.
Getting into a taxi without agreeing the price.
Instead: Taxis are unmetered. Agree the total, the currency and whether it is per car before you sit down.
Trying to walk from the ship to town.
Instead: The route is through a cargo port and busy industrial roads. Use the shuttle, then a taxi or app ride.
Leaving the walled city 45 minutes before all-aboard because the ride is only 15 minutes.
Instead: Afternoon traffic can add 30 minutes or more. Leave two hours before all-aboard.
Doing Castillo San Felipe at midday.
Instead: Go straight there in the morning, before the heat builds.
Accepting a 'free' sample, bracelet or massage on the beach or in the plazas.
Instead: Say no firmly and keep walking. Payment is demanded afterwards.
The walled city and Getsemaní are busy and well policed by day, and the main nuisance is persistent vendors. Colombia as a whole carries a US 'reconsider travel' advisory (Level 3, March 2026), but its do-not-travel areas are elsewhere. Standard precautions apply: do not display phones, watches or jewellery, use ATMs inside banks or shopping centres, and do not leave drinks unattended or accept them from strangers, because drugging with scopolamine is a documented risk. Both UK and US advice say to use app-booked or phone-booked taxis rather than hailing in the street. Small tourist boats to the islands have had fatal accidents; check life jackets before boarding.

Emergency number: 123
Crowds
The terminal can handle up to five ships a day, and on busy days tour groups reach the Clock Tower and Plaza de Santo Domingo from mid-morning. Go to Castillo San Felipe first while groups do the walled city, then reverse.
Accessibility
The shuttle from ship to terminal avoids the walk across the container yard, and parking for guests with accessibility needs is available at the terminal. The walled city is flat but its pavements are narrow and uneven. Castillo San Felipe is a hilltop fort with slopes, steps and passages and is difficult for wheelchair users. A taxi can drop you close to the Clock Tower and the main plazas. Heat is a real issue for anyone with limited mobility; plan indoor stops.
If it rains
On a wet day, use the Museo del Oro Zenú, the Santuario San Pedro Claver and the cafés and shops of the walled city and Las Bóvedas. Paths at the fort can be slippery when wet. Tropical storms are possible along this coast from June to November; follow the ship's instructions.
